Why Does Marji Lose Her Own Identity

Through Marji’s preservation of her own identity, she is able to believe in herself regardless the environment she stays in and the influence by others. To begin, Marji’s development of her own identity leads her into believing in herself. She is from Iran, it is where the people needs to wear the hijab outside or even inside of the house. Although she is an Iranian, she does not wear the hijab when she is at home. From page 84 (it is a picture of Marji does not wear hijab at home). It can show that Marji is believing in her own identity, though she is an Iranian when every woman wears the hijab in the home. Marji is not influenced by others people around her. She does not wear it at home. She preserves her own identity by believing herself, she felt not wearing the hijab is the most comfortable way when she stays at home. During that time, the Iranians are very traditional. They don’t want to see someone does not wear the black traditional coat on the street. But Marji is not influenced by the people who around her. She wears the fashion jacket with stylish Michael Jackson button and walks on the street. It causes she was rebuked by a woman who has a tradition mind. “What do I see here? Michael Jackson! That symbol of decadence?’’(page 33). It can represent that when Marji does not wear the traditional black coat on the street, she was being discriminated.
