Why Education is Failing in America
“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.”
-Martin Luther King Jr.
What defines an extraordinary country? Some might say it depends on the safety of the citizens. Thailand has a crime index of 37.06, according to Numbeo - a website that lists both the crime index and safety index of all the countries in the world. That is a low statistic compared to the United States crime index: 50.01. On the other hand, 80% of Thailand’s population lives in poverty. Safety does not define a country. When America won its independence in 1776, it did not immediately become the world power it is today; it took centuries of improvement internally. An education system should provide knowledge valuable for the citizens and should be built around the students. The definition of education is the act of acquiring knowledge that prepares one intellectually for mature life. However, education in the 21st century has strayed from the literal definition. The education system in America does not provide enough opportunities student to succeed due to the lack of encouragement and dedication from the teachers, the poor study habits students have developed over time, and the immense stress placed on grades rather than knowledge.
As stated in “The History Of
The purpose of education is to prepare students for their futures with both knowledge as well as fundamental life skills. I believe students are highly capable beings who have a desire to be productively challenged. To empower students to meet and exceed high expectations set forth by the state, school, or teacher, it is imperative that educators “teach for enduring understanding through partnerships and by drawing on brain-based education, students ' multiple intelligences, and culturally appropriate curriculum innovations” (Laster and Johnson). Beyond guaranteeing students can read, write, and perform basic math functions, we should be producing graduates who are responsible individuals positively contributing to society, reliable workers, and devoted family members. Whether students receive a scholarship to attend college or go to work immediately following graduation, we must train them to conduct themselves with integrity, have an admirable work ethic, and solve challenging problems they may face throughout their lives.
Education can be considered the process of discovering something new that a person did not previously know. It is an essential part of life because it empowers people with knowledge, enables them to contribute to society, earn money, and become independent. Education is a process that starts when you are born.
In Martin Luther King Jr’s quote, he exposes that education teaches a person to think intensively and to think critically. One of the author’s main ideas is to tell people that education is able to make people intensively to what they do, because this is a way to make you success in college. On the another side, education is to teach one to think critically is mean that people have to learn what they mistake on, so they are able to change their mistake and become a better person. Education helps people to get the job they want, to desire and achieve their goal and make their own personal character. The real education goal is to encourage people to learn, and to use the knowledge in order to become an intelligence person, and to build their
The American education system is failing the generations of the future. Society neglects the children born into impoverished areas, while mainly white upper class children participate in superior educational activities. Low-income neighborhoods often produce schools with low scoring students. Therefore the government transitions these schools into impersonal factories. The phrase diversity masquerades the reality of re-segregation of schools. Many schools across the country are utilizing the phrase diversity, yet the statistics reveal that over ninety percent of the students are black or Hispanic. Creating successful environments is extremely difficult and subsequently results in serious consequences for the American education system.
The majority of educated people of the continental United States have gone through the public school system at some point or another. Many have gotten their entire education through this medium. So, if so many of our populace is educated by public schools we would expect that everyone within this institution would get a first rate schooling, right? That we would be giving our children the best education that money can buy? Of course, knowing our government, that dream will stay just that: a dream. The American education system is broken and outdated and we need a complete overhaul if we want our future generations to get the education that they deserve.
In all forms, education should simply be the art of the utilization of knowledge and the vehicle to impart a sense of the power of ideas to a future generation.
America’s education system is a disaster and the government has over the years spent millions on fixing the education system. The government has failed in fixing the education system because they are not the real people who can fix it. The government has made many different programs to fix the education system, like the No Child left behind program. Most people blame the government for spending millions to fix the education system and failing. What our society does not understand is that the government can only fix so much. It is time for all students, parents, and teachers to take responsibly and fix the education system in the way they want. Students, parents and teachers can make the education system better by students taking control of their own education, parents who care for their kid’s education and teachers who make amazing learning environment for their students.
Waiting for Superman both disgusted me and inspired me. It disgusted me to see our education system in such disarray while no one seems willing to make or allow any changes to occur, yet I was inspired to do my best to be a light in a failing system. From this movie and the readings I have done in this class, I realized that America is never going to have an education system that everyone agrees with, so the only thing we can do as a teacher is to ensure we are preparing young minds for the future as best as we possibly can.
There are many reasons as to why the U.S. education system is failing. First, the U.S. education system is failing because the parents’ involvement in their children is not enough. There is simply not enough time for teachers to instruct every student and what they need to know. Because of this, there must be parent involvement outside of school. Students who are at a socio-economic disadvantage tend to struggle more in school, especially parents lacking higher education levels. Students who come from middle and upper class families have the same risk because of the demands of careers and an over-dependence on schools. Another reason why the U.S. education system is failing is overcrowded schools and classes. If a class is smaller, a student
While reading the piece, “Straight from the source: What works for fist-generation college students” I was somewhat conflicted. I applaud the state of Texas for taking steps in order to increase enrollment of first-generation students in higher education institutions, However, I feel like these steps aren’t addressing the bigger issue; that being the broken education system in America. Until this bigger issue is addressed and the problem is dealt with from the root, anything that is done will only be addressing the symptoms caused by the real problem which is America’s broken education system.
What is it that’s making our country suffer from excelling in education? Very few would argue about the importance of our education system today. Issues such as lazy teachers, lack of parent involvement, and teaching useless information in class may hinder progress in today’s education system. An education plays a crucial role and is an essential tool, unfortunately, with all the jaded judgments; our students are not able to value their education. A proper education can open the doors to many opportunities that would have never been possible if it had not been for the knowledge and preparation that one received while in school. With the growing economy and desperate times, it is more important than ever for our country’s children to receive the proper education and training that is needed to allow them to acquire a good job and produce the revenue needed to live. Today's education system is flawed in many ways, and these flaws should be eliminated to ensure a good education for our future generation.
The supposed purpose of education to prepare you for college, and give you the basic skills and citizen knowledge you will need to live independently as an adult. I am so glad I remember all the cellular processes supplying molecules needed to regulate metabolism because you know; that will prepare me for life, right? But I am just a little interested in how to pay taxes, how to change my tire, how to manage insurance, because these are the things we need to know as a functioning member of society. We need to learn these things somehow and school proclaims that it has succeeded in teaching us life skills, when, in fact, we still do not understand
To what extent do schools serve the goals of a true education? In order, to correctly identify the answer to this prompt, one must first define true education. ?James Baldwin describing true education said, the purpose of a true education is to help develop well-rounded individuals, consequently, integrating them as educated and intellectual members of society, individuals who are able to make their own decisions and worldly perceptions. Intelligence and character becoming the rudiments of success. Although the school system is said to be failing, it?s purpose transcends the common complaint, in its ability to touch all students, giving everyone an opportunity
education system is the lack of representation and attention to the multiple intelligences: logical-mathematical, visual, musical, verbal, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalistic. Traditional methods of teaching primarily cater to the logical and mathematical aspect of learning, while the other seven are completely ignored. This results in an atmosphere that more closely resembles an assembly line rather than a classroom where students are given necessary material in a lecture fashion, tested on their ability to memorize and repeat the information, and no emphasis in placed on creative learning or application outside of the classroom. Given the nature of schooling its actually understandable why America’s public schooling is seen as inferior to other developed countries, there is simply little desire to learn amongst the students due to the seemingly lack of importance and attention to the individual student. This problem can be addressed by placing more consideration into the needs, skills, and desires of each and every student, not by treating them as a single unit that functions on the same mentality. But such attention to detail could prove to be very time consuming, strenuous, and costly, so what must change in order for positive results to be seen? The mentality that lecture-based teaching styles are the only way to educate must be corrected and there needs to be an inclusion of other
