Throughout this course, I have learned that grammar acquisition is best acquired through reading and writing. While reading the Weaver and Shaughnessy books, I have learned the main concepts and philosophies of this method of teaching. However, I feel that it is through our class discussions of the chapters that I am starting to really comprehend and understand the information that I am reading. Hearing real-life examples from Dr. Murphy and my classmates has allowed me to begin to understand and retain the information so that when I have my own classroom, I will know how to implement these concepts myself. That is my goal with this objective, that I will grasp the concepts will enough to be a teacher that excels at teaching grammar through writing and reading.
Course Objective: Students will practice grammar skills and the teaching of grammar. Although I love reading and writing, I am not a scholar of grammar and have often found myself apprehensive that I do not have the proper knowledge needed to teach grammar. However, the Weaver text has reintroduced me to grammar terms such as appositives and participials, absolutes and adjectivals. It has been helpful to refresh my memory on these terms and to grasp an even better comprehension during class as I learn how to incorporate the teaching of these skills (and others) through writing. My learning goal with this objective is to continue to grasp the different ways to teach grammar so that when I am a teacher, I will be able
Ron Padgett, the author of Creative Reading, recalls how he learned to read and write as though these things happened yesterday. Like Padgett, I tried recalling my reading and writing history.

a. Are there any unusual uses of verbs that could surprise or confuse students? To help children grow, which aspects of grammar might the teacher need to support? Explain your thinking for both questions.
As we look at principle three it instruct needs to ensure that learners also focus on form. Professor Ellis explains that the teacher can achieve this by focusing on inductive and deductive grammar lessons. It allows and make ELL students aware of explicit grammatical rule, it gives the learner specific practice on grammatical structure, and it gives them the opportunity to get corrective feedback. (Ellis, R, 2008)
I will start with a journey through a hellacious class focused around grammar. Coming into the WCSCC as a 12th grader, I was astonished at how little skill I had when it came to grammar. It still boggles my mind that it took twelve years of school before I met a teacher who really, really cared about how I composed my sentences. She wanted us to know what adjectives, prepositions, nouns, pronouns, and run on sentences were. However, she knew we didn’t. On the first day of class, she made the
Another essential key element to improving my writing skills is by learning to “proofread and check for grammar”.
Using personal reflection to consider my knowledge practices in grammar was useful in helping me understand how they were applied during my time at school. Uzuner & Mehta (2007) states that reflecting on personal experience can be if students relate it to formal content. Thinking back about how grammar was taught in my days I realised that it is now taught using different methods. I always knew that grammar was a weakness when it came to be taught in Australian Schools. Ever since ACARA took control of the Australian Curriculum, I believe now grammar is taught systematically and explicitly to students (Brennan, 2011, p.7). Engaging in week 8 post, showed that many of the students agree that grammar lessons in Australian should be increased
Assignment(s): Purchase your textbooks. You can use a comparable grammar handbook. Also, the handbook is on reserve at the library under its title. Grammar assessment. The paragraph should be brief, no more than five sentences. See Blackboard Announcements section for more details.
School has always been a place of business, in my opinion. A place where we are educated and prepared for life, essentially. And the proper way of doing so, as I believe most people have been taught, is to enhance all skills such as vocabulary, grammar, mathematics, etc... This is why we are taught so many subjects, being tested and guided to follow whichever path we feel most comfortable or skilled at doing. During the process, is where skills are established and developed. The product that is intended after having gone through school is to shape a well skilled, educated, and productive person that can benefit society as a whole. In limiting the teaching of Standard American English, we would be limiting the amount of people that can fulfill their potential, raise the difficulty for teachers, and accept mediocrity. In keeping this dialect, students will gain new skills and learn the language of business to prepare them for any encounters along the way. There is no need, in my eyes, to minimize or put an extent to teaching the English dialect and that is what I will personally support in this essay.
Even though my grammar has improved during the progression of this class, I still have a lot to learn before my knowledge of grammar can contribute to my writing. I have never had an aptitude for
It is not uncommon to say that grammar instruction plays an important role in language teaching. Regarding the status and importance of grammar teaching, a variety of opinions have been made. Batstone (1994) states that “language without grammar would be chaotic: countless words without the indispensable guidelines for how they can be ordered and modified” (p. 4). More vividly, Wang (2010) makes two similes. She compares grammar to the frame of a house, which is a decisive factor to ensure the solidness of it. Additionally, she regards grammar as a walking stick, whose function is to help and support students to learn English. Thus, the nature of grammar instruction manifests its own significance as it helps students
English is an international language which is used officially all around the world. Anybody who wants to make connections with the world we live in should learn English. I had English language classes in my secondary and high school years. I also took some private English learning courses throughout summers in my country, Turkey. However, I could not improve my English effectively as all Turkish students in Turkey. I fully agree that English will be learned most efficiently in the boundaries of an English-speaking country not in the home country because of some cases. Therefore, I came here, USA, to learn English better after graduation from my university.
Larsen-Freeman (2001) as cited in Mart (2013), describes grammar as a system of meaningful structures and patterns that are governed by particular pragmatic constraints. This clearly indicates that grammar plays a crucial role in learning the target language. Grammar instruction is one of the most difficult issues that people have encountered in language learning and teaching. Therefore, the best way to overcome this issue is by
Grammar has always been an important issue in second and foreign language learning and teaching. Some hold the view that grammar is not essential for second/foreign language learning and therefore have a ‘zero position’ regarding grammar teaching. On the other hand, some view that grammar is necessary for second/foreign language learning.
There are various ways to describe the grammar of a language. It has been observed that over the last decades , teachers all over the world use either the traditional way of teaching grammar or the innovative based on the CLT approach in the classroom. Typically, grammar is seen as a set of discrete rules to produce grammatically correct sentences. This is called by linguistics formal grammar in contrary to the functional one, in which the primary concern is with the communication. As far as my teaching practice is concerned, I used to teach intermediate level
