Oral exam English 1. Banning guns Owning a gun is legal in the USA. Actually, it’s the second amendment. The USA has the highest civilian gun ownership rate in the world. US civilians own about 270 million guns, compared to about 3 million guns owned by the military and less than 1 million guns owned by the police, also in the USA. A tazer would cause temporary pain, but would not kill anyone if it was turned onto a 'good guy'. Because of this major reason, guns should be banned for private use, and the alternatives put into effect immediately. 3. To create the ideal situation; what should happen? A lot has to happen to create the ideal situation. The American government should toughen the gun laws first of all. This may not prevent all shootings and murders from happening, but it would make it harder to obtain a gun or keep one (or more). They should ban assault weapons at least, or try to ban all kinds of guns for civilians. Assault weapons were not meant for self-defense or hunting, so I don’t even understand why it is legal to keep one. Assault weapons should only be used in a war. Gun holders should first pass through a registration process and sellers should do a background check (because right now about 40% of gun sales are conducted without). This fact is shocking, while it is obligatory for sellers to do this check. People should also stop funding the NRA, because this organization cannot exist without funding. Congress needs to stop their reflexive obeisance to the NRA.
