Why High School Runaways

When I was in middle school I had classes with the smartest kids in my grade. We each had plans for our future and we could not imagine anything getting between our goals and accomplishing them. We were wrong.

Once high school began, several obstacle appeared in our paths. In middle school we had various programs to do and anyone could participate. On the other hand, in high school, in order to be in a club you needed a certain grade point average. Most of the kids at risk of ruining their lives had low grades meaning that they could not join any of the clubs.

Shown in figure 1, the higher percentage of Juvenile arrests were runaways. There are many reasons why juvenile runaway, for example; Arguments with family, feeling not being understood, feel distant to their families, doing bad in school , and don’t have anyone to lean on.

Most of the juveniles that are doing bad in school are Hispanic. Since they barely know the language they tend to fall apart in school. They don’t join any activities because they won’t be active in them as a result they lean on the street for support. They become friends with gang members and following their steps. Shown in figure 2, the delinquency of hispanic juvenile has doubled between the years 2011-2015.

For example, In Chicago, they started a “Midnight Basketball League” to prevent crimes. They started including fundings for crime prevention program. Stated in an article, “Midnight basketball is intended to lure young men off the streets during the peak crime hours of 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. It requires them to attend workshops on everything from job training to sexually transmitted diseases as a condition of playing. Some of the programs require the players to pursue a high school diploma.”(Midnight Basketball). As a result, crime has dropped down immensely around the area after the program
