As teens become better at thinking abstractly, their social anxiety increases. I choose this topic because I wanted to learn about how sleep actually affects the brain. You will be learning about how it helps the brain. Why the school time should be held back an hour. Also what the consequences are for not getting that sleep you need every night. Sleep helps the brain in many ways. Getting the right amount of sleep will help improve your memory by “Practicing the skills you want to learn in your sleep”. It improves your energy so you can perform your task with ease. It also reduces inflammation that links to heart disease, strokes, diabetes, arthritis and high blood sugar. As well as getting to bed helps with you being creative. So if you get a good night's sleep you will be able to think of pictures that you dreamed of and the brain recognizes those images and lets you recreate them. Schools should start school later because based on some science experiments, teenagers have this thing called the secretion of the sleep hormone melatonin. Which starts around 10:45pm and ends around 8:00am, so what that means is the teenagers will not fall asleep until it starts and will not awaken until melatonin stops. Another good example is, if the student has a test that next morning and they stay up late studying, the student develops stress which then throws off their sleep schedule. After reading both passages, I believe that both authors agreed to the idea of starting high schools later. In the passages "High Schools Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens "and "High School Will Keep Starting Too Early both implied the fact that teens need a lot of rest. Here's why, they both stated facts on how they believed schools should consider starting earlier. As the first author decided to use facts about why high schoolers should enter later, the second author stated the reasons why high schools could not be delayed. High school students should have a later starting time in school due to students not getting the amount of sleep they need to function. Students that stay up late at night are way too tired to learn when they get to school early in the morning. Most students who do stay up late are unable to sleep due to melatonin not yet being produced. This shows that starting school at a later time would have many positive benefits. These benefits include higher test scores, increased attendance, more participation from students, and higher performance from athletes.

Everyone has always hated getting up super early in the morning to go to school. As children get older they move to different schools, from elementary to middle to high school, and the start times get earlier and earlier. In elementary school it was never a problem getting up but as we get older, it becomes more difficult to get up. I agree with the decision to change school times and what it has to offer. This would not only help the teenagers with many things but also accommodate the parents schedules too. An alarm’s sole purpose in life is to shatter the hopes and dreams of students worldwide every morning. If we were to start school later, academic GPA’s (grade point averages) would definately increase. Isn’t this what we want in our school? It is proven that the more sleep you get, the more awake and alert you actually are. I interviewed Michael Claffey, a sophomore at Newington High School, he stated “ Goooooud.” Also Jorge Premto a sophomore at Newington High School stated “Yes Michael, yes I do believe school should start at nine o’clock am. This will thus help further my education because I will be well rested.” In all, we need school to start later because it will help us with our education.
Nevertheless Some Students, and Teachers have a hard time getting up for school around 6, waking up that early, sometimes causes attitudes, dozing off in class, and unhealthy students, and teachers, school should start at 9 this would be better for everyone.
