High School Dropouts Dropout is a broad term used to classify a person who has abandoned their class or field of study. A great number of the teens that drop out of school are thought of as being in the same category, but there are countless different reasons why students drop out of high school. Be it living in low poverty areas and having to quit school to work and help the family out. Struggling with learning disabilities and being in special education or even rebelliousness and pregnancy. Among the abounding states in our country, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana have the highest high school dropout rates.

Teen birth rates were high in the same states with the poverty and special needs issues. With Louisiana teen birth rate at 47.5 births per 100, ages 15-19(Wright). This means almost 50% of the children born during this time frame were born to underage mothers entering high school or just graduating. Typically, when a teen gets pregnant in high school they drop out. This is either due to having to get a job and support her now new family or even the embarrassment of her situation. In the south, particularly many teens are made to marry at young ages due to pregnancy and forced to grow up. This situation is avoidable if parents would push their children to finish their high school education and recognize how important receiving their diploma is.
I am hopeful as we enter a new time that the dropout rates in these southern states will become less and less. That we can break the cycle on families having to depend of the government for different programs to survive, so that we can begin to pour money into the school system to help the teens with learning disabilities make it through school. I am hopeful that in these new times teens are not forced to marry and stop pursing their education. In fact, US News reports that “30% of college freshmen drop out after their first year of college” (Bowler 2). There are quite a few reasons students drop out of College. High school dropout rate is a significant indicator of future success in life. For high school dropouts, it is harder to find jobs and earn as much money as their graduated peers. On the outside looking in, not being able to graduate is usually associated with school performance, socioeconomic status, parents’ education level and/or lack of motivation. The author states that, a “Divers youth, ages 16-25, who had failed to complete high school.” The author discovered that approximately “About one-third of all high school students in the United Sates fail to graduate” (91). Based on this article, the dropout rates vary among the races. The dropout rate among Black and Hispanic are fifty percent. She describes that the reasons for students dropping out from high school are including, “Students were bored, missed too many days, spent time with people who weren’t interested in school, had too much freedom, and not supervision.”

High school dropouts are known to face issues in their future in regards to their socioeconomic status, job attainment, and other risk factors that may influence their lives in the long-term. It has been found that high school dropouts earn an estimated $9,000 less per year on average compared to individuals that graduate. They are also more likely to live in poverty, it was also found that dropouts are three times more likely to be unemployed compared to graduates which puts them at a further disadvantage (Burrus & Roberts, 2012). The consequences of dropping out not only affects the individuals but also our society, due to its contributions to governmental costs; in 2001 there were 40% of high school dropouts (16-24 years old) receiving government assistance (Burrus & Roberts, 2012).. This portrays how high school dropouts leads to further problems and affect others.
The issue of high school dropouts is a serious concern for educators, policymakers, and the public. High school dropouts experience numerous adverse consequences in response to an incomplete education. For instance, high school dropouts are more likely to lack the skills necessary for successful employment and further education, to be unemployed, to be welfare recipients, and when employed, to make less money, lack health insurance, suffer health problems, and to be involved in crime on average than their peers who did complete (Belfield & Levin, 2007; Rumberger, 2011; Swanson & Editorial Projects in Education, 2009). High school dropouts are also more likely to suffer from depression or other mental health issues (Rumberger, 2011; Swanson & Editorial Projects in Education, 2009). Additionally, dropouts present numerous challenges at a societal level, including a serious socioeconomic problem, given that most are undereducated and ill-equipped to meet the rapidly advancing technological needs of society’s workforce. (Zablocki, & Krezmien, 2012).
Teen pregnancy is a very controversial social issue and the vast majority of Americans consider the outrageous rate of teen pregnancies a severe issue, certainly a problematic occurrence that is believed to be a moral decline in our country. Teenagers are physiologically capable of reproducing but not emotionally or financially prepared to be parents at such a tender age. Through various research studies a plethora of determinants has pin pointed teens unprecedented pregnancies. One cause of this problem is the apparent indication of social separation or disadvantage. Within this issue you would find poverty, single parent households, educational disadvantages on the parents behalf, a lack family/parental support, and unemployment. A child’s educational performance, inappropriate sexual acts, and inferior apprehensions about their futures play a vital role in teen pregnancies as well. Amongst the listed disadvantages the three that take precedent are lacks of family communication, sexual abuse, and poverty. Furthermore, teen mothers do not fit the ideal ideology of the normative scheduling of motherhood, therefore, ultimately resulting in negative consequences for them and society. What needs to be understood is, as to why the numbers of teens are becoming parents at such a vernal age.
