As I was walking down the street, on my way to work, I was stopped by a young journalist, no older than 25 years old. He appeared to have been working for several days without rest. He had bags under his eyes, stains on his shirt that appeared to be at least two days old, and an unmistakable passion of someone who is trying to move up in the world. He asked me “what did you have to do to create a life for yourself here, and was it worth it?” He asked me one simple question, and that made me recall the past 5 years in an instant. It all started in 1917. “Anjelica, I know it will be difficult for a while, but as soon as I have made enough money to support our family, I will come back immediately.” “Antonio, I’m not worried about me, I have mama, papa, and the rest of the family here to support me. I am worried about you, you only have your cousin Vincent, and you will only be with him for a couple days.” As the ship’s horn sounded, I knew it was time for me to board the ship, along with what seemed like the rest of southern Italy . It was time to leave the only place I have known my whole life for a new, temporary home in America. I said the only thing that I could to my wife to help put her at ease. “Don’t worry, I will be safe, and I promise to write often.” I boarded the large steam boat , and almost immediately we embarked.
