I was born exactly 20 years ago today, in a Provo hospital room that is a 15 minute walk from where I am sitting now. My parents are two BYU alumni, I grew up a BYU fan, and now I am a BYU student. Some people would tell me that I haven't made it very far in life, but I would have to disagree. In my 20 years on this earth, I have spent a lot of time, most of it enjoyable, in school. In fifth grade I switched elementary schools in order to participate in the accelerated learning program they had available. This started me on a path that continued as I moved through middle school and high school. School has always been one of my main focuses. I have always enjoyed learning new things, but I also enjoy working hard and achieving. Though at the …show more content…
It was something new and different than anything I had ever done before, and I fell in love with it. I am most definitely an introvert, and before joining guard, I was very shy as well. However, guard helped me to develop my people skills as I worked along side, and grew to love, my team members. These people, though not people I would have met or chosen to be with in other circumstances, have become some of my most valuable friends and have helped me to become the person I am today. In my senior year I was chosen as captain of my color guard team, and through that I was able to grow as a leader and expand my abilities even more. My experience with Color Guard had a large part in shaping who I have …show more content…
One of my all time passions is reading. I credit my love of reading to my dad, who has spent a great portion of his life reading as well. Some of my earliest memories are of my dad reading Harry Potter to me and my siblings, though I was the only child listening. My love of reading has only grown since then. Through reading I have learned about countless worlds and thousands of stories. I have discovered myself in between the pages of many different books, and I have learned more about people and the world arund me. Of all the ways to spend time, reading may be my absolute
Thanks to hours and hours of bedtime stories, I was able to read from the age of 3. In kindergarten I read to my classmates, and by second grade I was reading series like The Boxcar Children and Trixie Belden. Books allowed me to get lost in other worlds full of adventure and excitement. My love for what words can do has extended through high school. I pride myself on my book collection, anything from Hunger Games to The Picture of Dorian Gray. I’ve continued to read all the way through high school, some books four or five times because I love them so much.
Spending every spare moment doing something you love molds you in a way that you would never expect. My time as a member of the Jay County Marching Patriot Color Guard has given me the confidence that I had otherwise lacked. I’ve never necessarily had a loud personality. Spot lights were never something that I craved. Performing in the Indiana color guard circuit has allowed me to gain confidence that I
Reading has became one of my favorite ways to pass time. It allows for you to see others perspective on things or take you to an entirely new place altogether. When I was younger I hated reading until one of my friends suggested I read the uglies series. Which sparked my interest in reading. One of my all time favorite books I have read is Castaway Kid by R.B. Mitchell. This book continues
Some of my earliest memories of reading and writing took place in preschool. My former teacher, Mrs. Williams always made reading a fun and new experience which helped encourage us to read. I remember always being excited to read a new book as if I were embarking on a new adventure. My mother also encouraged me to read by reading to my brother and I at bedtime. She also gave us plenty of genres to choose from. Even though my dad did not reach much, my mom was very much interested in books about British crime mysteries. My brother, on the other hand, read anime’ comics and video game instruction pamphlets. Although reading has not been my strongest subject, the subject has always been part of my life.
My love of reading blossomed when I was a child, because my parents showed me how wonderful reading is. There were countless nights when I remember myself as a little girl refusing to go to sleep before ‘tucking dad into bed’ by reading him a picture book. Not only did I uphold that tradition though, but my mother is a preschool teacher, so she gets really into reading out loud, and she would help me read books such as The Boxcar Children set, The Secret of NIMH and The Chronicles of Narnia weekly until I didn’t need help anymore.
Growing up I was never a big fan of reading, but as I got older I noticed books are very essential. They are filled with adventures and lessons that only exist in wildest imagination. Without books many of us wouldn't know half the things we know today. Books teaches us math , science, history ,and even how to use a computer or how to play a sport. With so many different genres to choose from and millions of books to read , the task of reading can never get boring, especially when you're actively reading
As I look back on my childhood, I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t fond of reading. I love the way a good book just draws you in and it is almost impossible to set it down because you want to know what happens next! Looking back to my earliest moments I can always remember my mom and grandma always reading me books for hours and hours at a time. My favorite saying when I was younger was, “just read one more!” I couldn’t go to sleep without my mom at least reading me five books! My favorite was “The Little Mermaid” but I loved all of the princess books and I had possibly every one you could think of!
Reading has been one of my favorite hobbies since I was a little child. I grew up as a normal child should grow and eventually I had to start learning for me to fit in society. My literacy started many years ago, after I knew how to talk and communicate with people. Reading my alphabet was quite stressful and I had to be given a hand by my family members. I remember my parents reading with me and it was the most meaningful and memorable way to spend time with me. This is because I liked reading a lot and I was eager to learn so that I could fit in with my older siblings. My favorite books were storybooks taking about adventures and fairytales
Reading has always been a pass time I enjoyed doing, there was just something about the fact that endless stories could be created with a combination of words and phrases. Without a doubt, Reading expands one’s knowledge on endless topics as well as expands creativity through inspiration of the various works and forms or literature. Personally, as I grew older and more curious with reading I began exploring different genres to read. My causal reading went from basic non-fiction books to reading things like
“Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily often helplessly into another’s skin, another voice, another soul,” wrote Joyce Carol Oates.I remember how mesmerized I felt when my mom read to me, especially the sensation I felt as I imagined the soft breeze touching my skin, and the fragrance of its nature overpowering my senses. I love to escape from reality, experiencing the story like I was there. Reading has been a big part of my life, but I have had many obstacles that prevented me from really enjoying the pleasure of reading.
I will restate that yes I do not have the passion or enjoy reading, but with reading being something always present in our lives this process makes it doable. Reading shouldn’t just be something we do because we have to, whether we find pleasure in it or not it should be something we retain. We don’t learn by doing nothing, we need to constantly be engaging our minds into literature or any work. This frequent jogging of the brain trains us to be more intellectual. Reading is great, but make sure you understand it. Take notes, do research, talk to others let the reading engulf your life for that time momentarily. Don’t dwell or harp on certain readings but allow it to be knowledge to our brains, making us a more well- rounded person. Reading has helped me not to be narrow minded on so many subjects: religion, culture, relationships, life. Reading has given be respect for the world our ancestors lived in, the world we live in and the world to come for our future
When I was a little girl I loved to read. I didn’t really have much else to do considering I lived out in the country with no other children around to play with. My own siblings were much older than me and didn’t have time to entertain their baby sister, so as soon as I learned to read, books quickly became one of my main recreational activities. That changed however later in my life when I developed depression.
I absolutely adore literature of all sorts and am an avid reader of anything and everything. I have always loved picking up a good book and am able to sit down and read for hours. This is a passion that has only grown with time and will only continue to grow as long as a good bookstore or library close by.
At this point in my life, reading would definitely not make a list of my favorite things to do, but this wasn’t always the case. Some of my youngest memories involve reading, and many of these memories are enjoyable. Every night before bed my mom would read to me, and I remember begging to read just one more before she tucked me in almost every night. This is when my love for reading sparked. Throughout grade school, I continued to read frequently and never found it to be a chore; however, once middle school hit I no longer included reading as a past time or found it pleasurable. Looking back now I realize this was when English class included more forced literature, and school consisted of reading extensive pages in textbooks. Reading
Reading has had a place in my life from a young age with two young working parents putting themselves through school, books often kept me busy and quiet. When I started elementary school it took me longer to develop my reading skills if it wasn’t for my favorite book series Amelia Beldia I don’t think I ever would have caught up. The moment I fell in love with reading I was in second grade on a school night I stayed up all night reading a long book about animals. I even woke up my parents at 4 am to tell them how proud I was of myself. Reading in a classroom setting is difficult for me when I'm not interested in the story. The proficiency tests throughout the years k-5th where the worst. Terrible short stories about potato farming, bird flight patterns were not interesting enough to keep my hyperactive mind on track. Against all odds, I was able to focus and graduate
