There is a lot of problems in the world, and people won’t do anything to solve these type of problems. Some of the problems are like pollution, population, not enough clean air, and many more. The one that focuses my mind more, and makes me more upset about is students my age, and older dropping out of high school. The reason this upsets me so much is because they don’t know how much they are affecting their life, and how much it’s going to hurt them in the future. I think this problem has become so huge in the United States that I am going to tell you how I would fix this problem, and why it is such a big problem. According to google 1.2 million students in the United States drop out of high school every year. That means that 1.2 million people are struggling to get a job, and suffering to get money. The reason this concerns me the most is knowing that people my age are making this big decision too early, and regretting it later in life. The reason I think this problem should be fixed as soon as possible is so we can lower homeless people, and lower people with no jobs. As we all know, it is not easy to get a job here in the United States even with a high school diploma, now imagine how people are struggling to get a job without a high …show more content…
The way parents can do this is by them talking to their son or daughter about how high school is important these days, and how they cannot do anything in life without it. They need to tell their daughter or son that just because maybe some of their family have a job, and they dint go to high school doesn’t mean that there are going to have the same luck, too. Even though your son or daughter will be trying to convince you, don’t because think of their future, and how bad you would feel seeing them in the street, and suffering! This is one of the solutions I thought of for this
The current situation of high school students dropping out has been steadily declining since the early 1990’s. This could serve society very well if that trend continues to a point where dropping out of high school become relatively unheard of. A social dysfunction of high school is that it creates a class system between those with a high school diploma and those without one. The manifest function of high school is to provide people with the skills and critical thinking ability to obtain some type base level skilled work as well as provides a way to help keep kids safe and out of trouble. In contrast, a high school dropout would have none of those functions and would likely not be employed in skilled work and as a result might have to turn to criminal activities for an income.
In the United States, over 1.2 million students drop out of high school every year. This is about one student every 26 seconds or 7,000 students a day. These alarming statistics are unfortunately a reality. Many of these kids face severe consequences throughout their life because of this one bad decision. These challenges could be avoided if students are required to graduate and receive their diploma. Students should be required to stay in school until the age of 18 to protect their well-being, ensure they won’t make a decision that they will likely regret, and give them more opportunities in their adulthood.
From 1972 to 2006 high school dropout rates decreased from 6.1 percent to 3.8 percent. A majority of this decline occurred between 1972 and 1990, when the rate dropped to 4 percent. However, from 1990 to 1995 there was a surprising increase in dropout rates (Laird & others, 2008). Since then there have been numerous debates and discussions on the issue of dropout rates and how to handle them appropriately. From the information above, it is very evident that the United States wasn’t directly involved with the matter. As a result, stated before, President Barack Obama made his claim towards this issue. This urged most states across the nation to raise the dropout age (Ho, 2017). In fact, a study co-authored by Alan Krueger, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, found that in some states approximately 25 percent of potential dropouts stayed in school since the compulsory schooling age was moved to 18. With an additional year of schooling that 25 percent will increase their earnings by at least 7 percent when
Earning a diploma, a degree or even a trade can significantly affect one's future financial status. An education-or lack thereof- can mean the difference between being poverty stricken or financially stable. College graduates earn an average of 66 percent more than non graduates and often enjoy additional benefits, including greater job opportunities and promotions.(Source: study.org) However, according to spotlightonpoverty.org, 69 percent of students graduate from college on time, yet many graduate without the skills needed for college or work. Without an education chances of obtaining a decent paying job is slim, which can result in a life of impoverishment. "Policymakers and education leaders must implement strategies to reduce the high school dropout rate and adequately prepare high school students for college, while providing low income students with the support they need to attain a degree or credential."
The United States is known to offer the students one of the best educations in the world, unfortunately, there are 2-3 million youths aged, 16-24 years’ old who are without postsecondary education and are "disconnected". “By “disconnected” we mean, young people who are not in school and have been out of work for a substantial period, roughly a year or more” (239). This shows that many young men have no interest in learning but are taking away from those who had an education and can't find a job or got laid off, which isn't fair. Others from the age 16-24, are not enrolled in school and seem to not have a consistent income. People disconnected from the world will lack employment and earnings which will affect their future wages and job opportunity.
Reminiscing back to the first day of freshman year, when I sat down in my history class and my teacher told us a story where he had seen a homeless teenager scrounging for money to complete strangers. The homeless teenager then asked my teacher for cash and was handed some spare change. My teacher then proceeded to ask the teenager what had happened. The teenager responded, “I dropped out of high school my sophomore year,” then proceeded to walk off in sorrow and regret. Many of us know someone who dropped out of high school, who are currently homeless, or still living with their parents. Having a high school education leads to a better future because the homeless teen faced hardships such as living in poverty, he couldn't find a stable job,
In life there are many struggles that interfere with a students education. In the 1970s, the United States had the world’s highest high school graduation rate. Today, we are ranked number twenty-one which shows a decrease in students that graduate. Lowering the dropout rate can solve several economic and social problems. Dropping out of high school has become a controversial topic that will continue for ages to come. Students should be required to stay in school until the age of eighteen because those without a high school diploma have higher unemployment and lower job satisfaction, have lower earnings, and have a higher likelihood of ending up in jail or on public assistance
Another way to better prepare high school students for their future is changing the way they are taught. Right now, students are being taught by a teacher standing in front of a classroom, telling them what they should know. This system of teaching is a major problem because it doesn’t cater to the students. Teachers prepare what they are going to teach in class every day and usually it takes the whole class period. That leaves little room for students to ask questions they have on the material. If they do have questions they need answered, they have three options, stay after class, ask a friend, or email they teacher. Usually, students don’t have time to stay after class, friends won’t know the answer either, and teachers don’t have time to answer the email in time. This leaves the student not knowing the material and not taking in the information they need to.
In addition, high school dropouts have caused many hardships that negatively affect the American economy. Individuals, who have not received high school credentials, live such experiences as poverty, unemployment, teenage parenthood, and criminal activity (Esch, 2003). For example, without the minimum of a high school diploma, individuals are susceptible to a cycle of poverty (AYPF, 2006). Esch (2003) explained that in any given year, the likelihood of slipping into poverty is about three times higher for high school dropouts than for those who finish high school. He mentioned that high school dropouts lack many skills to be hired for decent jobs; therefore, students are more susceptible to be dependent on the public assistance. Researchers revealed that if one third of high school dropouts were to remain in school and earn a diploma, the federal government would save almost 11 billion annually from reducing funds needed for food stamps, housing
Each year, 1.2 million students drop out of high school in the United States alone. According to Dropoutprevention.org teenagers leave school because they feel they cannot complete course requirements, cannot keep up with school assignments or feel they do not connect with their teachers. When the young adults stop their education, they no longer have positive examples to follow and lose a plan for their life in the future. Teens are not yet experienced enough to make these types of life changing decisions. It is important for the government to set regulations for them to follow so they have a better opportunity of success later in life. Students should be required to stay in school until they are eighteen years old because high school teaches them life skills and their diploma qualify
According to Arne Duncan, 25% of U.S. high school students drop out or do not graduate on time, which is one out of every four people. In the article, “The Vision of Education Reform in the United States,” Duncan also informs that, “Almost one million students leave our schools for the streets each year.” (Duncan). The U.S. used to lead the world in college attainment but is tied for ninth now. The students themselves willingly choose to give up expanding their knowledge, which negatively affects their future. Consequently, they are unable to obtain a well-paying occupation for the price of inadequately acquiring their diploma.
High school dropouts are not only facing a miserable situation in the rest of lives but also
Did you know that 1.2 million high school students drop out of school every year just in the United States alone (11 Facts)? The decrease of high school graduation rates is a fairly important issue, and there are plenty of reasons to propose a change. According to the U.S. Department of Education, the current standard dropout rate of high school students is 7.4%. High school dropouts encounter way more difficulties and challenges than a high school graduate would. An average high school drop out lacks the basic education that one needs in order to be successful in life. They are more likely to face problems dealing with financial insecurity, communication skills, and of course, educational matters. With a high school diploma, one is more likely to get hired for a job, earn a higher income, and educate oneself even further. Some possible causes of high school students dropping out include stress, boredom, family problems, pregnancies, and drugs. With that said, with every issue, there is always a solution. By taking the problem at hand and looking at it from a broad perspective, we can thoroughly identify the source of the high dropout rates of U.S. high school students. There are countless factors that may be the cause of this epidemic, but a few ideas including making learning more relevant, limiting the workload given to students, and providing mandatory classes on drugs and safe sex may possibly be a solution to this
High school is hard. There are bullies, people who harass others. People who have disabilities try harder because they can't understand as well. Kids ask themselves every day: why am I in school maybe I should just drop out. These questions may feel like two sides of the same coin, but there are separate issues here: What are the legal requirements for attending school and dropping out? Even if you can drop out legally, what are the probable consequences? Every state has their own laws as to when a child may drop out. "For instance, several states allow students to leave school if they: have received their parents' written consent and have participated in an exit meeting with school officials are legally emancipated, or are attending high school part time and are either legally employed or enrolled in a private vocational school."
Which has made it hard for these young drop out to find a stable job without a high school diploma. Some people don't really take this much in notice but it should be on of the many problems we should be really focused on. For example, I read this article by, David Levine which explains how a young girl named Beth decided to drop out of high school due to not wanting to wake up early anymore and thinking life would be better if she would just get a job. There are many things one doesn't notice when they make rad decision going back to Beth she didn't really think that finding a job would be hard but it was really hard for her to find a well paying job with such low education she had. Students need to realize that dropping is not an easy way out it's actually the hardest way out with such a young mindset all you think about is
