Why I Want To Be A Firefighter

I chose to research the occupation of becoming a Colorado State Patrol (CSP) Trooper for several reasons. The first being that for as long as I could remember, I have always wanted to serve my great country either in the military or as a law enforcement officer. I know that both fields are growing in need, while sadly shrinking in support so why not fulfill my career desires and do my part in serving my country. Subsequently to my father retiring from serving twenty years in the Navy, he looked around for a new career and ended up finding the CSP. After the almost fatal accident my grand mom was in, this passion grew stronger of helping others. The fact that firefighters help people when they need help the most makes the job all the more awesome. Joining the fire department gives me the power to help others in extreme circumstances and gives me the potential power to have a positive impact in some one’s life.

As an American, you are granted special freedoms that many others do not have, but do you know why you are able to have those freedoms? Is it the politicians? No, it is the men and women in uniform fighting overseas. As the backbone of our military, the infantryman plays a valuable role in the success of our armed forces. Many people know of our nation’s heroes. Unfortunately, many do not know what they do, the strength they need to do it, or how they undertook the task of joining the United State’s infantry.

Danny was born on November 21, 1973, in Ottawa, KS. I asked Danny what his childhood was like, his response was, “My father was in the military, we moved around about every three years. We lived in Germany for three years, came back for three years, then went back to Germany. About 1982 - 1985 came back to Fort Sill, OK, and my father left the military.” “How did you feel about your father being in the military? I questioned. “Well, it was rough as first; we kinda got used to it. I mean, I’m glad that he did what he wanted to do, he wanted to help people.” Danny said, with a little smile. “I bet you were really proud of your father.” I said. My chosen career field is in public service. Precisely a career in firefighting. I believe firefighting is a great career choice as I enjoy the work that it involves, and there is a demand that will never stop for firefighters, as fire will always be around forever. The fire department offers a large variety of services to the public. Some of the major tasks that are performed in the fire service range from providing medical care as an Emergency Medical Technician, Entering a burning structure to search for any trapped occupants, suppressing the fire from the exterior or interior, removing a victim that is trapped inside a vehicle involved in an accident, cutting up a tree that fell over the roadway, to helping the elderly up into bed

What I initially thought would just be a summer job turned out to be an enriching experience. Being CPR and lifeguard certified, I became a camp guard for my town pool. The town camp would come to my pool during the week when I worked, and I formed new connections with many children. During the summer, I also taught these children swim lessons.

We are the most technically advanced nation in the free world but yet we have not been able to reduce the number of firefighter fatalities over the years. Its one of the great mysteries of the world today. Our gear is better than what they wore thirty years ago, its better than what they wore ten years ago and we still lose an average of one hundred firefighters every year. I know that not all are dying in structure fires but just one is one too many.

Ever since I was a young boy, I always wanted to be a firefighter. I played firefighter with my friends and we pretended to put our house and other objects out with the garden hose. We would jump out of the back of my dad’s truck with our hose just like the firefighters jumping out of their trucks. Every time I would see the fire truck drive by I would wave and say to my mom, “that is going to be me one day.”

Firefighting itself doesn’t require traveling except, from job to job. This job is available nationwide, so it gives you the decision as to where you would like to live. Where ever your station is effects the benefits you’ll receive for this job, because it varies from city to city. For example: in Lynchburg, VA the benefits consists of Vacation leaves, paid holidays sick leave personal leave and health and dental insurance are a few of the numerous benefits that are given.

To reach my goals, I will have to make certain sacrifices. I plan on becoming an EMT to better my chances for medical school, and then I plan on entering military service to pay for medical school and to broaden my skill level within the field of medicine. With this training, experience, and discipline, I believe that I will be a perfect candidate for medical school

Pursuing the career of firefighting can be a very rewarding experience, however being a home town hero and saving lives is not always an easy task. Firefighters have to be ready for anything at any time whether it be responding to a car accident or a structure fire; they have to be prepared. Firefighters also have to have the ability to handle stress as well as have strong physical capabilities. In Ontario, there are many testing processes that aspiring firefighters have to take part in before they can be recruited. The testing components include a written aptitude test to measure reading and writing comprehension, as well as physical testing that includes aerobic and job related skills.

It is with great enthusiasm that submit my application for the position for Police Officer Recruit for the City of Germantown. Moreover, my educational background has prepared me for the role of a Police officer Recruit. In particular, my study of Criminal Justice has given me a solid background so that I can perform as an officer with great integrity.
