This summer, I went to Thailand and spent two weeks shadowing a veterinarian. I learned how to spay and neuter cats and dogs to keep their populations manageable. Sometimes, when cats need to be treated by veterinarians, they get skittish. So, I learned how to restrain them to check them better. One problem common to dogs is skin disease. To address this, I learned how to perform skin scraping to treat them for infectious symptoms and diseases, such as hair loss, scaling, or crusting. A frequent disorder of horses is colic. When a horse has colic, they have abdominal pains. To help them, I learned about how colic originates and how to treat it. Many elephants are wounded from injuries, infections, or abuse. To help heal them, I learned how to dress their wounds. Before visiting Thailand, I didn’t know how many animals are treated by veterinarians and how many ways veterinarians help them. This hands-on experience has given me a better insight as to what a veterinarian does and has solidified my career
