Coming from a Mexican immigrant family I have learned to recognize since a very young age that because of the status that my parents are placed in they cannot pursue a better future like the one I want. I have been given the opportunity to challenge myself with obtaining a higher education than just high school itself. My parents have demonstrated to me through their hard work that I have to value this opportunity unless I want to end up with low paying job. My life long dedication comes from seeing my parents make sacrifices in order for my education to continue.

I stand here today, to talk to the esteemed and prominent legislators of the United States Congress about those whose voices are often drowned out by the politics of their situation. As a diverse population in educational background, socioeconomic level, and nationality, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to those who have immigrated to the United States’. Understanding this eliminates the need for false and harsh assumptions that only create a greater gap between our communities. Having grown up in a community made up of immigrants from every corner of Latin America, I can testify to the work ethic and integrity of the people who shaped me into the person I am today.

My mom came from Honduras and just like many immigrant parents do, she passed on her hopes and dreams to me while she had to work a minimum wage job to take care of both of us. Most of my life I didn't expect to graduate high school, let alone even go to college. But one day when I was in grade 8 I realize something. Hustling would lead me to being dead or in jail and that I wouldn't be able to achieve my mom goals that she had for me and to able to take care of her later on in life.

Why I believe that I should be awarded this scholarship is because I am person who tries and works my best, even when life goes a turn that is either unexpected or not my way. Starting at a young age I was behind in my classes when I was younger, I would have more of a struggles compared to my other classmates. I am always improving. My most hardest subject for me was Math. It is a never ending battle with Math, but everyday I am improving. I was born and raised most of my childhood in Colombia with a big family. My grandmother had fifteen kids and my mom was the youngest one of them all. She was also the only one that was able to go to college; my uncles didn’t even finish high school. Because my mother was the only one that went to college I was expected to go to college, not only from my mom, but also my family was expecting me to.
