A year ago, I was hired for my first real job with consistent hours and biweekly paydays. I had expected this job to simply be my source of income and where I’d spend every other weekend along with select weekdays after school. What I did not expect was for my job to shape my opinions on life and influence how I want my future to be. In August of 2016, I began taking classes to become an STNA. For those who do not know what that is, an STNA is defined as a state tested nurse aid, meaning my job description is to care for those residing in the nursing home. I help the residents go to the bathroom, take a shower, feed them dinner, etc. Those tasks are called their Activities of Daily Living, also known as necessary activities for a healthy and comfortable life. Although those are the type of tasks my job description lists, much more goes into the work. …show more content…
They may go from all their time spent at home with only their spouse or children taking care of them to 24 hour care from revolving aides and nurses who are always checking in. Emotional distress is not uncommon in the nursing home. Some residents feel so lost with the inability to move on their own, some feel alone and do not try to socialize with the others. It makes their stay, most of which are permanent, almost miserable, where the intention is to have an easier life. It is always hard for me to watch those who do not want help, but I still try to do everything I can to help and create a happier
I have also noticed this is the population who most often isolates themselves from the rest of the residents. They chose to remain in bed, keep to themselves, and not get involved in the activities offered at the facility. It seems they fear being involved in the life of the nursing home means they have accepted their current situation, and they do not want others to think that. I have often heard these residents say things like, “I don’t belong here” or “I don’t want to be around all those old people.”
Do you have a loved one in a nursing home? Imagine if your grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle, mom, dad or other loved one was being abused. How would this make you feel? Abuse does not necessarily mean physical abuse (hitting, scratching, pulling hair, etc.). Other types of abuse include sexual, neglect, exploitation, emotional, abandonment, and self-neglect.
I commend you for working as a site supervisor for young children. I have worked on a volunteer basis for 11 years for a summer camp planning activities, and counseling children ages of 8-18. Planning activities can be a real daunting task, you must make sure you keep the children busy, and that can be pretty tuff at times. I see you want to be an Admissions Counselor in the future, I have done this as part of my position as a Nursing Coordinator, it is rewarding and fun at times, but also can be a difficult challenging position. The position requires someone that has a true passion for helping others change their lives.
Anyone who has ever worked in a long term care facility will tell you that at times it can be very difficult. Working with individuals who are suffering from dementia and other kinds of cognitive impairment that come with age can be emotionally draining. We know that this is not the way that it is supposed to be. These individual are a fathers, mothers, and friends who had rich incredible lives. Now they have lost the ability to care for themselves and at times are not even able to recognize the one that they love. The inability to express their thoughts and feelings in a way that others can understand and connect with them leads to a great deal of frustration. The feeling of not being in control of their own lives leads to agitation. At one
Nurses who work for patients in the acute and critical care settings can become certified in their specific field and obtain their CCRN board certification granted by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). If the nurse has met the eligibility requirements and passed the CCRN examination, they then have earned their CCRN credentials that validate their knowledge, understanding, and performance in the care of acutely and critically ill patients (American Association of Critical-Care Nurses [AACN], n.d.). The advantages of this certification include promoting the continuation of excellent care in the nursing field, helping maintain up-to-date knowledge on acute and critical care nursing, and is also a way to provide yourself with a sense of pride and achievement in reinforcing the higher level of specialty care and experiences needed in this field of nursing. According to the AACN, research has linked higher levels of clinical knowledge, skills, and experience with CCRN certification (AACN, n.d.).
Ever since I was a child I have always loved taking care of infants. I have an extremely large family so there was always babies to tend to. My grandmother babysat all of my cousins and my, since I was one of the oldest grandchildren I became another set of hands to help with all the children. I changed my first diaper when I was 6 years old, and I still remember my grandmother watching over me as I secured the wings of the diaper down. I have always known I wanted to have a career in the medical field, but it wasn't until a few years ago when it finally clicked and I realized the neonatal intensive care unit was the place I wanted to be.
The picture that I envision for myself is possibly working as a director of services for one of the retirement homes in my area. I am currently applying for areas of sales and service. I cannot completely run or manage a retirement or nursing home with the proper licensing in my state. By moving into a center at this level I can learn some of the aspects of the business before I get the necessary licenses or certifications.
Each day as a Hospice Nurse I touch lives. I cannot imagine a job more suitable for me. Each work day I make a difference in someone’s life. No one can die for us, but we don’t have to die alone; and, that is why I became a hospice nurse. Every day is different, presents new challenges, and always touches my heart. It’s beautiful when talent, and passion come together to make a difference.

To begin, abuse in nursing homes can happen in many different areas of the patient’s life. An elderly patient can be abused emotionally, sexually, financially, physically, and can be neglected. Some of these abuses begin to occur when the elderly patient becomes more physically frail, and they are less able to stand up against threats and bullying. The other abuses begin, when the patient is no longer able to take care of his/her own finances.
Polypharmacy is primarily defined as the concurrent use of five or more medications by a patient, and is widely seen in older adults. The frequency of polypharmacy in elderly patients likely reflects the necessity to treat acute ailments, chronic disease states and co-morbid conditions. While the use of combination drug therapy is often necessary, the combination of aging, inappropriate prescribing and polypharmacy can result in significant adverse events, drug-drug interactions, increased fall risk and hospitalizations. Studies indicate that approximately 50% of elderly patients are prescribed medications with no clinical benefit or indication.[1]Geriatric patents are more susceptible to adverse drug events due to physiological changes, therefore it is imperative to understand..
"The two most important days in your life are the day you were born, and the day you find out why." -Mark Twain. That has been a favorite quote of mine for as long as I can recollect. Some people spend their entire lives never knowing what it feels like to be able to earn a living while at the same time fulfilling their passion or dreams. However i would be lying if i was to say that i don 't understand why. I am thirty one years of age, and deciding to make a career change and leave the job that provides a security blanket, to pursue the job that provides me with a purpose is exhilarating but nonetheless terrifying. When asked the question "Why do you want to become a nurse?" I could answer the same way that everyone else does by saying what it is I anticipate you want to hear or i can answer with my heart, I choose the latter. While a sizably voluminous part of my zealousness for nursing is centered on helping people, it goes much deeper than that for me. I have always believed that i should pursue a career that i would be proud of. That if a stranger was to ask me what i do for a living, I can answer them with a sense of pride, confidence and self admiration. Nursing would give me that. The path that has lead me up to this point in my life hasn 't always been the the most rewarding but i did what many of us do, settled. Just letting the years pass by, and getting no closer to reaching my goal. For most of my adult life i have been in the restaurant industry working as a
I totally agree with you when you said that sometimes the people working at a nursing home do not care. My grandmother had a relative at a rehab center for the elderly and I took her a few times to go visit him and one of the times I went to one of the many nurses stations available there to go get some batteries for his tv remote they gave it to him with no batteries and he had already been there for many days. Any ways when I got to the nurses station it was empty the board all filled up with red dots with the patients room light up that they need it help his been one of those and the staff chit chatting in one of their rooms like it was just them in there, it upset me greatly because I know needing batteries is nothing compare to what most

Globalisation is a process by which national economies become more integrated and interdependent with one another. It is the increasing expansion of money, culture and ideas. It is the interaction and integration among the people, companies and governments of different nations. It is shaping the world around us in ways and at a rate that was unimaginable just two decades ago. Advances in transport such as the steamship, jet engine, and container ships and in communication infrastructure including the Internet and mobile phones have been major factors in globalisation, generating further interdependence of economic and cultural activities. Globalisation is in our everyday lives. The clothes we wear and food we eat have all been transported within days or weeks to our homes our towns. Also, most products have been advertised using our modern technology such as the internet and modern printing presses.
