I’m on my way home from school, my mom is driving. The traffic is terrific like it is always in Santo Domingo city. We stop at a red light and a kid wearing decrepit garments and with an unhappy face gets near our car asking for alms. This is not uncommon at all in the Dominican Republic, but every time it happens it breaks my heart. I constantly wonder where these children sleep at night. While the Dominican Republic has exquisite locations to offer, it also has its imperfections like any other place in the world. Political corruption, poverty, lack of education and crime are among the reasons why my parents want to move to the United States—the land of opportunities. My parents have always been hard workers and dream chasers. They have told me how in their early years they lived in poverty and were determined to never go back to these conditions. Years before I was born, my parents planned to live in the United States. It wasn’t until my older brother finished high school that my parents thought it was the ideal time to move. In the Dominican Republic, good quality of life is only found by the lucky and the wealthy; my parents were well aware of this fact and craved for betterment. My parents would tell me that in the near future we will be living in America and that here we’ll find peace and success. All the necessary proceedings to start our lives in America were being done.
