Words cannot express my gratitude. Receiving the Bettye McDonald Caldwell and Fred T. Caldwell, Jr. scholarship is truly an honor! After the lottery scholarship, I end up having to pay for about half my tuition, which makes this gift is an incredible blessing. Going to school full-time and working full-time is a difficult balancing act, but not working is not an option. When I opened the email stating I had been awarded this scholarship, a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders and an overwhelming sense of accomplishment overtook me. It gave me a deep and powerful feeling of success. This scholarship award is proof to me that hard work does pay off. It is a motivator to work even harder to achieve my goals and reach my dream career. I sincerely thank you with every piece of my heart.

My reasons for wanting to transfer are mainly due to my unusual high school and college path. I began high school at the same time as my peers, but unlike them, I left after completing the 10th grade. My high school was unusual in that it ended in the 10th grade, and the graduating class was encouraged to attend one of the other high schools in the district or the local community college for the last two years. I didn’t feel as though those were the right options for me, as I felt as though I needed more than a high school and I wanted a more rigorous education than what I would find at either of those locations. My father is going to retire in some years and my mother is a house wife. They both have invested in their house heavily therefore these reasons might affect my family’s ability to fund my college tuition.

Back when I was a senior in high school, I applied to Rutgers but decided to go to my local community college, Camden County College, due to financial issue and not wanting to put the burden of my education on my parents’ shoulders. I also felt that I was not prepared to take on a university and that going to community college would help me get a feel for what college would be like. Two years later, after working diligently, I am about to graduate with an Associates degree in Computer Science and the feeling that I am prepared to take on public university. While I am truly grateful for my current college, I felt that I was not too enriched in computer science. However, I want to continue my education at Rutgers to get more extensive and thorough study in computer science to achieve my goal. I hope to continue my education at Rutgers University to fulfill my goal of becoming a competent and knowledgeable software engineer.

My reasons for transferring are entirely academic. I have made many good friends at Rutgers, and I have studied with some wonderful professors. However, I am eager to gain a sophisticated understanding of Mathematics as well as Computer Science. An institution excellent in both Math and CS would be a better choice for me.

I felt as though I didn’t really love what I was studying, that I wasn’t really connecting with other students who shared my academic interests, and that my options were limited when it came to exploring things I really had an interest in, such as community/public health. I want to transfer to George Mason because of the multicultural campus community, the excellent academic programs, and because of Mason’s ideal location. My uncle, Eugene Koranteng, attended Mason after coming from Ghana to the USA, and made his mark as a triple jump record holder. Growing up in Jersey City has allowed me to grow up in an environment like this. Jersey City not only allows one to understand other cultures, but also enables us to interact and live with people from a variety of different backgrounds. Hello to a new adventure.” This quote sums up the feelings that come to mind as I fill out this application to transfer to Rutgers New Brunswick. My experience so far at Rutgers has taught me a lot about myself, and the people around me. It taught me that I am a part of a bigger picture, and each of us as individuals have a huge impact on the society around us. However, I have come to peace that it is time to move on from the Newark campus and pursue my degree at Rutgers New Brunswick School of Arts and Sciences. New Brunswick would be a more logical option for my studies due to a shorter commute from home, and a better computer science program.

One thing I needed in my college of choice was that it had to be small because I knew I would be able to focus better. My first choice, Towson University, was a large school and all my friends currently go there, but God, and my perspicacious mother, clearly knew I should not go there because of the countless distractions that would have hindered my success. The small atmosphere of Catawba enabled them to have a family style relationship all around campus. I am used to this family style because it reminded me of my high school. Another reason I chose to enroll at Catawba was because of its six hour distance away from my home known as the DMV, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, area. I have been in that area all my life and living somewhere else for I think would be greatly beneficial to my development as a person and would broaden my perspective. The other aspect of moving away from where you have been all your life is that you have to leave behind all your family and friends and that is one of the hardest parts. A Rutgers education will not only allow me to grow as a college student but as a person overall. Graduating from Rutgers will hold a greater value in the outside world when I apply for jobs as this university has many well-known schools like the Business School or the School or Arts and Sciences. As I came close to transferring, I began to look at different CUNY schools to attain my bachelor’s degree. They have great reputations, provide exceptional education, and are affordable. I visited John Jay, Hunter, and Queens College. I weighed the pros and the cons of each school, and decided Queens College was the best fit for me. When I got accepted I was unbelievably excited and eager to go. I have one more semester left before I make the transition into Queens College.
