Creon, why was he such a bad king?
In the play “Antigone” by Sophocles, the king Creon, Antigone’s uncle/great uncle would be labeled as a bad king by the time the end of the book came. Throughout the book you slowly start to realize that he is not the greatest king for Thebes. He is stubborn, he is paranoid, and he is selfish and power hungry, and when being a king these qualities are not the best to have.
Creon, the king of Thebes, was an awful king for the reason that he was stubborn. When he made the law not to burry Polyneices because he was a traitor, a sentry was sent to him. The sentry told him that someone had disobeyed his law of not burying Polyneices and had buried him anyway. Creon immediately tells the sentry to find out who this person is. When he comes back he brings along with him none other then Antigone. Creon is surprised that it is his own blood. He is disgusted. He asks questions to her, she seems really proud of what she did, she does not even try to deny it. He immediately assumes that Ismene, Antigone’s sister (also related to Creon), is also at fault and wants to kill her as well. People through out the book, such as Hameon (Creon’s son) and the prophet known as Teiresias try to convince him not to kill Antigone. He is stubborn and doesn’t listen, “This girl is guilty...who is the man here, if this crime goes unpunished? ... she and her sister win bitter death for this.” (Antigone; page 209) This shows how he did not even care that it was his own blood who disobeyed, he was still going to kill her, he even suggested killing her sister as well. Creon was a bad king because he was paranoid as well. You constantly see his fear of anarchy and it causes him to make bad decisions. Anytime someone mentions that he should change the law because it is his own blood he refuses. He is scared of the public’s opinion of him, he makes irrational decisions because he is always worried that he has to be the best king and that if he makes the wrong choice the people will rebel. He constantly thinks people are out to get him. Even though when someone says that all of his people disagree with his decision but they are to scared to tell him, he still
Creon is a strong headed guy who will not listen to anybody but himself because he’s the king. When he speaks to everyone he always ends up insulting them and saying stuff that he ends up regretting like; “They did not want to obey me! And, I know this very well, whoever did this, did it because he was paid money by these malcontents.” Creon thinks that everyone has to listen to him that he’s the best Creon is very arrogant he is full of himself he thinks that no one is more powerful than him. Another quote is “Me nothing, with that i have everything.” He is the kind he controls everything but not anyone. Creon thinks everyone is like a slave to them because he’s the king his “power” goes to his head and he won’t listen to anyone.Creon is full of power in his head he is selfish and stubborn. He doesn’t deserve to be a king. Creon is prideful, he won’t let anyone speak up to him or tell him what to do. He also says “Am i to rule this land at someone else’s whim or myself?”
In the play Antigone, Creon starts off as the loyal king of Thebes. He is loyal to the gods and loyal to the welfare of Thebes. However, over the course of the play, Creon degenerates into a tyrant. His degeneration is showing his character development. Creon’s pride about the human law also develops throughout the play, creating conflict with the divine law. When Antigone rebels against his law, he becomes stubborn, and makes myopic decisions and grows into his hamartia. Besides his hamartia, Creon’s position as the king makes him a power hungry man. His power madness degenerates him into becoming a ruthless and vindictive man, even to his family. However, over the course of the play, Creon begins to see that because of the laws of men, he was being blinded of what’s
He manifests his selfish, merciless, and vain personality through Haemon in which causes his downfall. His people’s words fall onto his deaf ears. Even though he is their king, he will turn a blind eye and do whatever he pleases. Haemon’s quarrel does no avail either. Antigone’s death is certain and Creon is determined for her to die. He wants her to pay for breaking his law without a second doubt because he will think that her death will bring peace in the city. Overall his leading trait is what kills him- pride. His pride makes him think of himself as the supreme of all. In his eyes everyone should obey his rules even if they disagree with them. He does not tolerate with those who don’t agree with him and just simply dismisses them with an insulting comment. In the end his actions brought the suicides of Antigone, Haemon, and Eurydice. Each of them taking their own life because of eachother’s death. A king cannot rule by being intolerant. His kingdom will fall
Creon came into power when Oedipus was exiled and died. Throughout the play, Antigone, Creon exemplifies many characteristics. Some are selfishness, stubbornness, and pride. He is selfish because he does only want he wants to do and listens to no one else. He shows his stubbornness when he is unwilling to let Antigone live even
His tragic flaw of excessive pride and arrogance prevents him from being able to logically access circumstances. He goes through a sudden reversal of fortune where he suffers from catastrophic losses, and he realizes that his misfortunes are caused by his own doings. Creon, being the brother of the late queen Jocasta, uncle and brother-in-law to the banished King Oedipus, and uncle to the former King Eteocles has extremely high noble stature (Doc C). Also, he comes from a position of extreme power, as shown by his three separate crowning as King of Thebes. Because of this, Creon as a tragic hero, has much to lose and will “fall from tremendous good fortune” (Doc C), causing the audience to feel a sense of “pity and fear” (Doc C) for Creon. His loss of his family and status due to his tragic flaw makes the audience pity him because his “punishment exceeds the crime” (Doc C) while making them subconsciously fear for themselves because “the hero is better than we are, and still failed” (Doc C). If the hero who is better than we are failed, then how will we compare? Sophocles creates the epitome of a tragic hero in his tragedy, Antigone, by capturing all five traits of a tragic hero into one character:
Antigone retaliates by saying that his law is not that of the Gods so it does not stand. He wants to have Antigone killed, but his son his her fiancé. He tries to explain to the king that the gods would have wanted Polyneices to be buried and that Antigone did the right thing that she should not be punished for it. Creon’s hubris however comes out yet again. He will not even listen to a word his son has to say; however now he does not want to kill her, but to send her away into a tomb, where the Gods can determine her fate.
Is a king weak for being flexible with his laws or taking the opinion of his subjects into account? Sophocles would say no, ruling with a stubborn mindset and overbearing pride is a crime on a divine level. Antigone is a play written by Sophocles which involves a cursed girl, Antigone, who buries her brother Polyneices, who is seen as a traitor, even though it was illegal. After being caught by King Creon, she is sentenced to death and he will not be moved regardless of the majority that is telling him to release her. Instead of dying slowly and painfully, Antigone decides to hang herself before the King comes to his senses and sets her free, her death triggering two more suicides and a curse. Creon’s hard head and irrationality turned out to be a fatal flaw for his character and helped develop the theme of pride being a harmful trait.
Why Can’t Creon Be A Good King But, Instead Being A Tragic Hero With A Weakness Of Caring About His Son Marrying Antigone Who Is A She-Devil Not Obeying The Law.
Creon has more to offer than just his nobility, he has flaw. Creon arrested Antigone's sister Ismene for no reason at all, just because he thought that she did something, and when he had no proof of it whatever. He thought that he had enough courage to pull ismene into the house and accuses her of something she didn’t do. Creon thinks that sense he’s the king then everyone needs to talk to him in a certain way. He gets mad when people talk to him like he’s just a person but he doesn’t realize that their trying to tell him something important and he won’t listen to
Creon is does not think things thoroughly and therefore, he acts rather quickly. For example, in the first ode of Antigone, the Guard brings news to Creon telling him that someone had buried Polyneices’s body. Creon then automatically assumes that the Guard was the one who was responsible for burying the body and says, “No more of this! You are a babbling fool!”. The Guard then replies “If so, I cannot be the one who did it.” Creon then says “Yes, but you did- selling your life for money!”. This shows how impulsive Creon is because he was so quick to assume that the Guard buried the body and that he did it for the money. An effective leader cannot be so impulsive because being impulsive leads to wrongful assumptions and that is what Creon did. He wrongfully accused the Guard for something he did not do which was burying
Throughout the novel Antigone, Antigone is portrayed as a rebellious anarchist who is not afraid to defy king Creon's strict orders. After the death of her brother Polyneices, who Creon believed was a traitor to Thebes, Creon gave specific orders that there should be no proper burial for such a renegade. Knowing the consequences, Antigone willingly disobey Creon’s commands and performed a proper burial for her deceased brother. When Creon heard of this, he became furious and sentences Antigone to death. Antigone denied nothing and accepted the punishment.
Creon is a very stubborn man like when he said this to the guard “This and more- you sold your life for silver. ”(377).Creon is accusing the guard of burying the body even though it wasn't him. Creon doesn't listen to the guard or even want to hear what he has to say but still accuses him of taking bribe. When Antigone was talking to To Ismene Antigone says “I’ll hate you if you're going to talk that way. And you’ll rightly earn loathing of the dead.
A positive trait that comes out of Creon’s case is that he remained loyal to his city while Antigone would be considered a traitor, or a modern-day criminal. Creon did not get flakey when he realized the person behind the crime was his niece and future daughter in law, he remained strong for his reasoning’s and banished her to be executed, which caused more
Creon's self-confidence overrides doing what is right, and causes him to make poor choices. Creon refuses to hear and consider the opinions and ideas of others. He is stubborn and convinced that he is doing what is right by killing Antigone and not burying Polyneices. He does not want to "show [himself] weak before the people or to break [his]sworn word" (iii.26). Creon cares more about his control and power over the people than his character. Creon refuses to lose the loyalty and respect of his people. He wants to be in control. Haemon tells his father, King Creon, "There are other men who can reason, too;and their opinions might be helpful. [He is] not in a position to know everything" (iii.55). Creon is creating an anarchy rather than a democracy. He will not listen to others because of his fear of losing his masculinity. The people of Thebes do not believe killing Antigone is right, and they lose respect for the King. Teiresias gets a sign from the gods that a terrible fate is coming, making Creon aware that he may suffer some dreadful consequences.
By the time he realized that he was challenging the Gods, he was no longer able to renege his past decisions. Creon was no longer strong and strict, but instead was a physical representation of a breakdown. His family and wife were being strangled by Creon’s dictatorship and he never noticed until it was too late. If anyone was to exhibit leadership it surely was not
