“Where they differed was that while sparta had militaristic values, Athenians were democratic,” stated Mr. Duckworth in the passage “Athens and Sparta.” Athens and Sparta were very different in many ways, but the question is if Athens or Sparta had been the better place to live? I believe Sparta would have been the better place to live because Sparta woman had more freedom than other Greek women, Sparta was a protective city-state, and Sparta was an Oligarchy with two rulers. First, is that women had more freedom than other Greek women. Spartan women could create friendships with whoever they please. Many people believe Athens is the best city to live in. In the text, “On the other hand, the ruler of Athens was elected annually. Athens is said to have been the birthplace of democracy, “ this is describing Limited Democracy, Athens government,. As a result, civilians can make some decisions for Athens, but only some laws. However the people that think Athens is a better place to live in are incorrect. Mr.Duckworth states, “Sparta had two rulers in recent times, who rules until they dies,” this is describing an Oligarchy, Sparta’s government,. Even though Athens used a form of democracy civilians could only make limited decisions and “civilians were only a small portion of Athens population, in Athens you had to be a man that owned land and was born in Athens, unlike Sparta where woman and men were called citizens which means there was only a small group of people controlling Athens which is actually called an Oligarchy the same form of government that Sparta had. As a result, Athens government was not really a Democracy, but actually an Oligarchy but in Sparta woman and men were called citizens unlike Athens. Therefore, Sparta was a better place to live
