Why Is Athens Better Than Sparta

Athens v.s Sparta There are many debates about what would you rather live in. The knowledge based Greek city-state of Athens, or the warlike city-state of Sparta. Sparta is better than Athens because they had an amazingly powerful army, they focused more on protecting Greece than trying to take over everything, and most importantly, they had some of the best women’s rights in ancient history.

In Sparta, women were better educated and had more freedom as opposed to Athens where women's rights were limited, they received a minimal education, there were arranged marriages, and it was frowned upon for them to leave the house. The education in Sparta was direct military training beginning at age seven while Athens taught the things we learn with the addition of rhetoric. They had many similarities in geography by both living in the valleys of mountains which gave them a very similar climate and resources. Athens used mathematics, science, and philosophy to build their city-state. Athens had great trading routes due to the location from the Aegean Sea, and they also had a great naval military due to the sea.

Athens had a better government in my opinion. I think Athens had a better government because they created a democracy. According to the Athens and Sparta Document Set, a democracy means “rule by the people”. The Athens also got to abolish politicians they did not like. Athens also had ten generals, meanwhile, Sparta has two kings. In my opinion, I think that having ten generals is better than two kings because they understand you more. Sadly not all Ancient Athens were citizens, but if a free male would be a citizen if his father was a citizen of Athens. Later on, they changed that law, it was then bothering the father and mother had to be a citizen for the child to be considered a citizen. Sadly the women didn’t get that many rights but they soon they got more status. The Athens also made it to where not only the wealthy can engage in the jury service. In the Athens, you have to be an 18-year-old man to complete military training. On the other hand, in Sparta, you have to be a 30-year-old to complete military training. It was obvious that Sparta had more rights and more advantages than Athens, specifically for women. For example, in Document C it states, “Spartan women could move around with reasonable freedom, wear non-constricting clothing, enjoy athletics, and even drink wine.” I personally think that this is good because in Athens, they didn’t have this kind of freedom for women. Also, in Document H, it points out that girls also have more rights by saying, “Girls were educated at age 7 in reading and writing, gymnastics, athletics and survival skills. Could participate in sports; treated more as equals.”

Sparta Is far superior to Athens because their army was fierce and protective, girls received an education, and women had more freedom. The sparta believed this made them strong and better mothers. Lastly, is the best polis of ancient Greece because women had freedom.the series of laws written to address these inequities was provided by the statesman draco .In conclusion, Sparta Is the city state In Athens, an understanding of the world and the arts Is just as important as military strength. Yet in both Persian wars, Athens led the two major battles that led to the defeat of the Persia.

Sparta was definitely more progressive in people equality that the other city-states in Greece. The woman of Sparta had much more rights and opportunities that women in other city-states like Athens. For example, women could own their own land and control their own property and women also wore a special tunic that showed that they had freedom. Women were also free to speak to the husband friends and even remarry to another man if their husband has been gone for too long at war. Unlike in Athens, woman and men were both educated. The Athenians pride themselves on having a greater quality of life than in Sparta. The Athenian economy relies on buying, selling, and trading. The Athenians don’t rely on stealing others’ goods in order to have a proper economy and provide for their people. Athens is a better city-state than Sparta because Athens’ government is a lot fairer than Sparta’s oligarchy, Athens has a better quality of life than Sparta, and Athens has a better economy than Sparta.

As the social studies textbook says, “Spartan women were raised to be strong and vigorous. They participated in sports....[They] had a good deal of freedom and responsibility...they had greater independence than women in other city states.” When other city states treated women like unequals, Sparta was the one that gave women rights. By giving women the right to participte in sports and get an education, the city-state of Sparta coud ensure that the women could give birth to smart and healthy children.

The women in Spartan women were strong and could own land by themselves. This proves that in Athens there wasn’t as much freedom for the women and if people were women sparta would be the best place to be living in. Secondly,

Athens and Sparta had very different styles of treating people. The way people were treated in both places makes a tough decision for me to pick, especially because I am a girl. Women in a Greek city/state known as Athens, were not educated, and were treated the same if not worse than slaves (Athenian, 2005). In Athens, “Women lived in a society completely dominated by men” (O’Pry, 2012). This all ended when the women of Sparta (a Greek city/state) were seen overcoming these issues. The life of a woman in Athens was completely different than a Spartan. Women were treated differently, in Sparta they could manage the land, have their own public opinion, and were treated equal as men, while women in Athens had no public or political rights. Not only was this a big
