Why Is Beowulf Be An Epic Hero

What might one think if they were asked whether or not epic heroes are the most important people in our society? Today, most people might disagree and claim that epic heroes are not the most important. However, in the Anglo-Saxon period, heroes were considered of utmost importance because of their duties, which consisted of fighting battles and protecting their people. Most poets during this period wrote epics that included contents of heroes fighting battles, their glorious victories, and a response of admiration for these achievements. Bards would tell their stories with great emotions, and to a warrior, this was the greatest award one could ever receive. Being known to people and having a place in the community’s memory was a hero’s only consolation against death. Nevertheless, fame was only a result for being an epic hero. So what really created a true hero in the Anglo-Saxon’s eyes? Courage, loyalty, and bravery were the three most essential aspects in the cultural norms of being an epic hero during the Anglo-Saxon period, which is exhibited in the poem by the character Beowulf. The instances of courage, loyalty, and bravery that stand to the Anglo-Saxon’s expectations can be displayed in Beowulf in his defense for Herot. This is proven through Beowulf’s attack against Grendel, in his pursuit of battles against supernatural beasts, and also in his staying to fight off Grendel’s mother. …show more content…

Courage can be defined as showing strength in the face of fear or grief. The biggest example of courage in the story of Beowulf was when he “quickly commanded a boat fitted out, proclaiming that he’d go to that famous king, would sail across the sea to Hrothgar, now when help was needed” upon hearing of Herot’s troubles (112-116). Readers are able to identify Beowulf’s true intentions: immediately rising to help a fellow leader, and showing true courage by risking his life to helping
