Booker T. Washington was brought up with a different upbringing then most slaves during the 1800s; as he would describe as “up from slavery”. Even though he was born a slave, he had a better chance of “equal access” and equality in main stream America. The Black in Latin America video is basically saying that many people of the Hispanic culture don’t acknowledge their Afro-descendants roots. They consider being black as a bad thing. As an African American myself, I am personally offended because the pictures and images used to portray black people are degrading. They picture us with these overly-big features: lips, ears, eyes, and feet looking like monkeys, when in reality we don’t look like that at all. The Latin Americans in The Dominican Republic will never know their roots because they’re too consumed with trying to prove that they’re apart of the white society. It’s true, if they were to come over to the United States, they would be considered black.

Diversity is now, more than ever before, at the forefront of the American conversation. Black people have been slowly but surely making gains in today’s society and in ways that were not possible before. African Americans are more educated and more affluent, and more important as consumers than ever before. By 2017, they are expected to have a spending power of 1.3 trillion dollars (Resilient, 2013). Young, influential, and brand loyal, this group should be the target of many companies. Interestingly enough, there has not been much of an effort on the part of marketers to appeal to this growing group. Additionally, the lack of diversity as well as the alienation of black people in the media is not doing much to allow a wider range of companies to reach them. Black Americans are a powerful group, and smart marketers will put a focus on investing in them to increase their market share.

The United States of America has historical events that underlie the primary example of a country which overcomes every adversity with courage and commitment. Several pieces of history can obviously emphasize the strength of those who inhabited this nation and shaped it into what it is today; one of which is the era of slavery. Slavery is a topic that is often rejected during the mentioning of historical events in America primarily due to the fact that it contradicts what American culture advocates. When attempting to reprimand their previous discriminatory actions towards African Americans, many Americans often fail to realize the impact that African Americans truly had on this country. Without slavery, as inauspicious as the idea may sound, the framework of America would have not been established, its populational growth would not have been as rapid, and the amount of labor that induced economic and military success would be nearly impossible, thus leading to the conclusion that America would not have excelled without slavery.

As I sit here and think about what it is to be Black in America. I realize how there are so many factors that affect African American people daily. One of the most damaging forces tearing at young black people in America today is the popular culture's image of what an "authentic" black person is supposed to look like and how that person is supposed to act. People assume all black males where raised in a single parent home. People assume that if you are a black male, that you sale drugs or you are really great in some type of sport. If you are a black female, they assume you will have kids by different men, referred to as “baby daddy” or they may not even know who the fathers of their children are. One aspect of life for black people in the United States of America that has always remained consistent is white racial hostility. A history of slavery, segregation, unequal protection of the law, and second class citizenship inflicted by a white power structure that dominates on a national level has created a harmful reality for black people. Every aspect of black public life must either be under the control of or in opposition to white supremacy. Every state-sanctioned institution works to use black bodies as tools for the production of capital in any form, yet simultaneously exploits and maltreats black people so that they cannot fully participate in and benefit from the systems which they are indoctrinated to invest in. White America leverages its money, comfort, and tyranny on Black America. It is for this reason that separate spaces are not merely essential to the viability of black counter-publics but inherent to their existence, since black involvement in white spaces and systems typically leads to black assimilation or marginalization. Within these black counter-publics, hip hop and mass connection through new media forms direct attention and allow for personal expression which shapes black worldview and public opinion, but this simply makes black people more comfortable with their oppression and less involved in politics.

America is a diverse country that accommodates a variety of people from various ethnic backgrounds. African Americans are one of a kind who are inhabiting the United States since a long time.The question “Would America have been America without her Negro people?” by W.E.B.Dubois is a strenuous one and has arisen many debates in the past. People say that the answer to this question would merely be a personal opinion, but I think the question itself reflects the right answer. The answer that the question points out is, No! America would not and could not be the America that we come to know without the imprints of these people in the culture and heritage of the country. If any of these pioneers are taken away, you can observe a big hole whether in activism, art, business, athletics, education, music, poetry, literature, politics and spirituality that no other person can fill. The imprint that each of these African Americans have made on the larger cultural landscape has helped shape our nation.The possibilities, opportunities, expectations and greatness that so many of us today have inherited is owed, in large part, to the accomplishments and sacrifices of these people who are incarnations of god. From box braids to dashikis, black culture has been stolen by America and used for their own personal gain, disregarding the historical context and meaning of these traditions or blatantly perpetuating stereotypes.

In the year of 1916, African Americans were brought to Jamestown, Virginia to be used as production of services for free labor. Most African Americans did not have a hopeful future that lie ahead, proper nutrition, or even education for the matter. During the duration of slavery, African Americans had many coping mechanisms to help endure their painful situations such as: singing, dreaming, escape/death, concentration of work and proper education, and sometimes even being mindless. Through these times of slavery, and expanding into different territories, the north and south had bumped heads on if the states would be a free or slave state.

African American’s have participated in every U.S. war. In fact, black revolutionaries served General George Washington even before the colonies became a nation, in the Independence War (Black History). They also took part on the Civil War, where the Union victory would mean a swift on the end of slavery. The enlistment of Africans Americans was unheard from either side of the war until July 17, 1862 when congress passed two Acts allowing African Americans to join the forces of the Union troops, where they proof to be a valuable part of the union forces, exceeding on every tasks and making history. On 1863 president Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation declaring that all slaves that seceded form the union states where free (Black History). Understanding that the poverty of black Americans did not just stay within the home is a big step in understanding urban poverty. Urban poverty reached outside the home, into the parks, schools and playgrounds. With poverties reach being that extensive, there was something other than adversity causing this. The film “Slavery and The Making Of America” covered the beginning of American slavery in the British colonies until the end of slavery in the southern states and post-civil war reconstruction. This film shows viewers remarkable stories of individual slaves, providing new perspectives on how unjust the slaves experiences were, and besides all the trouble they were facing still having to survive and shape their own lives. The British colonies in North America had an abundance of land and a scarcity of labor ended up producing money crops with the forced labor of African slaves, literally being treated as if they were machines for production.
