Censorship is the act of prohibiting any part of a book, movies or news because it doesn’t regulate under safety and may be obscene to public audiences. In the novel, “Catcher in The Rye,” J.D. Salinger analyzes the topic of alienation. Salinger implies that using such language and exploration of a characters’ sexuality will question audiences on youth and innocence of society. J.D Salinger has had most of his success being based on the book, “Catcher in The Rye,” being banned and why it was censored. Although the book was censored for many years due to sexuality and language, the unbanning of the book gave J.D. Salinger the recognition he deserved for writing such an advanced book. The Catcher in the Rye was one of the top banned books from 1961 to 1982 (Seed 449-450). Even though the book was banned over the misinterpretation of the intentions of the book, it was one of the top. The adults who misunderstood the book and didn't know much about it were the people to be the ones to ban the book in court. The metaphors in the book talk about how Holden, wants to hold on to his innocence and how he is scared to grow up. Sexuality wasn’t really a problem for the book as much as the language, but still played a role in the banning of the book. Holden calls people sex objects and is confused with his sexuality and so he expresses his desires. Prostitutes and the subject of prostitution come up on numerous occasions in the book and Holden tries to have sexual encounters with a prostitute, but his innocence and child-like attitude will make him too nervous to do anything but have a conversation with
