Many believe that the amount of education a person has determines how successful you will be and that college is the ticket to life. Also, that if you don’t go to college you won’t be able to get a decent paying job but this isn’t necessarily true. Many are also not able to pay off their college debt and this can become a big problem. To add to this, many just don’t care much about their education and don’t want to put in the effort and end up wasting time and money. College is not necessary for everyone and does not assure that you’re educated.
There are many reasons why college isn’t worth it. College is too expensive and many can’t afford it. In Brent Staples article “Why Colleges Shower Their Students With A’s”, he writes, “But the elite schools fear each other and their customers, the students, who are becoming increasingly restive about the cost of a first-tier diploma, which now exceeds $120,000” (Staples 2). Many are very fearful and stressed about how they are going to afford college is very overwhelming. The price can often put people in debt and people struggle to pay off college loans for the rest of their lives. If you don’t have a high enough paying job then you might not be able to go to college. Depending on what type of career you want to pursue you may not need college or even be able to afford it. In “College Pressures”, William Zinsser tells the struggles of students who may not have the money to afford college. Zinsser states, “They live in a brutal
We are told to “go to college” by family, media, and teachers, but we are never given an explanation on why it’s important for us to get a higher education. The importance of higher education is so we can obtain a career that can support our needs and wants. It’s also important because it gives you an advantage when trying to get a job. Employers require a higher form of education, which is necessary for our society to advance. There aren’t many jobs that accept people with a high school diploma as their highest form of education. Employers want people that know what they’re doing, and so does our society. In order for people to go into the career field they want, they need to go to college to learn everything that comes with that career.
Achieving a college degree is worth the time and effort as well as the financial struggle because there is more to be gained besides context knowledge. College is something that has dropped in importance as less and less people attend every year. These students are unsure as to whether it is worth it.Parents push their kids towards college and some even tell them not to go because of financial problems. This pressure students to make a life changing decision. This is all things that may keep a student from a secondary education that could kick-start a new and better life.
As adolescents begin their senior year, the topic of college often runs without hindrance, often causing extreme stress. As the monetary value, as well as the time spent, begins to accumulate in their minds, students often find themselves bound at the wrists figuring out a way to balance as well as afford college living. In many cases, the upcoming graduates are unsure about their career path, almost enhancing their stress in choosing a school that would cater to their needs. It is almost then they begin to ponder whether or not University/college life is for them, which is could be an extremely advantageous shot in a, for example, high achieving family. Whilst college does allow for a plethora of doors to be opened, the lack of time, effort, and money can hinder one 's ability to properly choose a university. Though school can help with the stepping stones of life, they do not entirely ensure a proper future, therefore many may opt out of school; however, with the correct actions, they may turn out extremely successful, which may not have even happened without the release of the burden of school.
The first reason that college isn’t worth it is because most successful people didn’t go to college. For example, Bill Gates didn’t go to college and he is making around 300 dollars a second (10 Famous People Who Didn’t Go to College). The richest man in the world didn’t go to college.
There I was in my car thinking about my family's past. I remember how my parents couldn't go to school. How I wanted things to change by doing something which my parents didn’t do which was to go to college. Most people can’t determine if college is actually valuable or useless. Colleges are known for being really expensive and many students will need to get tuition. But on the other side college opens chances for students to learn skills to help them in their jobs. College is worth it for some people because it opens up the chance to get more experiences and benefits in their future lives, but for others it may not be worth it since they cannot afford it and may be in debt.
As the evidence substantiates, college is worth the time and money. In this situation, worth means of high value. College has been proven to yield people a better financial future. In this time period, where jobs are hard to acquire, attempting to obtain a quality, well-paying job is nearly impossible. As displayed by the Hill, the average high school graduates salary is $35,615 per year. Meanwhile, the average college graduates yearly income is $65,482; this evidence was taken from a US Congress census; again from the The Hill. This exhibits the fact that college graduates, on average, make 48% more than high school graduates. Having a little advantage in pay is beneficiary in this time period. By going to college people are not only thinking about themselves, but for the better of their family. In the case of someone coming from a menial background, going to college can change their monetary needs. In the same way, only 260,000 people with college diplomas are working in minimum wage jobs. Around 72,000,000 or 33% of the adults in America have gone to college, proven by another US Congress Census. That means that 1 in every 277 people who attend college have a job paying minimum wage. Furthermore, a Georgetown University study has shown that 99% of the post 2008 recession jobs, have gone to college graduates. After reviewing this piece of evidence, going to college is a major bonus in the job market. A college degree of any sort can help in most leagues of study. Many employers noticed the college degree, and almost immediately hire that person. According to evidence number 15, the unemployment rate for someone who went to college is 3.8%. On the contrary, the unemployment rate for someone who only attended high school is 12.2%.
Three good reasons why college is not worth it are because of tuition costs constantly rising, the several years of debt afterwards and lastly, a job is not even a guarantee once you have your degree. Colleges provide inadequate educations and do not properly prepare students for the real world, meanwhile hiking up the cost of tuition without providing a better learning environment. Should students and families really continue to sacrifice their time and money for a sub-par education for these for-profit colleges that just make money off of them? The better solution is to step back and think about if college is actually worth
I grew up in Anaheim, California dreaming about being an astronaut, a store clerk, a Powerpuff Girl, and an actress. Unfortunately, none of those dreams ever made it past a few months before I decided I wanted to do something else. When I was in high school, I was introduced into the world of theatre. Being a part of the theatre company at my high school allowed me to explore a world that allows everyone to express their creativity. If it wasn’t for my first theatre class I would’ve never found my love of theatre and film.
The next four years of my life will determine the direction of my future. In the near future, I plan to go to college to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. With this degree I hope to become a person who has the necessary skills and knowledge to find innovative ways to solve problems. Advancements in technology revolutionize the way people interact on a day-to-day basis. Someone must be bold enough to lead teams of thinkers to view reality as it can be, instead of accepting present limitations.
My generation has had the idea of College embedded into our brains since around 5th grade; we were taught that with a College degree comes financial stability as well as success. I remember the exact year that the idea of College became much more than an illusion for me. It was my last year of middle school and the topic of what happens after high school came up. Being a Dream Act student, the idea that I would actually get the option to attend college was almost unrealistic. First of all, my family is low income and I would never want to cause financial stress on them. College is worth so much money, and I’ve heard of all the warnings when dealing with debt after graduation. Then there is the great fear of whether I would even make it in college
After high school, I believe college is the best place to explore new opportunities and become a productive citizen in a global society. College is not for everyone but it was the best choice for me. Like most eighteen year olds, I was ready to leave home and start really focusing on my goals in life. Throughout this road to academic excellence I plan to grow into a young woman that will make my parents proud. I may hit some bumps along the way, nevertheless, I will come out strong. Even though college has always been in my future Virginia State University. To be honest it was actually my last choice. I never really expected to be attending and HBCU. Since I was young, my parents have enrolled me into diverse school so an HBCU is a new experience for me. I was used to being one of the five african american kids in a class, but at VSU that’s obviously not the case. Since I've been on campus for the past two weeks I have grown to love this school and I am excited to spend these next four years here. I have already made so many connections that I hope will last a life time.
I am 25 years going on 26 years old and I thought college was not for me, when I got out of high school. As I grew older I started to realize that I was not satisfied I wanted something else, I couldn’t do things I liked because I was living pay check to paycheck always stressing about not paying bills on time. Soon after I had my son and realized that I needed to do something about my situation, I needed time to spend with him and still pay bills. I decided to go to college and I can say it was the best decision I have made it will benefit me and my son in the long run. A college education and degree can open many doors in a person’s life, and I believe that there are 3 benefits we can all relate to, it can lead to having a better financial stability, better job opportunities, and family stability.
It’s hard to say I don’t know what I want to do when I finish college. I’m suppose to have this idea of what I want to do for the rest of my life and be devoted to that career for the rest of my life. “So, what have you decided to study?” is a question I have heard from parents, teachers, grandparents, uncles, aunts, friends, co-workers, and just about everyone else that says they know me. I don’t know how I am supposed to just know what I will do for the rest of my life. Choosing ones career should be a decision based over a long period of time, and after being exposed to many different experiences. And in order to acquire the best career for yourself you must make the decision, only you know what is best for you.
Is college worth the cost? Many people believe that it is not worth it but there are a few people who say it is. College cost has gone up by so much over the years. Less and less people are deciding to go to college because of the cost and the worth. Debt is on the rise, and many people would rather just go get a job now then be in debt for most of their lives from college. College these days just is not for everyone.
Being a teacher, or a police officer, or even an astronaut requires education. Even finding a job requires education. Some people say it’s too expensive. If you go to college and get the degree, that degree gives an higher chance to get a very good job to pay off your debts. Any job or company owner would rather have someone with a college degree than someone with only a high school degree. American RadioWorks says “Today, nearly 60 percent of all jobs in the U.S. economy require higher education.” That means almost all jobs need a higher education then a high school degree. College brings so much more then just better Jobs. College brings better family, better knowledge, and better pay.
