“A true friend is the greatest of all blessings, and that which we take the least care to acquire. ”-François de La Rochefoucauld. A lot of people have at least one friend. Friends are sometimes needed in life. This is important because friendship can help people. In the novel The Perks of being a Wallflower, Stephen Chbosky proves the quote above by demonstrating that friendship is beneficial to protagonist, Charlie who gains benefit from his friendships with his friends Sam and Patrick.
Friendship is beneficial to Charlie because it helps him realize that he was molested. Charlie’s aunt Helen was close to him in his childhood before she died. Charlie only remembers the good memories with his aunt before Sam did something to help him regain his bad memories with his Aunt Helen. On page 202 it says, “Until she moved her hand under my pants and she

Before meeting Sam and Patrick, Charlie was an innocent kid who couldn't keep himself together. It was when Charlie lost his friends that he realized that he needed them to help him sustain himself. On page 139, Charlie couldn’t keep himself intact. He had just lost his friends. It says“I’ve been smoking it ever since”. Charlie started smoking drugs because he could not contain himself. After a while, Charlie got his friends back and got better. On page 154 it says”I was at a party with my friends so it really didn't matter that much. I just drank because I figured it was about time to stop smoking”. Charlie’s reconciliation with his friends helped him regain sustainability because he got his friends back. This shows that Charlie’s friendship helped Charlie sustain himself because he decided to stop smoking and get himself together. Charlie’s ability to stop smoking after getting his friends back shows that friendship helped him maintain self sustainability which proves that friendship is
Did you know that Obama has had to use the veto stamp fewer times than any other president since Garfield? (Ingraham) This statement might seem unrealistic, but many presidents have chosen not to use the veto stamp and if so only a few times! A veto is when the president rejects a bill from becoming a law. There are many steps leading up to the presidential veto it first starts out with the legislative branch who decides if the bill is good enough to be sent to the president. The president is a part of the executive branch and decides if the bill should be vetoed or not. Presidential veto relates to checks and balances in many ways, but the main way is that when the president vetoes it, the Legislative branch has the chance to make the bill a law! This is rare though because they have to give
?I?m jealous of every moment away from the work-impatient with anyone who tries to steal my time.?(165) The reason that he has no friends may be that he does not make time for them and does not treat them properly. He tries to make love to Alice and he has to pretend she is Fay for it to work. Therefore, since Charlie had friends before he received the operation and no friends after the operation, Charlie was better off before he had the operation.
Charlie was trying to change for the better, his sister-in-law not liking him reflected him in many ways as well for the fact that he had to prove to her that he was a changed man to have custody of his daughter again. He went from drinking drastically to having as little as one drink per day. Who says being a young dad was an easy task? Often Hornia questions why she wasn't able to live with her dad. As stated in the story Marion questions whether he has changed when his old friends entered his life, as they say, birds of a feather flock together. Well, we do want to know was his friends going to influence him back downhill? will he go back to his insane drinking days? In the story, it does mention he meets up with his old friends, in my opinion, Charlie is having some difficulties trying to overcome his drinking habits, although he shouldn't be judged for his past but he should be observed for his current actions.
Friendship opens our minds to different views and perspectives and change our perceptions. It has the power to change people’s views on life in a positive way. True friends will do anything to keep their friendship alive, no matter the barriers. Potok proves through the friendship of Danny and Reuven that friendship can be achieved no matter the barriers. He proves that friendship is a key value to life through his motif
First, Charlie believes that his work associate’s are his best friends. This could be proven by Keyes on page 205, “Then Frank Reilly said what did you do Charlie? Forget your key and open your door the hard way. That made me laff. They’re really my friends and they like me.”
‘Technology should improve your life… Not become your life” (Billy Cox). This is a message that the characters in Fahrenheit 451 experience throughout the course of the novel. This is the government’s representation of oppression and overthrowing society. Technology is responsible for replacing literature, intellectualism and curiosity. Also, it becomes a substitute for family, friendship and any sort of communication with others.
To escape the daily struggles and to cope with how his life is going, Charlie begins smoking outside of his friend group. His sister catches him smoking and is amazed because of how innocent he seemed. This ignorance on her behalf just shows how much Charlie is changing for the worse. After numerous times of smoking, he starts going to parties and getting high. Most readers would expect him to react different to these situations but he welcomes them and makes small notes about other people at the parties. At one of his last parties, he’s on LSD and this just brought his whole emotional well-being to the ground. Even when he’s not under the influence of drugs, he’s still disconnected from what’s going on around him. By the end of the book, Charlie is stealing liquor from his parents and drinking it excessively to escape the realities of the
Friends can help people in multiple ways, but the main way is it gives people life skills.
They introduce him to partying, drinking, and drugs. In the novel, during the New Year’s Eve party he is introduced to LSD, he states “things were worse an hour ago, and I was looking at this tree but it was a dragon and then a tree, and I remembered that one nice pretty weather day when I was part of the air” (Chbosky 94-95). Charlie already struggles a lot with anxiety and depression and sees a psychiatrist regularly. The influence of drugs by his peers especially something as strong as LSD really can affect Charlie’s mental state in a negative way. Sam illustrates what Charlie goes through when he is on LSD by saying it is “what she called “the trance.” The trance happens when you don’t focus on anything, and the whole big picture swallows and moves around you” (Chbosky 102). This just shows that Charlie is willing to go to Sam for advice and hear what she has to say about his experience. Although this is not necessarily a good thing because he is allowing her to influence how he feels on the drug. Chbosky makes a strong social critique here by showing that the influences of peer’s actions can be harmful in some cases. When it comes to Charlie, he already has a hyperactive brain and being on drugs can be more destructive than good. He soon realizes this when he says, “I figured that it was about time to stop smoking so much pot” (Chbosky 154). This is when Charlie realizes and understands that the drugs he is doing
Therefore, the power of friendship can ease some of the stress in difficult situations.
Charlie wants to make everyone believe, even himself, that he doesn’t have a problem anymore. He justifies that he only drinks one drink a day to help him overpower the temptation of alcohol. “It’s sort of stunt I set myself, It keeps the matter in proportion” (Fitzgerald 422). However, the author suggests that he may subconsciously want to resume to his past ways. Both of these characters need to deal with the problems they are consciously or subconsciously suppressing.
“And in that moment, I swear we were infinite.” (Chbosky 39) Charlie says this when he is hanging out with Sam and Patrick driving through a bridge and playing there favorite music out loud, he felt good inside everything from the outside world had escaped him and he was just there with his friends. Charlie is overall a good friend who always finds the best in people and his friends helped him to come out of a very dark place in his life.
Friendship is a concept that is very crucial to every life being that it provides one with intimacy and support. According to the developmental psychologists, relationships with peers are required in order to be normally socially developed. Patrick is a very important part of Charlie's life. He was the first person to accept Charlie and was Charlie's first friend in high school. Charlie had not had a friend since his best friend committed suicide the year before. The developmental psychologists said that relationships with peers are
After falling out with his friends because of his mistake with Mary Elizabeth, Charlie became even more depressed than he was before Sam and Patrick. He turned to smoking as a way to grieve at the loss of his friends and the loss of his previous life. Charlie becomes ever out of it. When his sister needs him to drive her to the abortion clinic, he feels important and depended on and as he reported this was the first he felt needed. This repercussion with his sister helped him
In the story, Charlie experiences being lonely in different aspects of his life. The first one that he feels this in is his family. His family consists of his parents, his brother and sister, and his aunt Helen. His parents, especially his dad, have never really been that involved or shown much interest in his life. This is shown when after he had been on LSD and was found in the snow, they never questioned if he was on drugs, they just contributed it to his prior problems of “seeing” things. His dad usually just ignored Charlie because he was different and quieter than the other kids. Charlie’s brother isn’t in the story much because he’s away at college playing football for Penn State. Charlie’s sister is in the story pretty often, but she doesn’t really talk to
