The Trouble with Gun Control We as a country have been caught up lately in the idea that we need to take away people's guns in order to make people safer. Adolf Hitler once said, “To conquer a nation, first disarm its citizens (Quotes About).” Do I really need to explain where history seems to be repeating here. What people do not seem to understand is that by trying to control guns, you are just making it easier for those who would mean to do harm to get away with it. This is especially true in states with really strict gun laws. Politicians have been recently pushing the fact that they want to heavily regulate gun laws in some hope that it will make our country a safer place. This topic is a hot debate right now as political public figures …show more content…
According to politicit.com, New Jersey comes in at second for stricter gun control laws in the U.S.A. To give some background to New Jersey state law on guns, according to FindLaw.com, “New Jersey prohibits the sale and ownership of sawed-off shotguns, silencers, and armor penetrating bullets. Additionally, New Jersey gun control laws mandate a 30-day waiting period for handguns (45 days for non-residents)” (New Jersey Gun). Now this is one of the examples that I can kind of agree that some of these are needed in the state's gun laws. Nobody needs to own armor penetrating bullets or sawed-off-shotguns because those could be seen as detrimental to public safety or cause people to become uneasy if they know somebody owns them. There is no need, however, for a 30 day waiting period for getting a handgun or a restriction on having a silencer. As one of our founding fathers Thomas Jefferson once said, “The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." (Gun Quotations) This backs up my point that if a criminal wants to either get a handgun or a silencer, the law is not going …show more content…
You would think this would mean that their crime rate index is the lowest of all of the U.S. states. If you think this, you are in for a big surprise. According to USA.com, California posted a surprising crime index rating of 1,700.60 compared to the US average crime rate index of 1,669.05. I do not even have to re-mention Vermont's crime index score because it would just put all those who believe in stricter gun laws to shame. When you hold the rank for the most strict gun laws in the USA and post a crime index higher than those with much less controlled gun laws, it just goes to show how wrong the idea of strong gun control laws is. It also goes to show how no matter how strong your gun control laws are, if a criminal wants to get their hands on a weapon, laws are not going to be the thing that is going to stop or deter
The violence in the United States is a big issue, but making more gun laws is not the answer. It is an inevitable fact that making it harder to get access to guns would only lead people to turn to black markets and more underhanded deals. In an article for the Los Angeles Times, James Q. Wilson writes, “It is virtually impossible to use new background check or waiting-period laws to prevent dangerous people from getting guns. Those that they cannot buy, they will steal or borrow” (Wilson). Dramatic changes within gun controls laws would, in itself, make more people mad and possibly lead to riots. In many people's minds, more gun control laws would mean to taking guns away. Gun control laws within themself are not a bad thing, the extent to which they are taken within a nation
Over the past couple of years, gun control has become a major issue in politics in reaction to horrific public shootings involving government buildings and even elementary school children. There have been many heated debates regarding the effectiveness and constitutionality of gun control from both sides of the political spectrum. Although some argue that gun control will lead to a decrease in crime, guns allow individuals to protect themselves when law enforcement cannot, concealed carry helps prevent crime, and the fact that guns are not responsible for crimes caused.
The topic of more gun control has recently been heavily brought up in congress not because it was on their list. It has only been brought up as a huge topic because of the recent mass shooting, such as Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Aura Theater, and The Navy Yard. The type of guns that were used in these shootings have been under fire, especially assault rifles, shotguns, and other military grade weapons.
Guns are not for civilians. I believe that guns are bad for a few different reasons. One reason is that people are killing other people with guns. My second reason is that good armed civilians are not always helpful when they have their weapons. My final reason is that people are committing suicide with guns. I believe that gun control should be issued because of all of the many deaths caused by guns and gun violence.
The United States faces many problems today, with one of the most concerning being gun control. It has affected the Nation in a tremendous way with innocent people dying. Homicide rates in America are alarming and more frequent than ever. In my opinion, the reasons why we should be more strict on gun control is because they have the ability to create chaos in general, which is the result of them being in the possession of wrong people like children and criminals.
Gun control has become a hot topic in recent times with heated debates and strong feelings
Whether it be raising a family, or getting the job you’ve wanted since you were little, the American dream is something that is different for every person. So what makes it so special that Americans strive for it, but a lot don’t actually reach it? The American Dream in itself can be hard for one to reach, but there are obstacles that make it even harder to obtain. A controversial topic for the past few years has been about Gun Control, should or shouldn’t we do it? Gun control has been shown to be a risk that isn’t worth taking. From mass shootings and an increase in crime rates, to a rise in terrorism attacks. Controlling Americans use of firearms can be lethal to the future of the U.S.
All guns have the potential to be dangerous and should be handled with care. Guns have been part of American life for as long as people can remember. For most people guns are perceived as very dangerous and harmful. However, that is not true; guns can be dangerous, but only if they are in the wrong hands. Owning a gun is right that every American should be able to take pride in having. Guns are used for self-defense, hunting, law enforcement and other uses. The right to own a gun is protected in the 2nd constitutional amendment. Therefore, banning guns from being owned or purchased is wrong and unconstitutional. Gun control in the United States should be abolished.
"A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" (Right 1). This is what is written in the second amendment of the American constitution, which is part of the bill of rights. So how can the U.S. Federal Government decide to ignore the American constitutional right and decide they can take away the guns of American citizens? The Democratic party, founded by Andrew Jackson, has changed over the years. The ideals of this party originated as the party of the people since it protected the rights of ordinary Americans. In 2016, the party has changed completely because Democratic leaders such as President Barack Obama
While achieving a balance between a law abiding citizens’ right to own guns and keeping guns away from criminals may be challenging, it is something we should all strive for. A victim’s inability to protect themselves or the one’s they love, will always be an issue with certain laws. Those laws which restrict gun ownership would essentially hinder one’s ability to protect themselves and leave them wide open for an attack. We have seen these stories in the news day after day. McDowall states, “Restrictions on carrying concealed weapons are among the most common gun control policies.” (193). When it comes to concealed carry, Mc Dowell states, “These statutes limit who may have a deadly weapon-usually a handgun- hidden on their person when outside the home.” (193). On a daily basis, you can see reports of
Many deaths and injuries often times involve a gun. Some of the worst tragedies occur because there is not enough laws against guns. More laws need to be established and no one seems to take initiative. Different gun laws need to be establish because anybody can purchase a gun, people abuse the power that comes with a gun, and too many crimes are committed with a gun involved.
You wont my guns? You can have my guns when you pry them from my cold, dead hands. The debate over if guns are too dangerous to own have ben going on for a long time and With both sides making very good points. Stricter gun control laws or outlawing guns does not end violence. The Constitution grants American’s the right to bear arms. Since the beginning of the United states,“The Land of the Free?” guns have been a big part of shaping the country. We have, and continue to use this tool for hunting, sporting, Protection of once family, and for the nation, and from if needed. Gun rights are a constitutional privilege that should not be any more regulated.
Chicago had handguns banned until June 2010 when the supreme court ended the ban in the case McDonald V.S Chicago (Debate Fact Check: Does Chicago…). The Case McDonald V.S Chicago was a landmark case for the fact it ensured that the Second amendment protected a person’s right to “keep and bear arms”. DNA info mentions that police want tougher gun laws. Stricter gun laws are not a smart idea because Criminals are criminals because they choose to not follow the laws that is the definition of a criminal opposed to an average law abiding citizen. Detroit another city with laws restricting and making it hard to own firearms has a pretty high crime rate. Detroit recorded 310 murders in 2010, 386 in 2012, 298 in 2014, and 302 in 2016 according to city data. This because of Michigan laws that seek to make people not want to get guns and have them of how hard it is to get a gun. Michigan has three very strenuous steps that are required to obtain a gun. Based on a article from the Mic network a person first needs to pass a safety questionnaire. Then they have to apply for a ten-day gun purchase permit, and then the person has up to ten days to take the gun to police. A major flaw to the ten-day permit is person fails to find a gun to purchase in the 10 days they have to start to whole process over. New York City another great example of how strict gun laws are a total flop. According to CBS2 Political Reporter Marcia Kramer the statistic that nine out of ten guns used to commit crimes were originally purchased in another state due to the strict gun laws. The amount of murders in New York City in 2010 there were 536,2012 419
“The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” says NRA vice president Wayne Lapierre on gun control. Most know that gun control is the set of laws or policies that regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, or use of firearms by civilians. These policies, in fact, don’t solve most problems as intended, but can even cause more. Guns are not the problem; putting laws on guns doesn’t resolve the fact that killers will kill regardless. The right to bear arms is a constitutional right. Taking control of guns would be extremely unconstitutional. Guns are a functional part of society. The United States should never be able to take our guns.
We have all heard of all the tragedies throughout the country regarding guns. According to the President (2013) "We know that we cannot stop every act of violence with guns, but what if we tried to stop even one?" Weapon controls in the U.S. is structured at a state level and each state has their own restrictions on gun control. In different parts of the nation, there is significantly more resistant to firearm laws. For instance, in Texas, the gun law permits individuals to carry handguns on their side like in the cowboy era. In Kansas, firearm owner is not required to have a permit to concealed weapon. In Missouri there is not required that a gun salesman to have a background check or a waiting period. However, there is a requirement to take a gun class, once you pass the class a buyer can purchase a gun then register it with the sheriff department. In California a person can petition the court to remove a firearm from a family member capable of violence.
