In every great novel or film there is an antagonist, and in some cases what people would consider a villain. Every villain has different motives for what they do and different character traits. The one thing in common with most villains is being an opposing force to a hero. In many cases, the best villains are the most complex. One example of a complex villain from both a series of films and novels is the character Hannibal Lecter. In the books you can see that Hannibal Lecter is a villain with many positive traits that are perceived negative because of the way he uses them. Some people may even say that towards the end of the series, Hannibal is more of an anti-hero than villain. Hannibal Lecter is the main character of the novels by Thomas …show more content…
It has even been said that Hannibal could have a narcissistic personality disorder or another type of social disorder. Throughout the books, films, and the TV series Hannibal sees himself as superior to almost all other characters. He finds it hard to talk with some people because he doesn't see them fit intellectually, and he toys with them because he thinks it's funny. There are very few he respects, one of the people he respects being Clarice Starling who is an FBI agent that goes to him for help in a case. In this quote you can see that Clarice was different for Hannibal compared to others when the author states, "It occurred to Dr. Lecter in the moment that with all his knowledge and intrusion, he could never entirely predict her, or own her at all. He could feed the caterpillar, he could whisper through the chrysalis; what hatched out followed its own nature and was beyond him. He wondered if she had the .45 on her leg beneath the gown. Clarice Starling smiled at him then, the cabochons caught the firelight and the monster was lost in self-congratulation at his own exquisite taste and cunning." The quote shows that even though Hannibal believes he is superior to most, there will be at least person to perplex him and have him …show more content…
Hannibal is an extremely intelligent character. It's mentioned in the books and throughout the films/TV series that Hannibal could go through tests that show intelligence scores with no struggle at all and scored perfectly. Hannibal uses his intelligence to get himself out of situations where he would be arrested, and uses his intelligence to manipulate people. In The Red Dragon, the author states this, "Lecter is so lucid, so perceptive; he's trained in psychiatry... and he's a mass murderer." Despite being to intelligent and perceptive, having degrees in thing — he is a mass murderer. Hannibal is a cannibalistic serial killer, and how he manages it is because of his intelligence. Hannibal's level of intelligence makes him interesting, but makes his own character disinterested in others. Hannibal has used his intelligence to escape from prison, manipulate people in authority, and lead a life of cannibalism behind closed doors for years with no one noticing. He managed to live his life as a psychiatrist while secretly killing people and feeding them to his associates for a good amount of time before being apprehended by Will Graham. Hannibal is capable of reading people very easily, pin pointing their weaknesses and anything important to know about them within one short glance. Overall, Hannibal is one of the most intelligent villain characters there

Jeffrey Dahmer, also commonly known as the Milwaukee Cannibal, is one of America’s most notorious serial killers. In the span of nearly 15 years, between the years 1978 and 1991, it is estimated that Dahmer was responsible for the death of fifteen to seventeen young men (Radford University). As his nickname suggests Dahmer was known for drugging his victims, then raping them, then disembodying them, and if the mood fit him, cooking and eating his victims. Dahmer’s unique case resulted in him being psychologically analyzed and diagnosed by at least seven different psychologists during his trial (Palermo & Bogaerts, 2014). This paper seeks to explore the diagnostics given to Jeffery Dahmer and prove, through the use of available information, their accuracy.
Hannibal sat at his desk waiting for Mason to arrive for his appointment. He wasn't surprised Mason was typically late. Normally Hannibal disapproved of such rudeness, but not with Mason, Mason and giving him the most fun he had had in years. He was different than Hannibal and almost every way blunt, chaotic, and egotistical. Hannibal considered himself very fortunate that he was Mason psychologist and not someone who would try to waste all of Mason's potential.
Russell Crowe once said, “I like villains because there’s something so attractive about a committed person-they have a plan, an ideology, no matter how twisted. They’re motivated.” The villain’s commitment to follow through with their evil plan is what shapes the story’s plot, which is why they play a very important role in literature. In short stories, villains that are highly motivated and grim creates the best plot that is short enough to keep the reader’s attention but long enough to be considered a well-developed story. The villains Montresor from Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado,” and Madame Loisel from Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace,” are both greatly villainous in their own ways, but General Zaroff from Richard Connell’s
Using the diagnostic structure of the DSM-V, Lecter displays characteristics of both Post-traumatic Stress Disorder with dissociative symptoms and Anti-Social Personality Disorder. To understand this diagnosis further, we must first examine the psychological history and symptoms throughout Lecter’s life. Post-traumatic Stress Disorder is defined as a clinical syndrome characterized by intrusive memories, emotional avoidance, and heightened psychological arousal following exposure to a traumatic event (APA). In the novel Hannibal Rising, Lecter witnessed and engaged in the death and cannibalization of his sister, Mischa Lecter. Through this experience, Lecter is shown to frequently recall this event throughout the narrative. For example, during Lecter’s time in Florence, Italy, he experienced a traumatic nightmare regarding his involvement of Mischa demise. This dream is peculiar within the story, as it is the only time where Lecter is described as being genuinely fearful for his life. In addition to Lecter’s traumatic memories of Mischa’s demise, is his avoidance of certain stimuli. Specifically, during Lecter’s time in Florence, he attended the Atrocious Torture Instruments show to observe people and to study their mannerisms. It was at this event that Lecter unintentionally discovers a skeleton in a starvation cage. Upon viewing this demonstration, Lecter instantaneously makes an exit. Through this reaction, it is reasonable to assume that Hannibal
In the Political Satire, Animal Farm, George Orwell used animals to tell a story of Russian history. Not only were connections placed in Stalinist Russia but also on other historical people and events. One character that stood out was Moses, the tame raven, because he represented church and religion, a messenger system, and the Sons of Liberty.
Cassius feels threatened by Caesars power. Cassius does not think that Caesar deserves all this power. Cassius does not like the fact that Caesar does not like him. “yond Cassius has a lean and hungry look;/ he thinks too much, such men are dangerous.” (I.II.284) He thinks that Caesar’s temper is very dangerous. Casca is also jealous of Caesar. Casca feels disgusted by Caesar’s manipulation of the commoners. He says that it is “mere foolery.”(I.II.327) All of the conspirators are very jealous of Caesar’s power and they all want to see him fall.“Jealousy is a fear of
When looking at the presentation of villainy in the books Macbeth and Jekyll and Hyde, there is a range of aspects to consider, for example; what makes someone a villain? Does one have to possess certain traits; has their villainous personality been ever present? Perhaps, can evilness be brought out or thrust upon a person…
Jeffrey Dahmer’s personality and criminality is extremely complicated to understand, however the theory that seems to fit the infamous serial killer best is psychoanalytic theory. The main focus around the theory is that the different parts of one’s personality conflict with another as a result of some early life trauma or deprivation. There are three different parts of the personality in the theory the id, ego, and superego. Psychoanalytic theory offers explanations based on the ideas of Freudian psychology and its theory of personality, which can be used to explain.
He was a serial killer as well. He was sadistic, which means he drove pleasure from inflicting pain upon others. He was also narcissistic which means he had an excessive interest in his own physical appearance. He killed around 30 people, or at least that’s what he confessed to. Another serial killer is Jeffrey Dahmer, who was a cannibal. When they found him, he was in a state of dissociation. When he is in a state of dissociation, he can forget things and there is a lack of connection in his thoughts, according to the article titled Dissociation and Dissociative
At the start of the episode, he has never killed anybody but by the end, he does kill someone. Even though it was justified, he is traumatized by it because he sees killing as killing. It’s during this that he may start to see himself going toward the dark side. This is further established during the scene where Hannibal offers food to Will, which was implied to the audience that it contained human meat. Just like that, it implies that Hannibal is slowly trying to convert Will onto his evil side.
I every super hero movie there is always a protagonist and antagonist, or also considered hero and villain. There's many super hero but people never seem to give villain a thought. There are many villains but my personal favorite is the Joker from Batman: Dark Knight Rises. The Joker has a dark and creepy background which makes him more interesting and what makes him a villain. He's tricky and sets up traps for people such at Batman. The Joker has a criminal record of robbing banks, killing innocent civilians, and stealing cars and armored trucks.
In conducting this research, I will examine multiple outlooks on the physical and mental aspects of Hannibal Lecter. In doing so, I hope to resolve to many questions dealing with the underwhelming reason of what drives Hannibal. Critically analyzing the film “Silence of the Lambs” and “Hannibal” to depict certain personality traits, pinpoint certain activities or exchanges, and interactions will help provide a better and deeper understanding of what motivates Hannibal. Getting a better understanding of his early life by reading Red Dragon will provide crucial information of possible activities that triggered an outrage at such an early age, especially when being born into a war torn country during World War II. Attempting to get a physiological
“The Veldt”, written by Ray Bradbury, is about a family that lives in a home that does everything for them. If they forget to tie their shoe, the house ties the shoe for them. If they need a room to be swept, the house sweeps the room. “The Veldt,” was composed in the 1950’s, around the time where technology invaded personal lives and relationships. Technology captures people’s attention, which makes them unconscious about their surroundings. This can be considered an invasion because it is separating oneself from their community and the people around them. Ray Bradbury gives many examples of technology going awry, and controlling the minds of others. He also shows us the outcome of that and how it messes up the wondrous brain. The message
