On August 6th and 9th of 1945, two fatal bombs were dropped by the U.S military in Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the island of Japan. These bombs were called the atomic and hydrogen bombs. More than 200,000 innocent people were killed when the bombs were dropped. Bodies were scorched, babies orphaned, house’s destroyed… total obliteration. The justification of the bombs being dropped, was to end World War 2. President Truman, believed that the bomb would bring an end to the war, and that the Japanese would know that the U.S meant buisness (D1). But. the bombing of Hiroshima was murder, thousands of people were killed. Innocent people. This isn’t ethical in any sense. The bomb has affected the people of Hiroshima for years and years after the dropping. …show more content…
While I do understand that the bomb had some purpose being dropped, these documents show so little regard for the death they had caused, it was sad. Lester Bernstein explained to the New York Times on October 24th, 1965, “on Truman’s orders, the first atomic bomb ever in war exploded over Hiroshima. For Americans, in uniform those who waited for them to com ehome, outrageous as this might appear from the moral heights of hindsight, it was a sunburst of deliverance (d5).” The “burst of deliverance” for the soldiers, could not compare to the hardship and suffering the people of Hiroshima were about to endure. While the soldiers could go home to their families, citizens of Hiroshima may not have had a family, much less a home, to come back to. The fact that the soldiers couldn’t recognize that, is terrifying. In Secretary of War Henry Stimson it was stated, “The decision to use the atomic bomb was a decision that brought death to over a hundred thousand Japanese… But this deliberate premedicated destruction was our least abhorrent alternative (d3).” By saying this, Stimson makes it feel like the bombing of Hiroshima, the death of 80,000 citizens in a second, was not a big deal. That it was okay, when it most certainly
Atomic bombs are so powerful that it immediately causes a widespread killing of the people close to the explosion. The aftermath of the explosions are horrific to where there were bodies floating down the stream (Document F). “The use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in out war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender” (Document B). This means that the Japanese thought these weapons were exceedingly brutal and would wipe out everything, so they weren’t in favor of the bombs. They were already defeated from the power of these bombs and they couldn’t do anything after the explosions, and this was just not necessary. After the attacks, Hiroshima was no longer a city but a burned-over prairie. To the east and west everything was flattened (Document D). Entire cities were wiped out and this caused shock and sadness to approach into
The fatal atomic bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the end of World War II are written down in history books today. This is because they had a drastic story behind them that changed the world and the lives of many civilians. The United States decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II had both positive and negative results.
On August 6, 1945, the United states have dropped the atomic bomb on Japan city of Hiroshima and three days after The United States have dropped the second bomb on Japan city of Nagasaki to end World War II. The United States should not have dropped the atomic bombs on Japan to end World War II because it was inhumane, unnecessary, and brutal.
On August 6, 1945, the U.S. dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. To this day there is controversy on whether the U.S. should have risked the lives of hundreds of thousands of people to win the second world war. The U.S. Should have considered other options before dropping the bomb on Hiroshima. There were many alternative actions that could have taken place instead of dropping the bomb, but President Truman decided that using it was the best way to get the Japanese to surrender. If he would have chosen differently, the world would be a different place today.
Document B. The second reason for the dropping bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was not justified because they didn’t need to bomb Japan. Truman bombed Japan because he had his own feelings about being the first to drop the bomb. Truman also wanted to adapt to an ethical standard that had been common to barbarians in the Dark Ages. The evidence shows how the dropping of the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was not justified because Japan would still have to surrender even if the bombs were not
On August 6th, 1945 the United States military dropped the first atomic bomb as an act of war on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. 3 days later, the second and last to date, atomic bomb was dropped onto Nagasaki, Japan. Under the direction of President Harry Truman, the atomic bombs were dropped in response to the disregarded ultimatum
Most of the Japanese would rather die than to come to a peace agreement and that was why we should have dropped the bomb. The bomb was the end of it all and was absolutely necessary because of the Japanese belief in bushido. They created the use of kamikazes in order to kill us and would have used even more if we did not drop the bomb. Furthermore, in Document 9 we can see the horrors that were faced because of this bomb. The horrors were faced because we needed to save our troops and get them out of the Pacific. There was a reason behind the bomb and the lives that were lost. The reason was to save our own American lives and to make sure that this war was over. The bomb was completely necessary no matter what happened to the people in Japan. The last argument that will be discussed is that it was against God’s will and was not moral. (Doc 12). This is the most ridiculous thing that I have seen people say yet because during this time Japanese were dropping planes on us. They killed many of our people but no one says anything about the lives of the soldiers that were saved. No one says anything about the fact that we were attacked in Pearl Harbor were off-guard soldiers were stationed. Just like the bomb it killed people that did not have a chance to defend and were killed. If we were put through this attack and put through the everyday life of a soldier we would want the bomb to be dropped as well. This is not a question of whether something is moral or not, it is a question on whether or not it helped us save lives. We did save lives with these bombs. Up to a million American lives were saved with this bomb (Doc
After the Japanese dropped the bomb on Pearl Harbor, the United States took serious offense to it. The Americans dropped the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki because of them dropping the bomb on Pearl Harbor. America dropped the bomb because President Harry Truman commanded that if the Japanese made any attack on us, we would attack them. This bomb badly affected Japan. At least 140,000 Japanese people died, including 20,000 soldiers by December of 1945. At least 90% of the deceased were killed within two weeks of the bomb being dropped. 92% of 76,000 buildings were destroyed. (“Hiroshima Committee”)
On August 6, 1945, the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, then on August 9, 1945, the second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. Japan surrendered on August 14, 1945, ending World War II. It is estimated that 200,000 lives were taken in both of the bombings. Prior to these bombings, during the Potsdam Declaration, Truman advised Japan that they would face “prompt and utter destruction” if they did not surrender. ( Miller Center, 2016 ) 1. ( The White House, 2016 ) 2
Their was about like 500-800 babies were examined in their houses. (aasc.ucla.edu/cab/index.html) We think the atomic bomb was a horrible disision to drop on so many people lives that some of them was inocent. The main reason why they dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima is because, it involved 7 planes but the only one that they remember is the Enola Gay becuase that is the mans name that dropped it . If that wouldnt have happen the world would be a different place today.
Dropping the atomic bomb on Japan was wrong. The United States needed a way to end the war, but killing innocent civilians is not morally right. When we dropped the atomic bomb on Japan, ninety-five percent of the people who died were civilians (Kauffman, Jill). President Truman said the bomb targeted military cities, but that does not make up for the fact that he was wrong (Ragone). Admiral William Leahy, Truman’s Chief, said it perfectly when he said “…wars cannot be won by destroying women and children” (Kauffman, Jill). Bringing President Harrison Truman to power was one of the biggest issues. Truman was only Vice President for three months before being called to duty (Ragone). When asked about his job as Vice President he said “I don’t
“In 1957, with the arms race in full swing, the Department of Defense had decided it was just a matter of time before an airplane transporting an atomic bomb would crash on American soil, unleashing a radioactive disaster the likes of which the world had never seem.” On August 6, 1945, the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, killing 20,000 soldiers and 70,000 – 126,000 civilians. On August 9, 1945, the second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, killing 39,000 – 80,000. A total of 129,000 – 226,000 people were killed in combining both bomb droppings. Dropping both atomic bombs on Japan was necessary to end the war because the military needed to end the war, the Japanese were given fair warnings
In 1945, two atomic bombs were dropped over Japan on Hiroshima and Nagasaki which resulted in thousands of civilian deaths and a detrimental impact on the environment.
On the 6th November 1945, a United States bomber flies over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The only cargo aboard that B-29 bomber was an atomic bomb waiting on its target. At 8.15am the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, taking 140,000 lives with it. Most of the 140,000 died instantly, horrifyingly the rest of the innocent civilians that were not in direct contact with the bomb died painful deaths in the four months following. They died from radiation sickness and different types of cancers.
