Pit Bulls are among the top percentage of dog bites across the nation, but it partly due to the misrepresentation. Most handlers just see a similarity to a Pit Bull’s physical appearance and then the dog is classified as such. The media always misrepresents and wrongly accuses Pit Bulls, they are always quick to name the pit bull breed as the attacking dog. The government also does the same thing if a dog has similarities to a Pit Bull, then it is automatically classified as a Pit Bull even if it’s not correct. They don’t care about

“An unneutered male pit bull is 2.6 times more likely to bite then a neutered male. In addition, male pit bulls are 6.2 times more likely to bite then female pit bills.” In a study evaluating canine temperament, 82% of dogs received a passing score, 86.8% of those dogs where American pit bull terrier (1800PetMeds.com Feb. 2012). There are ways to avoid incidents when in contact with these animals. When approached by a pit bull always remain calm, approach the dog slowly from the side not from the back. Do not provoke the dog - always ask the owners to pet the dog first. If an aggressive dog approaches you do not panic, give the dog firm commands like sit, stay, and easy, then back away slowly. When owning a pit bull socialize the dog with people and other animals, get them familiar with animals and people including children. Isolated dogs can become vicious and dangerous so be cautious when in contact with a not so friendly dog. (Skloot, R Aug 2007 Prevention Vol.59, Issue 8 Pgs. 196-198)
The Tennessee Code Annotated discusses civil liability to an injury caused by dogs in § 44-8-413. This statute begins with defining a dog owner’s duty by claiming that “the owner of a dog has a duty to keep that dog under reasonable control at all times, and to keep that dog from running at large.” Tenn. Code Ann. § 44-8-413(a)(1) (2007 & Supp. 2016). An owner is a person that at the time the incident occurs, is responsible and has authority over the dog. Id. § 44-8-413(e)(1). Running at
Bite reports also sometimes show a false story. For example in 2005 a vet was trying to find source of bleeding inside a pit bulls mouth, and then when the vet reached in the sedated dog’s mouth, the dog had a seizure, and its jaws clenched down on the vets hand breaking the skin (Enos). Bite records show that the incident occurred, but none of the details behind the bite were revealed. Also if we banned all pit bulls, and replaced them with any other breed like a German shepard or a Rottweiler, they could do the same damage to others that a pitbull
Irritating Dog: A person can irritate a dog by teasing, tormenting or abusing it. These three terms are provided, but not defined in The Ohio dog bite statute R.C 955.28 Subsection (B). Ohio Rev. Code Ann. §955.28 (West, WestlawNext
Many bites could be avoided by the education of dog owner no matter the breed. Like mentioned earlier many people leave their dog with their kids unattended. This is a horrible idea even if your child is good with dogs. Kid often don’t see the warning dogs give until it is too late Also dogs are a very easy target because they can't tell their side of the
On 05/29/16 at 8:00pm, I was dispatched to 2142 Balford Square East on injury-possible dangers or vicious dog and owner surrender. I arrived at the house and spoke to dog owner Delane Murrell Jr. Mr. Murrell stated that his son was standing in the kitchen when their dog came in the house from the back yard and attacked his son. Mr. Murrell wrote out a statement of facts in regards to the incident. Mr. Murrell also stated that he wanted to surrender the dog. I took pictures of the injuries to Qimari Brown. Qimari has puncture wounds to his right thigh and to the right side of back. Mr. Murrell was unable to show proof of dog license. Mr. Murrell was issued violations for failure to license and failure to control a dangerous dog. Mr.
Six months ago, almost to the day, my best friend and her new puppy were attacked. She was dog sitting her grandmother’s Mastiff, whom at the time had no previous violent history. She kept the Mastiff and her puppy in separate rooms in order to make sure there were no problems, but that wasn’t enough. One day, out of nowhere, the Mastiff broke down the door separating them and went on a full-fledged attack toward the puppy. My friend tried to make it out of the door of the house, but to no avail. The Mastiff bit her by the arm and dragged her to the ground forcing the puppy
Pit bulls are a breed of dog that are notoriously labeled as being dangerous and as having a propensity to attack without warning. Statistics gathered from 2005 through 2015 found that Pit bulls accounted for 64.4 percent, or 232, of the 360 deaths of Americans suffered due to dog bite injuries, while only making up about 6.6 percent of the total U.S. dog population. Due to these statistics, there are many who defend enacting statutes that specifically point to incidents involving these dogs needing strict liability to protect third parties.
These dogs do not deserve the treatment the are being given. In 1996 the odds of dying in a dog attack was one in 11,534,087 (Delise 100). The latest statics of dying in a dog attack was in 2005 and it was one in 147,717 (Britt). The only reason the odds are up is the increase in population. Another reason is the amount of damage that happens, Dr. Sandi Sawchuk said “...If someone did the same research on Chihuahuas, they would probably find that there are more bites, but they’re less reported due to insignificant damage” (Pisani). Dr. James Serpell and friends did that exact test and found that smaller dogs tend to show more aggression towards humans. Ninety-three percent of Pit Bulls are being euthanized before even being put up for adoption,
Take a Bite Out of Breed-Specific Legislation Imagine you are a proud dog owner, having adopted a puppy from a local rescue not knowing what breed your new “bundle of joy” is. As your puppy turns into an adult, it becomes obvious that your dog is a mix or full-bred
Introduction: The pitbull dog breed is a descendant of the bulldog breed, originating in England as they used these dogs as bullbait for sport (Medlin, 2006). It was when England outlawed the sport of matching bulls and dogs for entertainment that smaller dogs began to be bred to fight each
Using the death based approach, 66 out of 76 of the Pit bull type were purebreds and the rest were crossbreeds, 17 out of 27 were purebreed German Shepherd dogs, 7 out of 8 were purebreed Saint Bernards, and 1 out of 5 were Labrador Retrievers (Stacks et al. 838). The rest of the totals were cross breeds. Using the dog-based approach, 98 out of 118 were purebred Pit bull-type, 24 out of 41 were German Shepherd, and 7 out of 8 were purebreed Saint Bernard (Stacks et al. 838). Out of all these studies, they found out that 24% were deaths involved with unrestrained dogs off the owner's property, 58% were unrestrained dogs on the owner's property, and 17% involved restrained dogs on the owner's property, and 1% involved a restrained dog off the owner's property (838). This however can be justified, most of these dogs bite for a reason just like people may lash out on other people if they are mad or angry.
Conclusion So, now you have an arsenal of the most important tools to keep your dog from becoming aggressive and attacking other people and other dogs. Getting attacked by a dog is a really scary event because their bites can cause serious injuries or death. It is important to always protect yourself by carrying a dog repellent spray on your keychain for when an unexpected event happens.
