In recent Denver news, red-light cameras have been at the forefront for controversial discussion and in the limelight over the last few days as legislature attempts to ban the use of all red light cameras throughout the state for the second time, however, Governor Hickenlooper will most likely veto the bill. (Bunch) Red-light cameras at major intersections should remain active and are important to help reduce the number of speeders, allow police officers to attend to other public safety issues, aide those injured or involved in an accident, and help reduce the number of fatal accidents. Although many drivers are all too familiar with red-light cameras, they did not just appear over night. The first red-light camera bill in United States history was passed in New York City, in 1993, after quite a few years of testing. (“Intervention Fact Sheets”) After the bill in New York was passed with success, many other states …show more content…
Finally, accidents and fatalities have been known to have been reduced at intersections where red light cameras are in place. Reduction in life altering accidents and fatalities should be a main point as to why it is absolutely critical that there should be red light cameras. According to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis office of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “Total red-light running crash fatalities decreased 22% from 2007 to 2011, as the number of communities with red-light safety cameras increased 135%.” (“Red-Light Running Dangers”) When the conversation of whether to have red light cameras, or not to have red light cameras arises, human fatalities should without a doubt be a top consideration. Especially when a study performed during 2011 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that red light cameras had lowered red light running deaths by 24%. (“Red-Light Running
The individuals with wide diversity have different requirements. They are facing many difficulties due to this management system. 2 Among them, the Red Light camera is one most controversial issue of the local and state governments. The controversy of the red light camera between local and state government was started from early 2000’s and is still continuing. Similarly, the committee of Texas voted 8 out of 22 approving a bill to ban the authorization of Red Light’s contract. Likewise, the major controversial topic in Austin and Dallas is about the Red light camera. In addition, the main purpose of keeping Red Light camera was to prevent the possible road accident. But the Red Light camera didn’t provide the strong witness in identifying the drivers. Therefore, the State government didn’t find it

There is so much crime which occurs in our society today, which it is very difficult to put an end to it. But there is a thing which is common among these crimes which are the criminals. According to the article, "Police body Cams: Solution or scam? Nwanevu the author has stated many questions to which he gathers the responses from three panels who is Mariame Kaba a member of the Chicago antipolice violence organization, David Fleck a vice president and he is also a major manufacturer of the police body cameras, and Connor Boyack who is a president of Utah 's Liberates Institute. This article mentions the popular magazine such as Time magazine, this magazine reports that over a quarter of the country 's police departments are already testing or actively using cameras, including the NYPD and the LAPD (Nwanevu, 2015). Also the author Nwanevu states that The Obama administration has called for the federal funding to support the deployment of as many as 50,000 devices to state and local law enforcement agencies. The administration 's reasoning captures the perspective of most camera supporters. According to the status the usage by police officers will help sustain trust between law enforcement agencies and the communities they interact with (Nwanevu, 2015). Reformers have suggested that the video could have gone a long way towards resolving the ambiguities of the Michael Brown case where eyewitnesses had given conflicting stories and also the death of Eric Garner according to
Cameras on school buses to enforce stop arm violations sound like an amazing solution to the ongoing problem of too many drivers behind vehicles running the red flashing lights and the stop sign when children are loading and unloading the bus. However, will this purposed objective iron out the issue at hand. To see if the cameras on the school bus are reaching the goal they were sit to accomplish. There must be an evaluation done on a comparison of the numbers of violations caught before and after the cameras were installed, has there been a decreased in the number of motorist running a stopped school bus, and if the cost of the cameras is being met over the citations that are being issued.
Before the creation of these cameras, complaints about police officers were numerous. By using these cameras, studies have shown that they enhance officers’ behaviors and have also helped reduce citizen complaints. “They found that the ‘officers wearing the cameras had 87.5 percent fewer incidents of use of force and 59 percent fewer complaints than the officers not wearing the cameras,’ the report states”
Over the last few years there has been much controversy leading up to the need for law enforcement officers to wear body cameras. This is not only for citizens but also for the officers’ protection. With so much debate regarding police brutality and excessive force body cameras are quickly on the rise. New technology is giving police on a state and federal level a new opportunity to cut back on some of the allegations and negativity we have seen in the last few years. On the other hand it is giving citizens all over the country the safety they should feel when being approached by law enforcement. Our technology has improved significantly over the years and this seems to be something that will benefit everyone.
2 The issue of Red Light Cameras has been an ongoing issue for a long time now. It has gotten to the point where our state government has jumped in. Individuals in our community have worked hard to ban the red light cameras; while the government has done the opposite. In the article, “Effort to ban red light cameras stopped in Texas House” states that effort to ban red light cameras in Texas died after a House lawmaker called a point of order- which is a procedural tactic used to kill bills. While on the other hand Rep. Joe Pickett, believes Texas should have the ability to determine whether each city should keep the red light camera program. Only four months into 2017 many bills have been filed to limit or disallow the use of red light cameras in many cities. Individuals of communities have tried to compromise with higher ups with the exemptions of tollways and police officers only using cameras. Many people in cities are tired of going to war with a camera and losing. Many cities such like Dallas are not moving in the direction of eliminating Red Light Cameras, majority of the community support the thought of having red light cameras at important congested intersections. 3 According to the article, “ Hate red-light cameras? Texas Lawmakers will try to ban them – again”, supports of red light cameras said “ the devices make the streets safer” , it was also stated that statistics show that since red light cameras have been present the number of child deaths have decreased. If the problem is people constantly running red lights then maybe state government should make it a priority to enforce that there is more police patrol around. Instead of state government expressing why they believe we should not ban red light cameras, they do not and allow local citizens to feel the need to argue or debate with state government. The biggest problem state government
Each year numerous lives are lost due to careless and irrational driving. The disregard for safe driving has been a predicament to the United States of America for years. Many years Police have relied heavily on speed cameras, breathalyzer tests and heavy fines as a deterrent against unlawful drivers. Over the years fatality rates have increased, so the Department of Transportation and Highway Safety has composed a series of safe driving campaigns. On many occasions the Transportation Department informs and advises the public about the importance of responsible driving. They propagate safe driving through the various channels of the media and
It will also be helpful to modify the traffic lights to make them more visible. Upgraded speed cameras will control most people that speed by taking a picture of their license plate and vehicle and giving them a moving violation ticket. Control officers will catch any drivers who are not following traffic laws and will give them a ticket as well. Safety programs in vehicles will help people to do things more safely such as making a call or sending a message. An all-red clearance light will cause all the lights on the intersection to stay red for at least five seconds to ensure that vehicles on all sides are stopped. Making the traffic lights in Surprise more visible whether it be making the lights larger, or switching out the bulbs with stronger, more opaque lights, will also help reduce the number of traffic accidents. The cost for the speed cameras, control officers, dynamic message boards, and implementing an all-red clearance interval have been calculated, however the cost of safety programs in vehicles and modifying current traffic lights are to be determined.
Method Summary (important info only) - Students (150) were shown a video of a multiple-car accident due to one vehicle not stopping at a stop sign and then making a right turn into the main traffic. The video is less than one minute long and the multiple-car accident happens in a period of four seconds. Afterwards, the students are given a ten item questionnaire with a diagram labeling the scene. Questions asked are either about how fast the car was going when it ran the stop sign or how fast the car was going when it turned right. Seventy-five students received the stop sign question and seventy-five received the turned right question, the last question was neutral. A follow-up question shortly after asked if the students saw a stop sign.
With the increasing emergence of traffic cameras around the nation, there has emerged a debate about whether the cameras are effectively functioning to keep drivers safe or whether they are just another source of revenue for cites. Facts have proven that the purpose for the traffic cameras is simply generating more money for the cities. The estimated amount of money that the city of Denver will be making in 2011 from these cameras (Kaminsky)—excluding the ones recently put up—a grand estimation total of seven million dollars… “According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety more than 550 communities in the United States use red light cameras.” (Urie) Research shows how the cameras are not improving safety for drivers, and for
I think speed cameras are good because they discourage speeders all over the world. Also, it makes the streets safer by not having so many impatient drivers. From the article, “Proponents
Another growing problem, that for years has been the major headline for traffic accidents that could have very well been avoided
Red light running is a serious issue in the United States. According to T. Walden and B. Bochner (2011), it is estimated these violations result in over 100,000 accidents and 1,000 fatalities each year. The economic impact is assessed to be over $14 billion dollars annually (“Effectiveness of Red Light Cameras-Texas Statewide Evaluation,” p. 30). Typical costs include items such as property damage, medical expenses, response expenditures, etc. The monetary costs are significant, but the loss of life is incalculable. N. Elminity and E. Radwan (2008) state that drivers who run red lights are the primary cause of high-speed angular collisions at intersections (“Issues Related to Red-Light Camera Enforcement Systems,” p. 32). RLCs are an attempt to increase safety and reduce risk at problematic intersections in order to mitigate these costs.
Do speed cameras save lives, or are they a nuisances? Ways of measuring vehicle speeds has been around for centuries to prevent road accidents and keep people using the roads safely. The idea of speed cameras has been around since the early 20th century, the company Gastometer BV which was founded by Maurice Gatsonides (a Dutch rally driver, born February 14 1911) invented the first speed camera to measure and monitor his speed on the track as so to better and improve his driving and to help him improve his lap time as he was a rally driver. The first speed measuring device was introduced in the 1960s which used film cameras to take the law breakers pictures and from there we’ve seen the speed measuring devices flourish, the first gatso (speed cameras official name) in the UK was installed in 1992 at Twickenham Bridge in surrey. Now in society there are all kinds of different speed cameras from mobile (Mini Gatso, Radar guns, Laser guns, DS2) to fixed devices (Gatso, Truvelo, SPECS, Vector, HADECS 3) in total there are over 13 types of speed cameras
