Why Is Langston Hughes Considered To Be An Esteemed Poet?

I found it interesting that Langston Hughes was criticised for being too simplistic, whilst today he is regarded as an esteemed poet. Also, your statement about how he wrote poems that were both “complex enough to be appreciated by the white elite and poems that were written to be read by those without any formal literacy background” was intriguing, and I admire Hughes ability to do this difficult task. Another fact that interested me was how from 1923-1924 he traveled as a merchant seaman to Europe and Africa. In the section about his education, I am curious to know who the generous patron was that funded his education. I read “Harlem” and was amazed at how Hughes was able to write a poem that was both short and simple, while still being profound and deep. Furthermore, how you analyzed that it was a B-D rhyme pattern enhanced my reading of the poem. Also, I thought it was interesting how you discussed how Johnson used imagery to show happiness and youth. Finding out if she felt the way the person in the poem did would be fascinating. Countee Cullen not only went to Harvard, but was popular with both black and white audiences. This stood out to me, and I am curious to know how he accomplished this. “His works later in life were criticised for being out of touch with the reality of black life” (Meyer 944). Why did critics think this? What did they mean by being out of touch? My first thought of “For A Lady I Know” was that it was a short. Then, I realized in this short poem was a complex theme interwoven into just a few powerful lines. The white woman thinks that even in heaven she will be served by “poor black cherubs” (Cullen 4). Even after death, the discriminating woman sees herself as being a higher class, as did most white persons. This kind of thinking is destructive, and Cullen acknowledges
