Myranda Rodriguez Ms. McDonald Block 4 7 November 2017 The life of Gatsby In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby the overall theme of wealth shows that just because money has value it can never buy people's happiness or love that’s real. In the beginning of the book, the upper class is perceived as judgemental and self-important. Nick’s father always told him, “Whenever you feel like criticising anyone… just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had”( 1). When people have money, it makes their lives a lot easier because they aren’t having a hard time trying to make a living. Money can degenerate someone's standards because they are besotted with the idea of finally having money because …show more content…
He wasn’t pleased with just his wife which caused him to have a mistress on the side, meaning he wasn't loyal to his wife even if he loved her. As he says when he’s in an argument with Gatsby, “And what's more, I love Daisy too. Once in awhile I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back, and in my heart I love her all the time”(132). Everyone knew that she wasnt enough for him because Ms.Baker told Nick, “‘I thought everybody knew’... ‘Tom’s got some woman in new york’”(15). He cheated on his wife Daisy with Myrtle and he bought her stuff so then she wouldn’t get bored with him and leave. Tom was a very particular man when it came to his women because if they weren’t beautiful and didn’t show interest all the time to him he wouldn’t go for them. His mistress in NYC also had a lover, but she kept her relationship with Tom a secret because her lover already treated her bad. So she went to Tom because he would buy her anything just to keep her interested in him. He was like a player for instance, he was never satisfied so he had lot’s of things to keep him entertained. Tom moves often, showing he can't stay put in one place because he would get bored so he always had to be doing something, even if it was him stealing another man’s
The novel first shows signs of Tom’s affair when Jordan Baker, a friend of Daisy, spills the news to Nick. Jordan states, “Why- she said hesitantly, “Tom’s got some women in New York” (19). This news is somehow conceivable as it fits right in with Tom’s character. As if Tom’s affair wasn’t enough, he also treats his mistress with formidable rancor. Tom makes fun of Myrtle, the mistress and Wilson’s wife, at their New York apartment, by saying, “Ask Myrtle … She’ll give you a letter of introduction, won’t you, Myrtle?”(37).
He gives her everything because Myrtle cherishes these things and just accepts what Tom gives her. This is because Myrtle doesn’t continuously ask or isn’t as stuck up as Daisy is because Daisy grew up thinking everything was easy and that she could get what she wants so having Myrtle is easy for him but he still truly loves her even though he goes behind her back and cheats with random women and its somewhat funny but depressing that he doesn’t exactly use his body language to show he loves her when in reality it’s very abusive and tense throughout the book as Daisy exposes the fact that he broke her finger; showing how unhealthy relationship is a good
He is an example of old money, and because he is so rich he decides that he can break all the rules and do whatever he pleases, like cheating on his wife. "'Why -' she said slowly, 'Tom's got some woman in New York.'" (19). (wanting, more than anything else, to buy and own lots of nice things) has gotten to Tom's head and he believes just because he has so much wealth he can buy happiness with anything that he pleases.
And he does crazy thing with it. Like he buys unnecessary things that are a waste of spending. It is like someone buying a private jet but someone will not do that because it is pretty expensive thing to buy. Therefore, at the moment it is not great idea to do. Tom is rich and thinks he can buy whatever she wants whenever he wants.
During the 1920s, many people thought money was the key to happiness. They thought money could only have a positive impact on their lives and keep them content. However, these people neglected to realize the negative effects that wealth would have on both themselves and the large impact that it has on society. Amidst their joy, they were unable to see that and wealth does more harm than it does good. F.Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, illustrates his perspective on the 1920s. This story takes place on Long Island in the Summer of 1922 and follows the life of narrator Nick Carraway and the many interesting encounters he has with his friends, such as Jay Gatsby as well as Tom and Daisy Buchanan. Fitzgerald is able to convey these negative
‘The Great Gatsby’ novel by F. Scott Fitzgeralds is a novel that has symbolic life lessons that have shaped my values and realities of life. This novel is about Nick Carraway, the narrator, that tells the story of Jay Gatsby a millionaire purposing the American Dream at the cost of losing himself. A key quote in the novel demonstrated the reality of wealth doesn’t define a person. But consumes them was illustrated when Carraway first saw Gatsby. “I could have sworn he was
Tom struggled with his self-identity, especially with his greed. The text states, “He had a wife as miserly as himself; they were so miserly that they even conspired to cheat each other”(Irving 1). Tom and his wife were both very greedy. They would hide food, clothes, money, and valuables from each other. They were supposed to be in a partnership, but they were equally greedy.
He too abandons his morals; illegally earning the money that he believes will win back the heart of his lost love Daisy. When they had a love affair long ago, she wouldn't marry him because of his financial standing. The details of his business are sketchy, when asked he usually ignores the question. Tom though, after some investigating finds the true nature of his profession.
To began, Money was always a need for people in the nineteen-twenties, it didn't matter if it was new money or old money riches rule the nineteen-twenties. In the novel the “The Great Gatsby” by Scott Fitzgerald, riches made a change in everything. Money made changes between the characters, Daisy and Gatsby. After Gatsby gives a detailed display of his wealth and shows off his expensive shirts, Daisy breaks down in tears and says “I never seen such beautiful shirts before. ”(Fitzgerald 92).
Is your life revolved around how much money you have, what you can buy, or what you look like? In The Great Gatsby, the lives of the characters are revolved around the importance of money and the materials they own. Tom and Daisy Buchanan are two very important people that let their money control their lives, such as Daisy marrying Tom solely for is money so that she will be provided for her entire life. Gatsby is a prime example of all the wrong reasons of wanting to accomplish the American dream. He wanted to impress Daisy, so he lied and cheated his way to the top in order to prove to her that he was worth it, and now that he has money, he allowed it to take control of him and his true purpose. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald allows the
Money was an end to gatsby. He doesn’t strive to become wealthy because of greed he strives because he wants his lady daisy back . Its like money only matters to Gatsby because he thinks it’ll help him get daisy back. Money not being the key to happiness doesn’t apply to gatsby Albert Daisy brings happiness to Gatsby if it isn’t her he doesn’t want it it doesn’t make him happy . Nothing makes Gatsby happy but Daisy.
As human beings, what takes priority in life? Is it money? Money often drives people’s behavior. People don’t realize that it’s not necessary to be wealthy to enjoy life and live happily. Many of the characters portrayed in The Great Gatsby, displayed their desire for money throughout the book. Each character had a different outlook on money, but they each had something in common, they all wanted to acquire more. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby, the characters’ and community’s obsession, perception, and attitude toward money was prevalent.
Daisy married Tom and claimed to be in love with him, I mean, she has a daughter with him! I think this is where it all becomes a bit confusing. Daisy sees Gatsby and is drawn to him, despite her marital status. Tom is heartbroken when he finds out that Daisy is having an affair. He says, “...
Fitzgerald uses the broken relationship between Gatsby and Daisy which consequently creates the delusional mindset of Gatsby himself. Therefore as a result challenges the social perceptions of the importance of wealth. This is stated as given the context of New York in 1920s where world war I ended, This was a time period where glamorous parties and conspicuous celebration started to emerge. As the story takes place in a time period where a big leisure class started appear, wealth and consumption was highly prominent. This was clearly exemplified through the character of Gatsby.
Being famous and having money is every kid’s dream. Throwing money around like it grows there is an endless amount is everyone's dream. As many may be the solution to numerous issues, it does not solve the problems of the heart. Since many people do not understand this concept, it is the worst pain, the aching of the heart. This lesson is what Jay Gatsby should learn, how his whole life he thought he could win over a girl with all his money and expensive shirts. In The Great Gatsby by Scott F. Fitzgerald, diction displays how money cannot buy happiness and is not the solution of the heart.
