The 1940s was a time of war and technology. Some of the technologies were used for the war, for example the atomic bomb, and the Willy Jeep. The Second World War led to other wars, like the Cold War, and the Korean War. During the War or during the 1940s FDR was president. FDR tried to be neutral, but that didn’t happen. We sent over 12.2M soldiers in WW2 and 407,316 died, 671,278 were wounded(nationalww2museum). Even though other decades have been shocked that our safety can be endangered, events of the 1940s were the beginning of that realization. In December 7, 1941 Japan bombs Pearl Harbor. The bombing left 2,403 dead and 1,178 were wounded, three battleships West Virginia, the Arizona, and the California were sunk, plus the Oklahoma lay …show more content…
The battle of Midway was a turning point in the Pacific. Midway started on June 3rd and ended on June 6th 1942. Admiral Chester Nimitz, Commander of the Pacific Fleet, called in all available carriers and could come up with only three: Enterprise and the Hornet, commanded by Raymond Spruance, also the Yorktown(Great Events). Those carriers and other ships made up the Nimitz defence force. Nimitz also ordered that Midway be reinforced with 120 planes, antiaircraft guns, and 3,632 defenders, also that the three carriers were Northeast of Midway(Great Events). The consequences of Midway was Japan lost four heavy carriers, and later lost the war. The U.S. dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki brought an end to World War 2. The development of the bomb began in 1939, also the research program began in October 1939, the project was called the …show more content…
First is the Nuclear Reactor, built in 1942 by the guy named Enrico Fermi was the world’s first nuclear reactor for producing power, Fermi called it an “atomic pile”also it was built in the University of Chicago(Smithsonian Timeline of Inventions). Four years later the microwave oven was introduced, but home microwaves didn’t appear until 1955. John Eckert and John Mauchly came up with the computer in 1946 at the University at Pennsylvania(Smithsonian Timeline of Inventions). It was called the ENICA, that stood for Electronic, Numerical, Integrator, and Calculator, it filled an entire room. During the war the U.S Army wanted an all-terrain recon vehicle,so the Willy Jeep was created. Army specs wanted the vehicle had to have four-wheel drive, a wheelbase not more than 80 inches, tread not more than 47 inches, ground clearance of at least 6.25 inches, a payload of 600 pounds, cooling system that would prevent engine overheating at sustained low speeds, and a vehicle weight of about 1,300 pounds(PAhistory). The jeep was built in Pennsylvania and made by a guy named Willys, owned a company called Willys-Overland. During the war automakers built about 650,000 jeeps during WW2, and entered the service in the late
Franklin D. Roosevelt took office in November 1940 in the middle of the Great Depression. The stock market was in chaos, the world around us was in turmoil: Adolph Hitler was controlling Germany, France falling into the powers of Germany, Axis power almost had complete control of Europe. Many strongly opposed about not going to war but Roosevelt was trying to encourage the joining of the United States into World War 2. His speech “Four Freedoms” was giving 2 years after World War 2 had started, his significance in this announcement was
December 7, 1941, was on of the worst attacks ever on the United States. Out of that day, 2,403 soldiers were killed in action, 1,178 were wounded in action. Through the misjudgments of numerous U.S. armed forces personnel, the Japanese were able to carry out this terrible attack, which crippled the United States’ Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
By the end of 1941 Japan had control of most of the Pacific theater. It was not until after the attack on Pearl Harbor that the United States formally declared war on the Axis Powers. By the beginning of 1942, the United States Navy, switched from being in a defensive position to an offensive position and took the fight to the Japanese military in the Pacific. The Battle of Midway is considered the turning point in the Pacific Theater during WWII. However, the Battle of Midway may not have happened as it did if it were not for the men who tirelessly worked to break the Japanese JN-25 code. The ability to decipher the encrypted Japanese messages gave the United States Navy the upper hand in the Pacific theater and by the end of the war the Japanese
December 7, 1941 was one of America’s darkest days. This was the day of the famous pearl harbor bombing. This attack came from the Japanese attacking the American Naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack had been in the planning for many years to attack and weaken the United States Naval force. Japan wanted to do this to gain more superiority in the Atlantic and to grow their ties with European nations. In this paper I will talk about the people, the planning, the attack, and the aftermath of the Pearl Harbor bombing.
December 7, 1941, was one of the worst attacks on the United States in U.S. history. Of that day 2,403 soldiers were killed in action, 1,178 were wounded in action. Numerous U.S. armed forces personnel were misjudged, which allowed the Japanese to carry out this terrible attack. Not only did the Japanese hit the U.S. where they knew it would hurt the most, but it crippled the United States’ entire Pacific Fleet.
On December 7th, 1941 Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan. On this horrific day over 2,400 Americans were killed by the bombs that the Japanese had dropped. A month preliminary to the attack, Japan sent a plenipotentiary to Washington to arrange the nation’s expansions in Asia. Although if the United States didn’t accept this aggression, Japan was ready to launch a surprise attack. President Roosevelt launched bombs to the Philippines between the Japanese and Dutch oil fields, before they had sent the plenipotentiary. The bombing of Pearl Harbor was over seven hours long, they were 353 Japanese fighter planes, torpedo planes launched bomb. They were a bombing blitz that destroyed 188 U.S. aircraft, had sunken 4 U.S. Navy battleships, and killed more than 2400 Americans with an additional 1,100 injured.
On December 7th, 1941 “the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.” Many were killed in the attack and some of our naval fleet sunk because of the torpedo’s. On September 11th, 2001 a deadly terrorist attack occurred causing the fall of the twin
"Midway thrust the warlords back on their heels, caused their ambitious plans..........to be canceled, and forced on them an unexpected, unwelcome, defensive role". -Samuel Elliot Morison, the United States Navy's official historian of World War II, on the Battle of Midway in June 1942. The danger of Japanese power in the Pacific lingered over the heads of the Americans and endangered the safety of their homeland in the years from 1903 to 1942. That power lasted until the Japanese made the mistake of attacking the island of Midway in the second great carrier battle of the war. At 4:30 in the morning on June 4, 1942, the Japanese attacked the U.S. naval base at Midway in an attempt to destroy their aircraft carriers that escaped Pearl
The first attack against the U.S. done by the Japanese was the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor just before 8 a.m., it was devastating. The Japanese fighter planes destroyed around 20 naval ships and eight of them were some of the United State’s biggest battleships. The Japanese didn’t just destroy vessels, they also managed to destroy around 300 airplanes. The amount of American soldier’s lives lost was heart-rending, there were over 2,000 Soldiers and Sailors lost from the American fleet. There were also more than 1,000 wounded or critically injured on that horrifying day. The day of the Pearl Harbor attacks became known as “a date which will live in infamy”, and this day was only the beginning. This was only the midpoint of Japan’s attacks, the second half was the Bataan Death March.
The date of the battle of midway was June 3,1942 to June 7,1942 the battle lasted a total of 4 days and resulted in thousand of casualties on each side. The island of midway is a small island in the middle of the pacific ocean that was an American Naval base. The officers in charge of the American side were Chester W. Nimitz, Frank Jack Fletcher, and Raymond Spruance. The Japanese were Isoroku Yamamoto, Nobutake Kondo, and Chuichi Nagumo. The number of American troops at midway was in the thousands with the Japanese following with around the same amount of troops.
Two thousand four hundred and three Americans were killed and one thousand one hundred and seventy eight were wounded on the early morning of December 7, 1941; when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor (Pearl Harbor Statistics 1). The dropping of the atomic bomb was a reasonable reaction to the atrocities, including the bombing of Pearl Harbor, committed by Japan to many countries. A man named Marine Corporal E.C Nightingale was on the USS Arizona when the Japanese attacked. “The bodies of the dead were thick, and badly burned men were heading for the quarterdeck, only to fall apparently dead or badly wounded. The Major and I went between No. 3 and No. 4 turret to the starboard side and found Lieutenant Commander Fuqua ordering the men over the side and assisting the wounded. Charred bodies were everywhere” (Eyewhitness to History 1). Not only did the Japanese leave the beaches and people of Hawaii in ruins, they have also taken many POWs, especially during WWII, and treated them
The majority of the history of the United States during the 1940’s was plagued by World War II. However, before the U.S. entered the war, the first antibiotic penicillin was successfully used which revolutionized the medical field and WWII. Also, the U.S. Congress approved the first peacetime draft for the Army. On November 5, 1940, Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected president for his third term. This was the first time in U.S. history that a president had been elected for three terms.
December 7 , 1941 It was just another beautiful Sunday morning in America , some Americans woke up to praise the lord and others went out for a run and others still asleep after a long Saturday , but Americans didn’t know what was coming . On this day Japan decided to attack Pearl Harbor . Japan coming in blasting and destroying everything see while America is asleep . Japan launched roughly 200 planes on pearl harbor. The Americans didn’t expect none of this especially on a Sunday morning. The attack shocked the American public , as most of the attention was focused on Europe and Hitlers two year ,two front of conquest. The Japanese managed to destroy nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight enormous battleships, and more than 300 airplanes. More than 2,000 Americans soldiers and sailors died in the attack, and another 1,000 were wounded . Japan initial success ,it failed to deliver the knockout punch on the U.S pacific fleet that it hoped for . The day after Pearl Harbor ,December 8, president Franklin Roosevelt asked congress for a declaration of war. He quoted “no matter now long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion , the American people in their righteous might will win through
Midway turned the tides of the war against Japan. It ended the string of uninterrupted Japanese victories and rid of the Japanese supposed “invincibility” (Zapotoczny para 4). The battle allowed the US and the allies to go on the offensive and start their island hopping campaign. After Midway, there were operations in Guadalcanal and The Solomon islands (Zapotoczny para 5). Japanese industry would take a great deal of time to replace its losses of 4 of its total 6 fleet carriers, 300+ aircraft, and 3,000+ troops.
On the 6th November 1945, a United States bomber flies over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The only cargo aboard that B-29 bomber was an atomic bomb waiting on its target. At 8.15am the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, taking 140,000 lives with it. Most of the 140,000 died instantly, horrifyingly the rest of the innocent civilians that were not in direct contact with the bomb died painful deaths in the four months following. They died from radiation sickness and different types of cancers.
