Why Is Safety So Important In The 1940s

Franklin D. Roosevelt took office in November 1940 in the middle of the Great Depression. The stock market was in chaos, the world around us was in turmoil: Adolph Hitler was controlling Germany, France falling into the powers of Germany, Axis power almost had complete control of Europe. Many strongly opposed about not going to war but Roosevelt was trying to encourage the joining of the United States into World War 2. December 7, 1941, was on of the worst attacks ever on the United States. Out of that day, 2,403 soldiers were killed in action, 1,178 were wounded in action. Through the misjudgments of numerous U.S. armed forces personnel, the Japanese were able to carry out this terrible attack, which crippled the United States’ Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

By the end of 1941 Japan had control of most of the Pacific theater. It was not until after the attack on Pearl Harbor that the United States formally declared war on the Axis Powers. By the beginning of 1942, the United States Navy, switched from being in a defensive position to an offensive position and took the fight to the Japanese military in the Pacific. The Battle of Midway is considered the turning point in the Pacific Theater during WWII. However, the Battle of Midway may not have happened as it did if it were not for the men who tirelessly worked to break the Japanese JN-25 code. The attack had been in the planning for many years to attack and weaken the United States Naval force. A month preliminary to the attack, Japan sent a plenipotentiary to Washington to arrange the nation’s expansions in Asia. Although if the United States didn’t accept this aggression, Japan was ready to launch a surprise attack. President Roosevelt launched bombs to the Philippines between the Japanese and Dutch oil fields, before they had sent the plenipotentiary. The bombing of Pearl Harbor was over seven hours long, they were 353 Japanese fighter planes, torpedo planes launched bomb. They were a bombing blitz that destroyed 188 U.S. aircraft, had sunken 4 U.S. Navy battleships, and killed more than 2400 Americans with an additional 1,100 injured.

The first attack against the U.S. done by the Japanese was the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor just before 8 a.m., it was devastating. The Japanese fighter planes destroyed around 20 naval ships and eight of them were some of the United State’s biggest battleships. The Japanese didn’t just destroy vessels, they also managed to destroy around 300 airplanes. The amount of American soldier’s lives lost was heart-rending, there were over 2,000 Soldiers and Sailors lost from the American fleet. There were also more than 1,000 wounded or critically injured on that horrifying day. The day of the Pearl Harbor attacks became known as “a date which will live in infamy”, and this day was only the beginning. This was only the midpoint of Japan’s attacks, the second half was the Bataan Death March.

The date of the battle of midway was June 3,1942 to June 7,1942 the battle lasted a total of 4 days and resulted in thousand of casualties on each side. The island of midway is a small island in the middle of the pacific ocean that was an American Naval base. The officers in charge of the American side were Chester W. Nimitz, Frank Jack Fletcher, and Raymond Spruance. The Japanese were Isoroku Yamamoto, Nobutake Kondo, and Chuichi Nagumo. The number of American troops at midway was in the thousands with the Japanese following with around the same amount of troops.

The majority of the history of the United States during the 1940’s was plagued by World War II. However, before the U.S. entered the war, the first antibiotic penicillin was successfully used which revolutionized the medical field and WWII. Also, the U.S. Congress approved the first peacetime draft for the Army. On November 5, 1940, Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected president for his third term. This was the first time in U.S. history that a president had been elected for three terms.

December 7 , 1941 It was just another beautiful Sunday morning in America , some Americans woke up to praise the lord and others went out for a run and others still asleep after a long Saturday , but Americans didn’t know what was coming . On this day Japan decided to attack Pearl Harbor . Japan coming in blasting and destroying everything see while America is asleep . Japan launched roughly 200 planes on pearl harbor. The Americans didn’t expect none of this especially on a Sunday morning. The attack shocked the American public , as most of the attention was focused on Europe and Hitlers two year ,two front of conquest. The Japanese managed to destroy nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight enormous battleships, and more than 300 airplanes. More than 2,000 Americans soldiers and sailors died in the attack, and another 1,000 were wounded . Midway turned the tides of the war against Japan. It ended the string of uninterrupted Japanese victories and rid of the Japanese supposed “invincibility” (Zapotoczny para 4). The battle allowed the US and the allies to go on the offensive and start their island hopping campaign. After Midway, there were operations in Guadalcanal and The Solomon islands (Zapotoczny para 5). Japanese industry would take a great deal of time to replace its losses of 4 of its total 6 fleet carriers, 300+ aircraft, and 3,000+ troops.

On the 6th November 1945, a United States bomber flies over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The only cargo aboard that B-29 bomber was an atomic bomb waiting on its target. At 8.15am the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, taking 140,000 lives with it. Most of the 140,000 died instantly, horrifyingly the rest of the innocent civilians that were not in direct contact with the bomb died painful deaths in the four months following. They died from radiation sickness and different types of cancers.
