The first important theme that I found in the Preface is how Sam Patch did not have a linear career that would have driven to most biographies, his stories were told episodically not in one large picture. The second important theme I found is that Sam Patch was an ordinary man for twenty-seven years and famous for two, but the crucial years were those that were anonymous. The Patches family was not very important family and did not write any memoirs. Though for Sam Patch this helps explain why Sam Patch become a good factory operative, a daring falls jumper and a young drunken man. The third important theme that I found is that Sam Patch had disappeared after leaping off the Hudson River and when he returned, Sam was drunker than ever and became
Sam Wood is the protagonist in the story because the story starts off with him driving around Wells, and he was the one who discovered Mr. Mantoli's body. On page two, it says, "He slipped the car into gear and moved it away from the curb with the professional smoothness of an expert driver." This quote shows how Sam is an expert driver. Another quote on page thirty nine, "Sam reached up and removed his uniform cap ashamed that he had forgotten to do so until now. I'm terribly sorry to have to bring you this news." This quote describes how Sam is a sensitive person internally. In addition, Sam Wood hates to be called Sam and rather be called Mr. Wood. Sam has been a police officer for three years, (pg.2) and is a night
Samuel Adams the son of a successful brewer and merchant was an impatient man, but he had had an incredible ability to organize and arouse people he was also excellent at writing, planning, and speaking. Sam started to dislike the British, at a young age, because he thought the
The protagonists are: Sam Meeker and Samuel Roberts, and the difference are that Sam is aggressive and serious; Samuel is polite and successful. Sam is very aggressive with his father by having a lot of discussions and not showing respect to his father. Sam is very serious because in the novel he never laughed for nothing and he never hot happy for something. Samuel Roberts was very polite because he always treated Nathaniel, Anne, Susannah, and Master Beacon with politeness. Samuel is very successful because when he wanted to be a shoemaker he could all thanks to Master Beacon, another reason why Samuel is very very successful is because when he wanted Susannah to love him she actually did loved
The main character, Jurgis Rudkus, went through an implausible number of extreme changes in the period of time the story takes place. He morphs from a pure-hearted family man, to an alcoholic tramp, a beggar, a criminal, a player in machine politics, and finally a sober, hard-core member of the Socialist Party. The other characters are hardly worth mentioning. Readers really don't care much about them because they are so under-developed.
The scottsboro boys were a group of young black boys on a train. Then they got into a fight with a couple white boys on the train and threw them off . Next two young white woman that were also riding the train said they raped them and sent the boys were sent to court. The central ideas of justice develop throughout the book by when the boys are first put on trial to when the boys are released or died.
Sammy, deemed to be the protagonist of the story, is nothing short of the typical nineteen year old, full of insecurity and self doubt, working an average job at a local supermarket. He’s desperate to break out of hometown, desperate to leave behind the people like Stokesie and Lengel, who he perceives to be just some “scared pigs in a chute”, but struggles to find an escape route. That is, until he encounters Queenie, a girl who lives a life Sammy can only dream of. Queenie resembles everything Sammy wants to be. She is a natural leader, hence the nickname “Queenie” awarded to her by Sammy. She’s also proud, and confident. She doesn’t care what anyone thinks of her and loves herself without apology. So when Queenie offers Sammy the opportunity to transform himself into the person he only dreamed of being; a rebellious, confident and fearless spirit with little regard for anyone else, Sammy jumps at it. As a result, Sammy makes a rash decision to quit, in hopes of following Queenie to her sophisticated world outside of the A&P supermarket. Sammy’s rash decision to quit was an attempt to escape, live a new and exciting life, but falls short when the girls leave him behind and reality slaps him in the
A person does not really understand someone until he or she walks in his or her shoes. Scout learns through encounters with several people. The first person’s shoes that Scout steps in is Miss Caroline’s. When Scout first meet Miss Caroline, she thought of her new teacher as terse and not understanding. The first event that made Scout think this is when Miss Caroline prohibited her to read with her father any longer. Miss Caroline talk her to tell Atticus to stop teaching her to read because she wants Scout to learn to read in school with a fresh mind. Another time that fueled Scouts perception of Miss Caroline is when she tried to explain to Miss Caroline why Walter Cunningham would not take the money to buy lunch. Miss Caroline was getting
Updike presents the story through the point of view of Sammy, a nineteen year old working at an A&P dealing with the “sheeple” of everyday life. Updike keeps Sammy’s language informal, and puts in several pauses to keep him sounding more natural, such as when he describes seeing Queenie’s bathing suit: “She had on a kind of dirty-pink - beige maybe, I don’t know - bathing suit….what got me, the straps were down.” (Approaching Literature 553) Because of Sammy’s first person perspective, it presents to the reader Sammy as his own independent character, separate from Updike.
Award-winning writer, director, and producer Shonda Rhimes has contributed her talents in the area of the arts to the steam community. Her father was a university administrator, and her mother was a college professor who earned who doctorates. Growing up Rhimes was academically an overachiever she received her BA from Dartmouth College in English Literature and Creative Writing. Another theme heavily shown throughout the book is people are defined by the choices they make. Ben left his little sister Sissy to die even though he may have been able to save her, because he left her therefore he now vows to not run from danger/things that scare him. On top of that, Cassie promised Sammy that she would find him, and because she made that promise she will stop at nothing to be with him again.
Coming of age is an important theme which means the time a person becomes an adult. Sam came of age because, he realizes that his mother would never change, that she will never be like everyone else she will
One character named Hector, or Zero, is a friend of Stanley in the camp that didn't know how to read or write before Stanley taught him. Later in the story, Zero explains how his mother left him when he was very young, and ever since, he hasn't been able to learn how to read or write. He continues telling Stanley of how he lived on his own, without any guardians. Stanley Yelnats, another character went from a bullied kid because of his looks, to someone who made strong bonds and trusts with new friends. Stanley is strong, and would take any challenge to save his friends. This is shown when Stanley and Zero ran from the camp, and tried to get to a source of water on a mountain. Zero passes out, and Stanley "took hold of Zero's forearms and pulled him upright... He stood up, lifting Zero's worn-out body off the ground." Stanley later finds water, and quickly fed Zero the water. This shows how much Stanley cares about his friends, and how strong he is to save them. To sum up, a lot of the characters' backstories are very interesting, and explains a lot in the story. This is one reason why I believe you should read the book Holes.
Scott is short, smart and pretty witty, he’s essentially the narrator of the book. He has an older brother and a soon to be born baby brother whom he’s writing a high school “survival guide” of sorts to. Throughout the book we follow this book lover through is first year at J.P. Zenger High. Also, he’s a red head (learned at the very end).
A&P, a short story by John Updike, would best be analyzed by using the school of New Criticism and analyzing the journey Sammy, the narrator, experiences throughout the story. The school of New Criticism believes that the work’s overall meaning depends solely on the text in front of the reader. This is the primary way that students are taught to analyze literature in high school, or early in college. Using this school, there are many different elements to evaluate or interpret; including theme, allusion, and point of view. When analyzing the hero’s journey, a reader should look at seven characteristics. By looking at these seven characteristics of the story, the reader will be able to see into the mind of narrator and see what he/she is going through emotionally and physically. The point of using these two techniques to analyze this story is to gain insight into the writers’ and characters’ minds and see what drives them to do what they do.
Transition -- Finally Supporting point 3--Sammy quickly judges Queenie to be of a higher social class based solely on her voice. Quote- He imagines a cocktail party at her house, suggesting the “men in ice-cream coats and bow ties” are drinking drinks “the color of water with olives and sprigs of mint” (826). Explain/relate quote to point-- When he relates a party scene from his own home, he imagines people drinking malt liquor rather than martinis. Concluding sentence --Sammy childishly makes impulsive judgments about everyone he sees, never attempting to look beneath the surface. 2 Topic Sentence -- Sammy also exhibits disrespect throughout the story. Supporting point 1 -- He shows little respect for age or
