The American Revolution is a historical event that led to who we are today as an independent country. Back in the mid 1700s, the French and Indian War broke out and ended in the year of 1763. The British are in a massive debt that would harm their economy if not fixed. To fix this, the British has set taxes for the colonists to help repay their debt as a fee for their protection. However, the British collected the tax in such a way that it would be unlawful. They would force the colonists to pay taxes that would disbenefit them. The oppressive acts of Britain such as forcing unfair taxes upon the colonies and using their strengths against them is the reason why it is justified for the colonists to revolt against Britain. The Stamp Act is a meaningless tax that taxes people without any benefits or consents of the people. It taxes on every printed paper and strips away the money of the colonies which made it arduous for their life. On Document 10, by the words of John Adams, he said that the Stamp Act is unconstitutional and that no man should be subject to any tax to which he has not given his own consent. The unfairness of the taxation without representation caused many frustration and resentments. In addition, British proposed Tea Act which is an act where British sets a tax on tea. The tea act’s purpose was not to raise revenue from the colonies, but to help the East India Company to deliver the tea to the British to sell them. The tea was sold in such low price that it threatens the tea made by the colonies. Since tea was so popular, a tax on tea has a huge affect on the colonies. The new British tea overwhelms the colonies. The colonies reacted by rebelling and dumping the tea into the river which we know it as the Boston Tea Party. For example, through King George’s outrage from the Boston Tea Party, he passed the Intolerable Acts which included some of the most ridiculous laws. One law of the Intolerable Act is that it shuts down the Boston Harbor because the colonists refused to pay for the damaged tea. Another law is the Quartering Act which allow British commanders to house soldiers in vacant private houses and building. The Intolerable Act placed Boston under martial law, meaning it is ruled by military forces. This act intrudes people’s privacy, allows soldiers to step on private property without volition of the owners, and let soldiers to rule the people by force which violated the laws we have today. Another example of British’s use of violent force is when an outbreak occurred in Boston which is called the Boston Massacre. On the cold afternoon of March 5, 1770, a fist fight broke out over jobs in the city of Boston. The British soldiers are taking away people’s job because of the Intolerable Act. It started out as a small argument between the citizens and the redcoats, but it escalated as it broke into a fight leaving five armless civilian shot dead by the redcoats.
