The American Revolution is a historical event that led to who we are today as an independent country. Back in the mid 1700s, the French and Indian War broke out and ended in the year of 1763. The British are in a massive debt that would harm their economy if not fixed. To fix this, the British has set taxes for the colonists to help repay their debt as a fee for their protection. However, the British collected the tax in such a way that it would be unlawful. They would force the colonists to pay taxes that would disbenefit them. The oppressive acts of Britain such as forcing unfair taxes upon the colonies and using their strengths against them is the reason why it is justified for the colonists to revolt against Britain. The Stamp Act is a meaningless tax that taxes people without any benefits or consents of the people. It taxes on every printed paper and strips away the money of the colonies which made it arduous for their life. On Document 10, by the words of John Adams, he said that the Stamp Act is unconstitutional and that no man should be subject to any tax to which he has not given his own consent. The unfairness of the taxation without representation caused many frustration and resentments. In addition, British proposed Tea Act which is an act where British sets a tax on tea. The tea act’s purpose was not to raise revenue from the colonies, but to help the East India Company to deliver the tea to the British to sell them. The tea was sold in such low price that it threatens the tea made by the colonies. Since tea was so popular, a tax on tea has a huge affect on the colonies. The new British tea overwhelms the colonies. The colonies reacted by rebelling and dumping the tea into the river which we know it as the Boston Tea Party. Lastly, the British proposed the Townshend Acts which harmed the colonies even more through their series of …show more content…
For example, through King George’s outrage from the Boston Tea Party, he passed the Intolerable Acts which included some of the most ridiculous laws. One law of the Intolerable Act is that it shuts down the Boston Harbor because the colonists refused to pay for the damaged tea. Another law is the Quartering Act which allow British commanders to house soldiers in vacant private houses and building. The Intolerable Act placed Boston under martial law, meaning it is ruled by military forces. This act intrudes people’s privacy, allows soldiers to step on private property without volition of the owners, and let soldiers to rule the people by force which violated the laws we have today. Another example of British’s use of violent force is when an outbreak occurred in Boston which is called the Boston Massacre. On the cold afternoon of March 5, 1770, a fist fight broke out over jobs in the city of Boston. The British soldiers are taking away people’s job because of the Intolerable Act. It started out as a small argument between the citizens and the redcoats, but it escalated as it broke into a fight leaving five armless civilian shot dead by the redcoats. The propaganda were widely spread because of Paul Revere, a member of Son of Liberty. The defenseless civilians were not armed with guns and only threw snowballs and sticks to the redcoats to as a
The American Revolutionary war began in-part because of economic struggles England faced after securing safety for it’s colonies during the Seven Years War. England needed to increase their taxation on the colonists after the war to pay off its war debts. Prior to these taxes, the colonies were wholly content while under the wing of the British Empire. Not only because the protection the British provided, but also because of their deep reverence for the Motherland. Colonists were angered by with Parliament due to their lack of acknowledgement towards colonists rights and opinions. Colonists stood together in a defiant motion towards liberation from England’s tyrannous acts of lawless duplicity. Before British government was able to fully
In 1767, the Townshend Acts were imposed (the tax on glass, paper and tea). One of the most significant events mentioned was the Tea Act. To explicate, the Tea Act granted the British East India Company Tea a monopoly on tea sales in the colonies. As a result of the outburst against the Tea Act, King George declared the Boston Port Act which closed the Boston Harbor and forced the colonies to pay for the tea lost. Finally, the colonies decided to go to war against Britain.
The stamp act was a British tax enacted on the colonies by the parliament in 1765. The act taxed all paper items from important legal documents to playing cards and the stamp prices would vary by a the type and content of paper. People would have to pay the stamp distributor for their paper which was so crucial to the British government that counterfeiting stamps was punishable by death. The act was passed to pay for the French- Indian war. And although the intentions were good there was an uproar of mixed reactions all over America. The general public opposed the act and acted in violent matters and even burned one stamp distributors house down. The richer public would say that they were against those "barbaric ways" and would petition the government instead , but their outcries were ignored. The stamp collector's also
The Sugar Act On April 5, 1764, the parliament of Great Britain passed a law that set a tax on molasses and sugar imported into the colonies as a means of increasing the profit earned from the colonists. The purposes of the sugar act were to decrease the tax on molasses from 6 to 3 pence per gallon, but the new tax was collected by the British military, establish admiralty courts for tax violators, stop the colonist from trading with non-British suppliers, and reduce the amount of people that avoided paying taxes, increasing the tax on other foreign goods. The colonist did not like the sugar act because there were experiencing financial difficulties at the time and it was taxation without representation. The English’s policy of Salutary Neglect
We can protest or we can also go on strike or you can also picket. The Boston Tea Party is a good one because the people thought the tax law was an unjust law because they had to pay tax when buying tea and so they protested. Some people have protested the drinking law age because you are able to drive, vote, and serve in the army but they could not drink. The last one is the Patriot Act because it was breaking other laws that were already in place.
Before the American Revolution in 1775 the British were in major dept so they decided to tax the colonists. This made the colonist very furious so they started to protest against the Britains like dumping 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor, loyalists were being tarred and feathered, and many more horrible things. The colonists were justified in waging war and breaking away from the Britains for many reasons for example the Britain's enforced many taxes like the Stamp Act, tea act, and the Townshend Act. The colonists were also justified in breaking away from the British because the British were very tyrant towards the colonist like the quartering act, the intolerable act, and the Boston Massacre.
On April 27, 1773, the British Parliament passed the Tea Act, which was supposed to, as History’s article, “Tea Act,” states, “was not to raise revenue from the colonies but to bail out the floundering East India Company, a key actor in the British economy.” The colonists viewed the Act as another example of the British Parliament abusing taxation. To further express the colonists’ hatred towards the Tea Act, John Green explains in his YouTube video, “Taxes & Smuggling - Prelude to Revolution: Crash Course US History #6,” that “Some colonists were upset that cheap tea would cut into the profits of smugglers and established tea merchants, but most were just angry on principle.” At the time, tea was just as equally an important beverage to both the colonists and the British, and having the British tax the tea showed
The boston massacre started by the collisions were throwing snowballs and sticks at the british soldier thats was doing his job. And he told them to get away from him and the house he was guarding and they did not and the kept throwing snowball at him and then a another soldier came out to help he cause he heard the colonist yelling at the soldier and he told them to get back and thing got out of hand and the solder bit the colonist in the face with the back of his gun and then it got worn more british soldier came out and start to shoot the collisions cause they could
Power; everyone wants it, however it is limited to many. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, a woman from a extremely low class family, Mayella Ewell, convicted Tom Robinson, a well respected African- American man, of rape. In this time period, woman still had an insufficient amount of power. The color of someone's skin judged how they were to be treated, and class would continue to be an issue during the 1930’s. Mayella appeared to have power, after winning the court case, however, how much power did she actually have? The only thing that gave Mayella an advantage over Tom Robinson was the color of her skin, which is essentially considered as power. Several times throughout the book, there are hints that Mayella Ewell lacks
The american colonists justify in the waging war by the unfair rights, lack of land , and violation of the english rights. The american revolution was very unique because it was the first time they fought for their independence. In the american colonies there was lots of grievances against the king. The colonists knew what they wanted and knew what they were fighting for. The American colonists justified in Waging War and breaking away from Britain because the unfair rights the lack of land and the violation of English rights.
About a decade before the American Revolution happened in 1775, there were lots of tension building up between the colonists and the British. The colonists did not like being under British rule and control because they liked freedom and wanted independence. However, the British government attempted to raise tax revenues by imposing more taxes on the colonists to pay for the leftover debts from the Indian-French War. Some of the laws passed include the Stamp Act of 1765, the Townshend Tariffs of 1767, and the Tea Act of 1773. Some events that escalated the tension include the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, etc. The colonists were justified in rebelling against Britain.
The American Revolution was revolutionary due to the effort that was put in to make the colonies independent from Great Britain. Great Britain had no right to demand taxes from the colonies, considering they barely paid any attention to them. For a while, the colonists were used to being on their own, having no one interfere with their decisions, but Great Britain barged in like they owned the place (even though they technically did). The colonists were being taxed unfairly, with no representation in Parliament. They demanded the same rights as other British subjects and they were going to receive it one way or another. After the American Revolution was won by the Americans, the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of RIghts
The American Revolution was a justified war. It was the colonists against a tyranny. When the British came to America, they established themselves in Virginia. There are many reasons the American Revolution was created. The British forced laws on the colonists without their consent.
Soon the Quartering Act was passed, directing the colonies to provide quarters for British soldiers. Americans found this oppressive because it meant that soldiers were placed in colonial homes. In 1764 Parliament passed the Stamp Act, putting a duty on most printed materials. This was a normal tax for the British as it had been going on in Britain for a long time, and it made sense that the rest of their empire would pay the same tax. This placed a burden on merchants and the colonial elite who did most legal transactions and read the newspapers. Also passed in the same year was the Declaratory Act, which stated that the colonies were subject to the will of Parliament. This made a lot of sense to the British, as Parliament was their ruling body, but, to the colonies who had become used to their own government during the years of salutory neglect, this was a direct threat to their way of life.
The American Revolution was justified because the colonists were not being treaty fairy and equally by the British. And according to Jefferson, “people being oppressed have a moral obligation to rebel against their oppressors”. From the beginning, the colonists were not given the full rights as British men, just because they were not living in that country. The Navigation Acts passed by the Parliament to restrict colonial trade, and all of colonial trade with Europe had to go through England, overall they wanted to keep colonies in a position of economic dependency on Britain. And that was a serious damage in the colonial economies and people’s aspirations, it makes many colonists unhappy and smuggle goods to other country. And British
