Following the German surrender in November 1918, the Empire experienced a brief, but significant civil revolution. The German Revolution lasted from the end of the war until August 1919. During that time, a national assembly was held in the city of Weimar where a new constitution was drafted. A new federal republic (known as the Weimar Republic) was born and a semi-presidential representative democracy overthrew the monarchy of Kaiser Wilhelm II. The new government faced immediately faced a multitude of issues including political instability, reestablishing and maintaining international post-war relations, and severe economic turmoil – most notably the period of hyperinflation which occurred in the early 1920s.

The Weimar Republic was formed in the midst of post-war burdens, unhappy citizens, and created to be a democracy in a country that had never before had one. Thus, it faced many challenges throughout its existence. Weimar faced political challenges from the left and right, stemming from the economic and military sanctions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles, along with the underlying lack of democratic tradition. Though the solutions proposed by the multiple Chancellors succeeded in solving many of the issues, they were not able to overcome them all.

In November of 1923, Hitler tried to take advantage of the crisis facing the Weimar government by establishing a revolution in Munich, Germany. It seemed like the perfect opportunity, but poor planning and misjudgement resulted in failure and the low security imprisonment of Adolf Hitler. Before Hitler came into power, the Weimar Republic was the democratic government of Germany during the great depression. This time period was significant because it allowed Hitler to convince people he would be able to fix the economy and recover from the depression by favoring working class people, gaining himself a large following. He may not have ever been successful had the depression not hit Germany, as it was his biggest talking point. Eventually, he was elected as chancellor of Germany, he and the Nazi party were able to convince people to support him, and the president of Germany hoped electing him would make more people happy. At a point in his career, he convinced the government to sign the enabling act, allowing him to make laws without restriction. Several factors accounted for the collapse of the Weimar Republic when Hitler captured power on January 30, 1933.

Since the Weimar Republic was established in the aftermath of World War One, it was almost inevitable that it would be blamed for Germanys surrender and the Treaty of Versailles. The supposed surrender was even harder to accept since in 1918 Germany had signed an armistice with Russia. Weimar was in essence ‘brought about by defeat’ . The ‘November Criminals’ who signed the armistice were always associated with Weimar, thus making it difficult for Weimar to be associated with anything but defeat and humiliation. How significant were the weaknesses of the Weimar Republic in effecting Hitler's rise to power? At the end of World War One, Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated and fled to Holland. The new Government which replaced him initially met in Weimar as there were security risks in Berlin. So, it became known as the Weimar Republic.

The collapse of the Weimar Republic can not be seen as solely indebted to the severe economic problems faced during the period of its rule, but consequently it was the economic issues that became a footstep to the ultimate demise of the Republic. Subsequent to Germany’s defeat in the First World War and German Emperor Kaiser’s abdication from power, the Weimar Republic was proclaimed. The Republic that had emerged from the German Revolution of November 1918 would inevitably fall as a result of numerous issues. However, the extent of which economic problems had in the dissolution of the republic, and how these issues caused or came about due to separate concerns faced by the new democratic system became a major contributing factor.

I am glad that a ceasefire has been reached. An agreement has been made in favor of the Allies. Our President, Woodrow Wilson, had proposed a program entitled the Fourteen Points that was to be used for a peace negotiations. This program was intended to prevent future wars by getting rid of many of the causes of the Great War, such as imperialism and militarism. However, the Allied countries, particularly the United Kingdom and France, wanted a harsher punishment for Germany. The Treaty of Versailles was created, which stated that Austria-Hungary would be divided and Germany would have to take full blame for the war reparations. The size of the German army would be limited, and all of Germany’s colonies would be taken away. The only thing left of the Fourteen Points in this new agreement was the creation of the League of Nations, which was created to preserve peace. As a United States citizen, I feel that the creation of the League of Nations would limit us and harm us because of the way that other countries would want our support. The different views of foreign nations would push us into a corner and make it difficult to move forward.

I don't believe the Treaty of Versailles was unjust by any means. The treaty had many things written in it, like financial penalties, limits on the military, and loss of territory. But none of them were anything new, they had been carried through history. The new Germany rose to a stand to take Alsace and Lorraine from France then when the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 began to subside, they then started imposing very big financial indemnity on the defeated France. Later when Niall Ferguson brought to everyone's attention that the post WW1 Weimar Germany was absolutely able to afford the Reparations repayments, though it was not their intent. If they were to have the slightest of political will to pay what was due on time and in full amounts,
