Why is there so much suffering and evil in the world today? And if God is so powerful and in control, why does he not put an end to suffering and evil? These questions are asked by many, especially when their life has been ransacked by pain—the loss of a loved one or hurt by an act of evil. Ideally, it is a question of God’s sovereignty. How involved is God in the story of humanity? Overwhelming, the Scriptures and the Great Tradition speak to this issue clearly, yet also leave some room for diversity in the working out of God’s sovereignty. Therefore, people need a clear Scriptural definition of the sovereignty of God, an understanding of the relationship between God’s sovereignty and human free will and the purpose of God allowing suffering and evil to still exist. First of all, the evidence of God’s sovereignty or providence is clearly seen in the Bible. In the book of Daniel, Nebuchadnezzar proclaimed, “All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, ‘What have you done?’”1 Also, the Psalmist sang, “The earth is the Lord 's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.”2 In addition, God told Moses that he is the one who gives sight and speech to all people.3 And yet, the clearest portion of Scripture that speaks of the sovereignty…
