To Kill a Mockingbird is considered a problem novel because the definition of a problem novel is a story that focuses on a particular social issue. The problem and social issue that it focuses on is society's unfair judgement of others and racism . Both Boo Radley and Tom Robinson are treated unfairly by the people in the town. Boo Radley is judged to be violent and dangerous because he is shy and has stayed in his home his whole life. The judge him unfairy just because they don't know him. Tom Robinson is judged unfairy just because of the color of his skin. The novel reveals that even though someone is clearly innocent as in the case of Tom Robinson at that time in our history a black man could never get a fair trial if accused by a
Scout is the main character of the story who lives in a small town in Alabama called Maycomb. She lives with Jem, her brother, and Atticus, her father. It took place during The Great Depression, many people were affected and a lot lost their jobs but the Finch family weren’t affected that much because Atticus was a lawyer. Dill who came to Maycomb for the summer hangs with Jem and Scout and they make games up about Boo Radley and talk about him. In the book “To Kill A Mockingbird,” by Harper Lee, I believe that Tom Robinson is innocent. I believe that this man is not guilty because of all of the evidence and information that was provided. Also, the amount of respect that Tom Robinson had in the courtroom towards everyone and his overall character. You can tell that in the information provided that something is off in the stories and it was proved with so of the information that we gained from the characters. With Tom Robinson being so respectful and truthful in the court, it’s hard to imagine that he would ever commit a crime like that, compare to how Mayella and Bob Ewell were acting in the courtroom.
The nature of humans causes us to harm others, but some of us don't hurt others, instead they get wounded physically or mentally by others, those are mockingbirds. Three peoples are mockingbirds in the book To Kill a Mockingbird.
The black citizens are being racially profiled by other races. Treated differently and acted like they are not part of society. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, a lawyer named Atticus Finch in Maycomb Alabama has an option to help an innocent black man that is being accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell, but his family will be in danger or just drop the case but put the black man, Tom Robinson in jail. Atticus Finch’s children Scout and Jem are very intelligent from their father teaching them in their house and all of the experiences that they went through including the case. In 1930s slavery has ended but the Great Depression had begun and the black community was still being treated differently as any other person. People will be facing reality,
Exposed to the most bigotry out of everyone in the book, Tom Robinson was treated with extreme prejudice just because of the color of his skin. Robinson was tried for sexual assault by a racist jury. Before he had even started a trial the people trying him attempted to lynch him as part of a mob. (Lee 147) The jurors were clearly prejudiced against Tom Robinson, not having good reason to attack Tom Robinson. They had very little standing to attack Tom unprovoked and were clearly
She herself has commited a crime that “every child has done”: “[trying] to put the evidence of her offense away from her.” However, Tom Robinson was declared guilty in the end despite all reasonable evidence pointing the contrary. By portraying such a contemporarily horrid outcome, Harper Lee highlights the pure lunacy of a racially-motivated jury and the heinous crimes that could occur to an innocent African American male simply because of his skin
The most common prejudice people encounter is that of race. During Tom Robinson’s trial this type of prejudice is shown. Tom was a black man accused of raping a white woman, a crime that is punishable by the death penalty. Even though all of the evidence should prove him innocent, the jury still found him guilty, beyond a reasonable doubt. The justice system didn’t allow this man to have a fair trial because of racial prejudice. The character Jem was heartbroken by consequence of racism “His face was streaked with angry tears, ‘it ain’t right’ he muttered.” (212). The jurors had disregarded Tom’s credibility or that of the other witnesses. All they could focus on was his race because they could not see though the frost in that window.
After all of the evidence is shown and the testimonies are given, it seems evident that Tom Robinson is an innocent man. But because of the color of his skin, the jury says that he is guilty. The jury for that trial was all white because black people were still highly discriminated against, and held almost no power. By having Tom Robinson get incarcerated, Lee shows that even the court system has a racial bias towards black people. The sure system is supposed to be where all people get fair trials, but this instance sheds light on
Tom Robinson was convicted because of the color of his skin. "What was the evidence of her offense? Tom Robinson, a human being. She must put Tom Robinson away from her. Tom Robinson was her daily reminder of what she did.
One of the most important events in the book was Tom Robinson’s trial, which was unfairly judged due to the fact that the jury could not see beyond the color of Tom’s skin. The put their own racist opinions ahead of what is right and just. One of the most important events in the novel circulated around racism. However, the most focused on point of Tom’s life was not the only point in his life where racism has been shown towards him. The Ewell’s are a major source of racism towards Tom.
Maycomb, Alabama is a small town in the 1930’s. Everything is peaceful until people in the town began struggling for power. which is determined by race, gender, and class. Mayella Ewell is a young girl who is struggling for power. She thinks that if she has power then she can get away from her father abusing her. Instead Mayella tells everyone that Tom took advantage of her. Mayella knows that Tom Robinson could not win in court, due to the fact that he is a black male. In the 1930’s people would say a black man could not be trusted around a
When Tom Robinson was convicted of a crime and sent to a trial that he had no chance at winning, he had lost any bit of innocence that he would ever get. In a time where the black community faced constant prejudice and discrimination, it was near impossible for any African American to be let off as innocent for any crime. And the sad part to it is that a lot of the blacks sent to trials and jail weren't even guilty of any crime at all, they were innocent. Tom Robinson was sent to a trial for the rape and beatings of Mayella Ewell. No one believed Tom on his innocence and when Atticus, his lawyer at the case, hands down proved his innocence, he was still going to be convicted as guilty. If it had come down to where they had to sit in front of another jury and do the same thing over and prove his innocence again, he still would probably be convicted as a guilty man. In the end Tom would be sentenced as guilty on not fact, or logic but by wrong prejudice ideas. With the broken judicial system and sideways beliefs of the time Tom Robinson lost any little hope he could ever wish for, he was completely stripped of his innocence.
In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson is in trial for the supposed rape of Bob Ewell’s daughter, Mayella Ewell. Tom Robinson was on his way home when Mayella Ewell asked him to help her with something. Being a kind man, he went into her yard and started to look for some of the plants he usually dug up for her when she asked him for help. He didn’t find any, so he asked her what it was she needed. She told him a box she needed was up in a place she couldn’t reach. He went in the house and grabbed the box, and after he did Mayella told him the door was broken. Tom Robinson proceeded to look at the door, not finding anything wrong with it. He told her and she jumped on him, hugging him and saying she never kissed a black
Throughout the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson is symbolized as a mockingbird by his helpfulness to others, his innocence, and the way he was shot. It is quoted in the novel, “It is a sin to kill a mockingbird”(. This means it is wrong to harm a mockingbird because mockingbirds do nothing but sing music to our ears. A mockingbird also displays innocence to people. Although it is wrong to harm a mockingbird, they are hurt and even killed in the novel.
Atticus Finch the Lawyer in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird once said, "Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird." Within the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson represents a mockingbird because he struggles to be seen as if he is innocent because of his skin color.
