Why Is Utilitarianism Morally Wrong

Utilitarianism is one of the most influential moral theories which holds that the morality of an action is determined by whether it contributes to the greatest happiness of the greatest number of people or not. John Stuart Mill, a famous philosopher of the 1800s, is widely known as one of the founders of utilitarianism. He states that the foundation of utilitarianism is that “actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness, wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness”(Mill 10). Also, he raised the concept that pleasures that are generated by higher faculties values more than the one brought by baser faculties. A doctor has five dying patients, each of them needs a healthy organ in order to survive. A person who has no parents or acquaintances but has healthy organs visits the doctor at the same time. If the doctor can save five sick patients by killing this person and transplanting his organs without getting any suspect, should he perform the operation? Mill, who believed in hedonistic act utilitarianism, would answer yes without any hesitation since it is the right deed that maximizes most people’s happiness. Nevertheless, we know this decision is morally wrong from our common sense for he deprives the person’s right to life by killing him and therefore results in injustice. Since act utilitarianism intends to make most people better off by maximizing the amount of utility, it is inevitable for them to sacrifice someone’s happiness and end up violating morality and personal integrity. I assume that Mill would response to this objection by switching to the theory of rule utilitarianism, which considers both the moral rules underlie an action and how to maximize utility. Although he might holds the position that if we apply rule utilitarianism, the doctor will not kill the patient to save the other five, there are still some flaws existing. How can anyone know if his action is right or wrong? How can we know what set of rules to apply that can result in greatest happiness of this
