The founder of Walmart, Sam Walton, was born in 1918 in Kingfisher Oklahoma. In his early twenties, Sam Walton decided to join the military. Shortly after returning from the military, Sam and his wife moved to Newport, Arkansas. Sam and his wife left Newport to gain a better small town living experience and this is where Sam had opened up his first “dime store”. Sam had a great experience with this store as well as great success. Because of such success in his first “dime store”, he decided to open up the very first Walmart in Rogers, Arkansas in the year of 1962. Sam had given credit to the success of Walmart not only to the low prices that they offered, but also to the associates that he had hired to work for his business. He offered his employees something that was completely unheard of, he asked them to be apart of the success of his company. He didn’t treat his employees like employees, he treated them like family and wanted them to succeed along with the business. As Walmart became more and more successful with each coming year, Sam got more ambitious and opened up alternative stores such Sam’s Club and Walmart Supercenter and even decided to branch out into Mexico. The company’s official purpose is, “If we work together, we’ll lower the cost of living for everyone.. we’ll give the world an opportunity to see what its like to save and have a better life.” Now Walmart is number one of the Fortune 500 companies and still promoting low prices and making employees a part of their success (Our History). The type of customer that Walmart targets is your average individual who is on a budget and/or trying to save their money. Why go to Publix and spend eighteen dollars on toilet paper when you go to Walmart and get it for twelve or thirteen dollars for the same brand and count of toilet paper? Walmart …show more content…
