Just think about it: the thought of getting paid to give advice to people... sounds great, right? We have all been at times where people come to us for advice, so why not get put into a position where you are paid to do so? Regardless of pay or not, most of the time when we are in this situation, we are left not knowing what would be the best possible thing to say. If you are the kind of friend that has an interest to combat that problem, going towards a degree in psychology is the route for you. Being a certified master of the psychology field can welcome you to an array of many career choices, but one in particular that interests me, is psychotherapy. This has been a career I have been interested in for about six years now. One thing that …show more content…
On careerprofiles.info, it reads that the minimal salary I can expect as a psychotherapist is $51,100, and the maximum I can expect is $76,000. This pay-range is ideal to me, because it is just enough that I need to support myself along with my ideal lifestyle. In order to determine where my salary will be located in this range, a list of factors pop-up, which all play a role in determining how and when I can expect a certain amount of income. These factors include things like: experience, location, industry, and education level. These factors are not too important to me, because it is only expected that a larger salary will come with more experience. On top of that, it also does not really influence me to change my location to a place where I can expect a greater pay-roll. Along with this great salary, there also comes great benefits. One benefit that can be found when working as a psychotherapist is, “You're able to set your own hours, come and go when you want and have ample vacation time” (careerprofiles.info). Just the thought of this is great, as this means that I can set my schedule to be at times that will be convenient for both me and my future patients. Together, with the salary and added benefits, another factor that should greatly be taken into account is my personal health. However, personal health is not …show more content…
For example, if I (figuratively speaking), wanted to eat a salad at two in the afternoon, I could check that I have the ability to do so each Tuesday, June through August. Along with the workday and work hours, there also comes the challenges. Warn discusses on the challenges of being a psychotherapist, by saying, “It is sometimes challenging to sit with a person who is experiencing extreme pain and distress. Although I know I can help them, I also know that getting better takes time and effort.” To change after a period of time is natural; patience is key to becoming a psychotherapist. With these challenges, however comes a great reward in the end. When asking about his favorite part as a psychotherapist, he was short in replying, “Witnessing patients make positive changes in their lives and seeing patients get better.” This, in my opinion, is ultimately the greatest thing to witness in another, and in turn, is the most rewarding feeling to the person on the other end. Now, in order to make your work-day turn out either good or bad, comes one crucial thing: your attitude. Of course, you should only go for a job if you have the traits or skills that are associated with the job. Some traits and skills associated with being a psychotherapist include, patience, curiosity, compassion, understanding the mind
The Psychology career I chose is Counseling Psychologist. A Counseling Psychologist are professionals “ who help individuals strengthen their mental health and get through common life problems with their home, job or social lives” (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015, pg.1). Usually Counseling Psychologists find work at schools, businesses, hospitals or mental health clinics. They have to have an experience of a 1-2 year internship to qualify for a license but first they have to earn a Psy.D. The license these counselors obtain varies depending where they live and is needed to “ deliver mental health services and use the title ‘psychologist’” (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015, pg.1).Counseling Psychologists have to have good communication skills and analytical skills. Annually, Counseling Psychologist earn about
“Equal play. Equal pay.” –U.S. Women’s National Team (Reiher). The gender pay gap is surprisingly still a large problem today. Not only in soccer, but in every sport women exert the most effort, yet they do not receive the credit. The U.S. Woman’s National Team should receive an equal amount of pay as the men’s team because they have won more titles, they are better soccer players, and they bring in more income.
Counseling is a tool that is widely used by many people. Merriam Webster’s Learner’s Dictionary defines counseling as advice and support that is given to people to help them deal with problems, and make important decisions. This paper examines the career of a Licensed Professional Counselor, the education requirements, certification and licensure levels or requirements, salary, and the future of this profession.
“Join the union, girls, and together say Equal Pay for Equal Work” -Susan B. Anthony. Countless women, even here in the U.S. have some sort of the wage gap. The wage gap is the difference between the median earnings of women relative to median earnings of men. In this case, women earn a significant amount less than men. Although the wage gap has gotten smaller over the years, the wage gap still has a long way to go. Women deserve better than just minimum earnings. Full time, working women should obtain the best promotions and benefits. Women that work just as tough and have the equivalent qualifications as men do still earn less, and that is just unacceptable. The wage gap should be abolished on behalf of women of color and their struggle, equal pay is a global problem, equal pay benefits employers and workers, and the wage gap accumulates over time.
Through my research I have found multiple jobs that interest me, but there are two that stick out the most: Psychosocial Rehabilitation Specialist and Psychiatric Technician. Before researching, I had no idea about these jobs, but now I know good deal about them. After researching, I found out in what settings people in these positions work, how much they make on average annually, what their job entitles, what the education requirements are, what the growth rates for these occupations are. The jobs’ settings are very similar, but their salaries and duties are very different. I was able to find that if one just looks at the average, annual wage for each occupation, Psychiatric Technicians make about $28,000 while Psychosocial Rehabilitation Specialists make about $34,000. The growth rate for Rehabilitation Counselors, in general, is faster than Psychiatric Technicians, but only by four percent. The overall tasks of each occupation, however, differ greatly from each other.
Imagine what an extra 20%, or more, in your paycheck could do for you. Maybe it would be the difference between just scraping by and having a little discretionary income. Now, imagine being paid based on your own merit, and not some sliding scale which has historically favored men as the breadwinners of the family. Unfortunately, for most women, equal pay is still a dream. Today, as throughout history, there exists a gender pay gap where women are paid $0.79 to every dollar a man makes. Minority women make even less. Women, of course, have always known this gap exists, but they have had little power to change it.
One of my skills I used as a mental health technician is having the ability to listen on multiple levels , this allows me as a technician not only to hear what is said, but how it’s said, why it’s being said, and what it means in the context of that client. I also have a sense of humor, but counselors, I should know how to form a relational connection with someone to the point of developing a shared sense of humor in a therapeutic environment that the client can feel comfortable. Another strength is having patience with my clients as they process our discussion. Using patience can help build a good rapport with clients, and realize it may take them time to accept certain things and to move towards positive changes. Working in the field of behavioral health for 20 years, I work with clients that you need to discuss something many times before they were prepared to make a move in any particular direction. I also understand you are not likely going to see large changes in an individual client; therefore be okay with incremental progress in their lives and rejoice over small
In 2012 the NCAA March Madness tournament generated $1,005 million dollars in revenue topping the NFL, NBA, MLB and NFL revenues (Koba). From the money generated through these tournaments players were given no pay even though they put their hardest in training and playing these tournaments. Something must be given to compensate these players commitment and hard work. In addition, coaches get paid six figures and bonuses from tournaments and games won but players don’t get a single penny. Some may disagree because, many claims that athletes are already paid with a different form of currency which is medical expenses, Professional sports training, and financial aid for education. However, college athletes should be payed because many are not
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is responsible for regulating and enforcing policies that must be met by students in order to maintain eligibility. The athletic directors of prosperous universities (across the country) need to devise a petition, and present it to the NCAA in hopes of an agreement. By doing so, they will take the beginning steps in creating fair methods of compensation among the student athlete body of the basketball programs. These authoritative figures will be creating an opportunity where they can help improve the current collegiate athletic system without adding pressure to the students –some of which is already created by the present NCAA policies.
Should minimum wage be raised? Minimum wage should be raised because we want a town filled with
The White House in 2010 created the Equal Pay Task Force to implement the original Equal Pay Act of 1963. This task force has been conducting education efforts, building infrastructure, and enforcing the Equal Pay act in both the private and public sector. In all of its efforts this task force has been very involved and successful in all of its strategies to cease income inequality. However, is it enough? I think based on its results this government task force is doing a proficient job in ending pay discrimination.
When you see fully capable men or women asking for handouts or taking advantage of others accomplishments, it triggers frustration and anger but you can still go about with your daily life. When you see your favorite restaurants or establishments closed because they cannot up keep their workers’ wages that the state induced, now it becomes infuriating. Society tend to better their lives through trade skills, years of education, personal development, perseverance, and hard work in order to reach success. The moment we adopt new laws in order to meet the demands that minimum wage is not sufficient, is when we start seeing the economic collapse that will take tenfold the time to repair than it did to create. Adopting these new laws will influence
The minimum wage has constituted a hotbed issue in America ever since its beginning in 1938 via the Fair Labor Standards Act (Acs et al, 2914). Notably, in the past few years, fast food workers, service industry employees and American workers feeling the pinch of inflation have clamored for an increase in the minimum wage. The concept of a $15 minimum wage is a symbol for creating less disparity for minimum wage workers. However, while the concept is pure of heart and idealistic, it would be dangerous for the U.S. economy. This can already be seen in places like Seattle, Washington, Emeryville, California. Consumers would suffer as businesses would be forced to raise prices in order to make up the difference from the added human resources expenditures
Over 70 percent of full time employees work 40 hours or more a week (Wesley, Daniel). These individuals have what many would consider to be a job. So why is it when an athlete spends 40 or more hours a week dedicated to a sport it is considered anything less (Alessi, Dominic)? College athletes cannot be paid or accept any free merchandise of any sort because of rules currently set by the NCAA. The reason for this ruling is to keep the integrity of the “amateur” athletics. It’s an amazing fact that these “amateur” athletes find a way to bring in billions of dollars annually by just being mediocre at their trade. By this logic people should be lining up to buy season tickets to see their math teacher run a 7.2 forty yard dash or pull
Despite the fact that the Equal Pay Act has been law since 1963, many problems inevitably arise in the administration of equal pay laws (Fisher). It has been estimated that at this current slow rate of progression in closing the gender pay gap it will be 2068 by the time men and women’s wages are equalized. It is clear that the business case, as well as the legislative case, has a significant role to play (Commission Policy Report).
