The government of the people and for the people is only as good as the people voting and people running for those votes. As a nation, elections throughout its history have had controversy tied to them. The SunShine state is an important state for the national elections and for generating issues for the people as a whole. Being a swing state means Florida issues have power nationally, but it also means that the local elections may generate interest from the national government. Winning candidates from the 2016 election show this most notably. Current President Trump won Florida by being both an active campaigner and by tapping into the underlying swing state voter mentality. With Flordia not having one state wide party, it means the state is anyone’s game. Focusing on in person appearance while targeting not just his own party but other parties voters and the independent vote made all the difference. While not a politician, Trump …show more content…
Again with no one party holding dominance over the other it means votes from independent voters and that of the other party are especially important. A Presidential candidate can lose Florida and still win, a Florida Senator obviously cannot, so focusing on making oneself likeable on all issues is what is important. Understanding what the Florida voter wants and defining oneself is where the power of someone seeking office in Florida comes from. The message must be likeable and the person must be believable. Rubio was able to bounce back after dropping out of the Presidential race and win the Senate race becuase his core ideas about President were the same that he would bring to staying a Florida Senator. While Murphy attempted to gain support by joining closely with the Clinton party Rubio stayed more grounded in the middle. This coupled with his exposures during the Presidential race allowed him to take over the polls when joining back in the bid for
A crucial role in the State of Florida is the role of citizen participation. Citizen participation and community engagement play an extremely important part in a democratic
That being said, the state of Florida, being a southern state, may be expected to be a traditionalistic state. However, based on recent gubernatorial and national elections, it can be deduced that the state of Florida is in fact one of the most narrowly divided states sub-culturally and
In 2015, Florida underwent a redistricting process after the Florida Supreme Court ruled that the district map drawn by the Republican legislature was unconstitutional(MCI Maps). This new district drawing resulted in a shift in party politics within many districts towards either party, or in some cases newly balanced districts with seats open for either party. Along with these shifts, there also became a lack of established constituencies that Fenno argues are crucial for Members of Congress. While a winner of newly drawn district will have automatically have geographic and personal constituencies, they will have to work to gain reelection and primary constituencies. The way to do so is through having a strong homestyle that fits the needs of your district, along with direct impacts on Congress in order to be able to credit claim during time of reelections. Looking at the voting history the 9th district where representative Soto was elected, its clear that the encompassing areas are only slightly left leaning. Data shows that for the past three presidential elections the district has continually voted in favor of the Democratic presidential candidate with a margin of only 11.8%(Daily Kos Elections). Also, the district has only slightly leaned to the left compared to the nation resulting in its average PVI for the past three elections to be 3.7 in favor of Democrats: meaning that there is a presence of conservatism in the district. This split in ideology, demands that Rep. Soto has to appease not only his liberal constituents, but those who are conservative as well: seeing that he does not have a large margin for reelection. To tap into this base, Rep. Soto has to focus on bipartisan issues that bring both sides together in agreement. The easiest way to do so in the 9th district is to focus on agriculture. The 9th
Florida is a popular state when discussing political controversy. The media rushes to Florida during congressional and presidential elections due to its reputation as a conflicted state. Here we find the southern regions to be rather liberal and voting democratically, and on the other hand, we see the northern regions voting mostly conservatively. This creates controversy in the United States because Florida is a major determining factor of what kind of outcome we are going to get for a presidential election. This can be especially stressful for those running for office either presidentially or for the state specifically because they are unaware of their chances of gaining the states support and being elected into office.
Trump’s win was mainly because he appealed more with white working class voters in the Pennsylvania and the Midwest. Trumps speeches where very relatable to these voters. No matter what he spoke on. Whether it was on hoe America trades and spends money outside the U.S versus spending our money with our people, Hillary’s venal actions within her
When the words “swing state” are mentioned, Florida is perhaps one of the first states a person may think of. In this year’s election cycle, the story is no different. Florida has a single senate seat up for election, and Marco Rubio (R), and Patrick Murphy (D) are hoping to claim it on November 8th. Marco Rubio has held that seat since the last senate election in 2010, giving him an edge as the incumbent. Patrick Murphy is the challenger and has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2012. A glance at any polling numbers shows Rubio ahead, and most have shown him ahead since the beginning of the race. The polls do not show a commanding lead, as one may expect from an incumbent. While polling margins are slimmer than many average incumbents, money has not stopped flowing to Rubio. His finances are typical of an incumbent particularly that of a closely contested race. It may be impossible to tell which has the greater effect of Rubio’s fundraising. In states that are typically swing states and have close political races, simple analyses such as incumbency advantage may not fully explain the results and polls in the race.
The United States has a federalist government meaning that it works similarly on two different levels; nationally, and on the state level. This means that not only are elections held on the national level, but every year state-wide elections exist where different issues are voted upon in state-wide referendum. Although these occur every year, mainly they have been seen as only being important, and therefore watched by the people within that state, rather than nationally. Even so, within the past few years, these state elections have become more important nationally. Whether that is through the issues being voted on, or the trends that winning seats may prove for further upcoming elections, these state-wide elections are becoming more important for individuals nationally.

George Bush carried the Southern states and also secured wins in Ohio, Indiana, most of the rural Midwestern farming states, most of the Rocky Mountain states, and Alaska. Al Gore balanced Bush by winning most of the Northeastern United States, most of the Upper Midwest, and all of the Pacific Coast states of Washington, Oregon, and California, and even carried Hawaii. Wisconsin and Iowa, were extremely close; however it was the state of Florida that would decide the winner of the election. As the final national results were tallied the following morning, George Bush had clearly won a total of 246 electoral votes, while Gore had won 255 votes. 270 votes were needed to win. Mathematically, Florida's 25 electoral votes became the key to an election
Each party wants to have the most people representing the citizens. This causes the parties to argue on the districts congressional lines, especially those in Florida, as Warren discusses the ways that gerrymandering has been going on with the Florida legislature. Who gets to decide what is fair is the most important question within this article, but it all comes down to the parties. One party will always overrun the other, which is the way the system tends to work. The problem is which party decides what is fair.
Donald Trump announced his intention run for president in June 2015. It was supposed to be transient ambition, and he was meant to fade away with time. The declaration was met by nationwide jeers and he was nailed as a practical joker. He was simply supposed to just make up the number in the primaries and disappear into obscurity afterwards; very much to the collective relief of Americans. Fast forward to this day however, against popular belief, Trump appears to be gallivanting to a certain victory with much fanfare and adulation. He is commanding the most support and he has the poll numbers to show for his domination. For someone that was meant to slowly slip off the race, Donald Trump is still standing tall and leading a thinned pack.
In this article, from the British Broadcasting Corporation, the author explains what Donald Trump did during his campaign in order to win the presidency. First of all, Donald Trump focused on obtaining votes from states that could be swayed toward the Democratic or Republican side. As a result, Trump received these votes in addition to the typical Republican votes, allowing him to win the election. Donald Trump also spoke his mind no matter what others thought of him. According to the article, this was refreshing for many individuals who were tired of every politician being politically correct and never speaking their mind. In addition, the fact that Donald Trump was an outsider to politics was refreshing, according to the article. Lastly,
Bouncing back from a difficult two weeks Trump 's campaign endured with a campaign shakeup after losing to Cruz in both Wyoming and Colorado in terms of picking up delegates by means of a state convention, a victory in the Empire State was badly needed for the hometown front-runner. But Trump delivered a massive victory with majority of the GOP electorate casting their vote for him, something the state 's GOP party hasn 't seen thus far. Trump won in almost every single county of the state by 50% or more of the vote, only losing New York County (Manhattan) to Kasich.
Overall, the population trends in the state of Florida exhibits a pronounced and exploding elderly population. Demographic trends are otherwise roughly consistent with nation-wide patterns. Those trends include the nation’s exponentially growing Hispanic population. Specific relevant demographics trends include a shift from distinctly Cuban Baby Boomer populations , which identified closely to Republican ideologies; to a younger Cuban generation that is more aligned with Democratic ideologies. More notable patterns involve radical demographic shifts due to an increasingly diminishing Millennial population.
