Do you think school should start later? I think school should start later because students need sleep to perform good in school. I as a student know how hard it is to wake up at six o’clock a.m. for five days straight. It makes me feel sleepy for the whole school day which also means I do not perform as well or pay as much attention in class. Sleep is very important and everyone needs it in order to start the day. CDC reports that an eight thirty a.m. start time would let teenagers to get the recommended eight point five to nine point five hours of sleep a night. This is important because students probably go to sleep around ten o’clock, which means they only get eight hours of sleep. Teens are at a very important stage of their growth and development. Because of this they need more sleep than adults. This means that kids need more sleep if they want to grow and develop. This is significant because not making school start later has many consequences. But if you do make school start later it can prevent numerous thinggs. As children enter puberty, their nocturnal melatonin production shifts several hours later than what happened when they were younger, or when they become adults. I don’t think I can name one person who likes getting up early and going to school. In my opinion, I think school should definitely start later. Research has proven that starting school later has improved children’s grades, health, and attitude.

Students in their teens need 9 hours of sleep, and only 9% of students in this age range meet this requirement. Students who have later school start times report being less stressed and more focused. When schools start later, more sleep is allowed and students are less sleep deprived and can focus on the task at hand.

I know I don’t like getting up at 7 in the morning to go to school and force my brain to work even though i'm dreading to go back to sleep. It is tough for students to get the appropriate amount of sleep that they need because most teens do not get tired until eleven at night and school starts at seven thirty. One of the leading reasons why schools should start later is restlessness. According to one of the articles, “teens are often still seen as the root cause of their own chronic sleepiness” (Lewis). It is said that the circadian rhythm shifts during adolescence, resulting in the ability to stay awake later. This decreases the number of hours of sleep a teenager receives daily, so tiredness during school occurs. Also, technology has consumed the lives of many young adults and may contribute to less sleep (Lewis). Personally, my parents used to take my phone before I went to bed because they wanted me to be able to function the following morning.
