Why Seatbelts Should Be Worn

With increased interstate speed limits, distracted drivers, and more vehicles on the roadway buckling up could be the most important seconds utilized each day. Far too many people are seriously injured or killed in vehicle crashes by choosing to not wear a seat belt. Wearing a seat belt has proven to reduce serious and fatal injuries in motor vehicle crashes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the leading cause of death in the U.S. among people between the ages of 1 – 54 is motor vehicle crashes (2017). History has proven a need for seat belt usage in the U.S. All but one U.S. state currently has a mandatory seat belt law in effect, however many drivers and passengers still choose to not wear one. This decision can have a tremendous effect on loved ones if killed or seriously injured in a crash. There is one sure way to increase the chances of seeing loved ones again. Wearing a seat belt reduces injuries and saves lives.

Imagine this, class gets out and it’s the end of summer session. You’re all excited, ready to finally relax after a long 8 weeks. A friend invites you to a party 15 minutes away from your house. You and your friend get in the car, but did not buckle your seatbelts and drove off. Your friend turns to you and says, “ Buckle your seatbelt.” You response, “ We’re only driving for a couple of blocks. Nothing is going to happen to us.” When suddenly a car driving on the opposite side of the street crushes into your car. The next thing you know you are in the hospital with server fractures. Meanwhile, your friend only has a few scratches. You were one of the few fortunate ones to survive a car accident without wearing a seatbelt. The seatbelt remains one of the most overlooked devices that can preserve lives. Wearing seat belts is essential to increase the survival rate in car accidents, however not everyone agrees with the importance of wearing a set belt. The reason seat belts had not been required is because, up until today automobiles have not been capable of reaching speeds fast enough to cause serious harm to the driver and passengers. Countless lives have been saved as a result of drivers and passengers wearing seat belts while in an accident. However, there will always be a percentage of people that choose not to wear their seat belts, and they will pay the consequences of serious injury or even death. The law already requires everyone in an automobile to wear their seat belt.

We should put seat belts on buses because the students stand up while the bus is moving and that is dangerous.Also i think it’s safer if we had seat belts on buses.

The law states that if you are caught not wearing a seat belt you could get fined up to five hundred dollars. The law should require people to wear seat belts. The law should require people to wear seat belts because it prevents people from getting killed or injured, it would make people want to wear seat belts while driving, and it would encourage passengers or other people to wear seat belts.

Since the implementation of mandatory seat belt laws studies have shown that seat belt usage has increased while traffic fatalities have decreased. Seat belt usage rates increased from 17% to 79% in the U.S. between 1983 and 2003 (Houston & Richardson, 2006). All U.S. states except New Hampshire have mandatory seat belt laws for adults. Currently, there are two types of seat belt enforcement, primary and secondary. To date, 34 states have a primary enforcement law which allows a police officer to initiate a traffic stop on a vehicle and issue a citation for no other reason than the fact that the driver is not wearing a seat belt. A benefit to a state having a primary enforcement law is that in 2016 seat belt usage was up 92% according to the CDC (2017).

When you see so many incidents lately on the news regarding the students riding the bus, the lack of supervision, and sometimes the harmful acts being done to other students; you wonder why these things are happening. Or perhaps there was an accident involving a bus where a student was severely hurt. I am for seatbelts being on school buses for the simple fact that anything could happen on a bus even an accident and the students should be safe. The issue of seatbelts on a bus is not a huge controversial issue compared to other issues such as whether or not English should be the official language or abortion, but it is an important issue to be discussed and made a decision on.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “in 2015, seat belt use in passenger vehicles saved an estimated 13,941 lives” (1). The NHTSA goes on to say that almost 30 million Americans still don’t use seat belts on a daily basis. Since vehicle accidents are among the leading causes of death in the United States and even the world, the argument to improve seat belt technology has increased dramatically. Researchers are often more concerned with whether or not people are wearing their seat belts, not the effectiveness of them, until now, although both are incredibly important. Seat belt safety, which is directly related to seat belt technology, has been shown to be increasingly ineffective because of the high severity

An enormous division currently exists between the people who believe that automobile safety should be an option and those that feel it must be a requirement. The federal government feels the morally obligated to create the safest driving environment possible. On the other end of the spectrum, opinions exist that the average driver has ability to make the choice of safety on their own. Editorials, political assemblies, debates, and conversations have arrived on the concept of click it or ticket. This idea refers to ticketing any motor vehicle driver and passenger that is not fastened by a seat belt. Arguments have been made for both sides, and have been reviewed in multiple states.

School buses, for as long as anyone can remember, have had no seat belts and children, for the most part, have been fine and ultimately safe. People may think this is unsafe and it sort of is but if something were to happen and these children could not get out of their seats fast enough a lot of circumstances could go wrong. Children enjoy their first bus ride and they do not want to be bombarded with all of this controversy over whether or not it is safe; they just want to get to school and back home. That is all a school bus is really, a short ride to and from school. Seat belts should not be required for school buses because children most likely would not wear them anyway and that could cause more danger, children should have a say as to whether they wear a seatbelt or not, and seat belts can cause a restricting situation where students could not exit the bus quickly and safely.

There are many people who do not understand the importance of seat belts for safety. They do not wear their seat belts even though they know the mortality statistics. Most of them think that seat belts do not help when an accident occurs. We have all made the excuse that the seat belt is uncomfortable. Driving is a dangerous duty that should always be practiced with more caution and care. Some people think that not wearing a seatbelt is rebellious. Other people think that they will never get into accident. Some of the consequences of not wearing a seat belt is that you could die, you can get injured and many more. So far, the only way to avoid these consequences from happening is to wear a seatbelt.

Automobiles have been around for over a century. They help people get around town as technology improves over the years. Now with better fuel economy, we are excited to be driving around for many miles over the road. Although many of our cars have change overtime, the one thing that has never change is the seat belt that’s near our car doors. Whenever you get in any car on the road, its important that we depend on people to wear seat belts. Seat Belts are the ones we must wear before we head out on our cars. Its protect drivers from injuries sustain from crashes. Seat Belt inspire many states laws in America, but sometimes not all seat belt laws are mandatory. Only one state in the United States didn’t have any seat belts laws at all with the exception of the booster seat law. Anytime we get in our car, we always depend on seat belts to protect drivers from serious injuries or
