Why Should Schools Have Uniforms?

School uniforms would reduce the amount of bullying that occurs because they would be mandatory for every student; they would limit so called “tough guys” from making fun of students who are weaker or who do not have the brand name clothes, and are less fortunate than other students.

Having uniforms will not stop the bullying at schools. Schools think if students wear uniforms it will result in less bullying with one another. Schools will always have one kid that will do bad things either ways if he or she still wears uniform their can still be a gang that will bully them. We are living in the 21st century which technology and fashion are designed for the young people, especially students. They want to use and wear something new, modern and style. Most of the students need to wear whatever they want to school to show other people. The school should have a policy for students to wear a uniform. School is an education center; it is not a fashion show place. All students should wear uniform at school. When students wear uniform the school develops a disciplined climate, the students feel equal in spite of the fact that some people say that student should not wear uniforms because lose important freedoms.

In summary, schools should not have uniforms. They do not allow students to express themselves. Also, they teach conformity over individuality. School uniforms would lift the burden of the cost, for both parents and families. Students naturally compete with each other, clothing is one area that could be eliminated. The wearing of fashionable clothing, while others feel the need to wear extremely casual clothing. For parents the burden of cost normally becomes theirs as children have the need to wear certain types or brands of clothing. Thus, competing with each other over what clothing to wear each day would end. How many parents have trouble with children picking out their clothes for school each morning? With the introduction of a mandatory policy on uniforms for all students in our schools, it was noted that not only the school crime rate, the number of violence, the rate of tardiness, and the suspension rate dropped, but also the students’ intellectual performance improved, and the economic status problem solved. Given these points, school uniforms are beneficial and therefore should be a requirement for all students.

“Students who can’t afford expensive or designer clothing are often an easy target to bullying” (Anderson 1). Dave Anderson is a credited author who wrote an article for ListLand and in it describes the top reasons school uniforms should be mandatory. One of his top reasons was the problems kids face due to their attire. Being rich or being poor should not take away from the great young kids and make school an unsafe place for them. Not only do school uniforms help with the bullying seen within school, they also help people feel connected and accepted. Much like a sports team, wearing the same outfit as those surrounding you, will help you feel like they are the same as you. Dave Anderson further elaborates on his previous reasons for wearing school uniforms and claims that, “Uniforms play a vital role in reducing peer pressure and raise the level of acceptability. Students in uniform feel united and connected”(Anderson 1). The amount of peer pressure someone may not have to endure, can make that person want to come back to school and be surrounding by the people they connect with. Due to the increase of students feeling accepted and less teasing, having school uniforms will make the entire atmosphere of schools change and promote positivity and an enjoyable place to be and feel welcome.

School uniforms should definitely be used in school systems. Uniforms are both good for schools as well as for the students. Wearing uniforms will help build a sense of unity within the school. Instead of everyone as a separate team, everyone will be in the same team. Wearing uniforms will help free students of the stress of what to wear in the morning. I personally disagree about getting uniforms for our schools because I don't think everybody would feel comfortable wearing clothing they don't want to wear. We wear things we want for a reason, not to look good for others, not to impress anybody, but to be ourselves. Just by changing our schools dress code is not going to change our school's environment or students. Most of us would rather come to school dressing in their normal clothes everyday rather than go to school in clothing every other student is wearing.
