Before reading this please understand two things, first of all I will support our military and have the upmost respect for everyone that has served our country, second, I'm not against women serving in the military. I do not doubt that some women can handle the physical and emotional hardships of front line combat, but I do think there is a problem that goes beyond equality when we allow women to enter into combat on the front lines, especially in our special forces. Regardless of what we want to think about male and females in the military being equal and having the same standards, ALL of the branches still have different standards for males and females. Do you know why? It is because most women wouldn’t even qualify to be in the military …show more content…
Not only are men and women built differently but they are also wired differently. Women's bodies are unable to stay level and strong at all times because of the constantly changing hormone levels due to menstruation. How are we supposed to have a woman on the front lines of war in the days before her cycle when she loses half of her strength, and not even to mention the emotional ups and downs that affect judgment. Women you know what I am talking about, and men if you’ve ever been around a woman during that time of the month, you know it's something you want to steer clear of. Or what about the women who get deployed into a combat position and never get their period because in the weeks before saying goodbye they wanted that extra time with their man and got pregnant, well now their unit is down a person, the time it took to train that person went down the drain, and tax dollars are wasted. The U.S. Army currently applies lower physical standards for females, such as modified push-ups and slower 2 mile run minimums. Will those standards now increase to equal those of the male
The big worry stems from an idea about the degeneration of the combat community structure. So, with that in mind, let 's suppose that women are granted full entry and that the requirements for men and women are exactly the same. Let’s also suppose nobody tampers with the vetting process, meaning no overseeing, “Yes Men generals,” pushing women through, as well as no misogynistic gate-keeper putting an extra sandbag in a girls’ rucksack prior to some training
Men have always been looked upon as the leading sex. Looking back through history women have been the ones who take care of the home and children, while men are the ones who work and go to war. However in recent years there’s no doubt that women have become much more equal in the work force. Nevertheless men are still the ones who are forced to fight our wars when the time calls for it. Many think that women should be entirely equal to men having their choice to be drafted taken away but the fact is that they are physically at a disadvantage, too emotionally oriented, and the increase of female presence would have a more negative impact in the military in the way of social interactions.
Frankly, I find it surprising and almost offensive that the armed forces would lower the minimum standards in an effort to allow more women into combat roles. It is dangerous to those women, and for all those who would serve with them. If the pressure to lower standards in order to allow more women into combat is coming from D.C. politicians, that needs to be addressed as
In recent years, the United States military has been expanding and adjusting its policies to remove as much discrimination as possible. Although women have been allowed to enlist in the military since World War II, many positions and MOS’s in each branch do not permit women to perform them. Such positions are primarily combative, and require a large amount of physical and mental strength and endurance. While many feel that this is sexist and discriminates against women, it is simply a matter of whether it would be beneficial to have women placed into combat for national safety as well as the safety for the other soldiers. Since the majority of females cannot meet the requirements necessary to fill these combative positions, there is no need to revise the military regulations on the matter and in turn risk the lives of other soldiers and the protection of citizens. Despite its positive impact on removing discrimination and misogyny in the armed forces, it would negatively impact military operations and efficiency.
Women have been enlisted in the armed forces since June 12, 1948, when President Truman signed the Woman’s Armed Services Integration Act. Throughout this time, women have served several different roles; however, women were not allowed to serve in combat forces. Arguments offer the idea that women are physically and emotionally capable of performing the same as men, Researchers have proven that only a small percentage of women are capable of performing the physically demanding aspects as that of men, although there are a select few women that are capable of completing the qualification standards to join the combat forces. With that being said women should be allowed to fight on the front lines.
For years women have been trying to gain gender equality throughout the working world, along with in the military. Since the beginning of a uniformed military, women could not serve in military occupational specialty (MOS) positions that put them in direct combat roles. Although many women have contributed in significant ways, they have not been authorized to serve in MOS such as infantry, artillery, or armor. As the war on terrorism has developed since 9/11, women have slowly worked their way farther into the military and its many roles. This resulted in women being placed into direct combat roles. Though women have been allowed into many different roles, there is still one battle that they have yet to win and this time the majority is not backing them. Women are trying to gain access to United States Special Operations units in every branch of the military and the majority of these operators are not happy about it. While some people believe women deserve equality and the chance to do what men can do in the military, that is why women should not be
Women are no different than men. I mean sure men are way bigger and stronger but I’ve seen women that are also very strong. Women were put in war just to be nurses. Women couldn’t even be a doctor because people said it was a man’s job. Critics say women possess physical and biological handicaps that will damage the cohesion of combat units. If they were put in combat. Women are still being treated unfairly. Women should be treated equally. Quote “Since the U.S. military has begun integrating women into combat positions; it hasn't lowered its training standards or made any concessions (“EDITORIAL: Women Have . Right to Fight for Freedom”). The changes made even to let women fight in the military services happened in the late 1990-1991. The critics said it may take two women to do the same job as one man on the battlefield. Quote “A woman may lack the strength to carry a wounded soldier out of harm's way.” ("Introduction to Women in the Military :”). Women are not all the
could not do the required amount, so the Marine Corps had to make a change. Conzachi states: The United States Marine Corps quietly announced recently on social media that the current requirement for female Marines to do a minimum of three (3) pull-ups as part of their training by January 1, 2014 has been delayed for another year. Currently, females are not required to do even a single pull-up, but rather a test called a “flexed-arm hang” in which they can score points based on the amount of time that they can hang from a pull-up bar absent any gear. A maximum score can be obtained if they hang for 70 seconds with their chin over the bar.
In the article “Women in Combat: Education, Leadership Keys To Success” Jacqueline Hames talks about the different concerns there are for women joining the military. Hames discusses how different groups are actively trying to decrease the health concerns that arise for women that join the military. No matter what branch of the military women choose to join there will be health concerns that arise, so women should not be banned from some roles in the military just because of health concerns, and allowed in others. According to Hames, direct combat roles for women raise certain physical and psychological health concerns, but that the Department of Defense and the Army are actively researching on how to find a way to still integrate women into these positions. Also, Hames says that the Women’s Health Task Force is focused on the gender-specific health needs of women who serve in the military, helping to make sure that the military meets all the health needs of women and men equally. Women should not be banned from certain roles in the military just because of some health concerns that may arise, they should have the right to choose if they would like to serve in the military or not, just as men
Some people question about putting women in combat and it’s whether they have the necessary strength and stamina. They also have said the inclusion of women in different combat units may harm unit cohesion, similar to the argument regarding gays. They say that Americans won’t tolerate large numbers of women coming home in body bags, but apparently it wouldn’t matter if a man came home in a body bag according to this. Some people think just because some people in the military are women that it means they can’t do the same things that men in the military which is not true. Women have
Over the past hundred years women have become a more prevalent part of society. Women's rights movements have revolutionized the way the world views women. However, despite all of the advancements there are still lesser women in the military force. I believe that more women should be admitted into the military because allowing more women in the military would give them more equal opportunities, it would add a fresher perspective as opposed to many male dominated systems, and most definitely boost military personnel
Ever since the Revolutionary War, women have been serving in the military serving different roles, mostly the job of being a nurse or medical personnel. Their main duties included cooking, nursing and fixing the men’s uniforms, but putting women on the front lines in combat is where the issue begins. Many researchers have argued that the American leaders are discriminating against women, while other researchers argue why we aren’t trying to protect our mothers and daughters. It should not be allowed for women to participate in ground combat due to the physical nature of the conflict, psychological and emotional differences between men and women, and lack of support from today’s society to see its female population
Women believe that they can serve because other countries and nations like the Israeli, the Kurds, and Palestinians allow women to be in their infantry, but they are only allowed because it is necessary for their survival and not about equality. Not allowing women in the infantry is not about subduing women’s right and blocking off gender equality but it is for the combat effectiveness. Capt. Serrano and other Marine officers have the same view to not allow women in the
In striving to be as physically fit as male colleagues, many women hurt themselves and thus limiting their military roles all together. “But it’s flatly rooted in the fact women biologically are not able to perform physically to the same level as men.” (Davis) “The standards of physical fitness have been best suit to men, and women attempting to reach them [men’s physical fitness] will over-stretch themselves.” (IDEA) These two sources both convey that women do not have the physical standards as men and in trying to reach the biologically impossible standards, women often out do themselves. Although women might not be as strong physically, they do offer strong mental capabilities and are more effective in some circumstances. One source claims: “If women can meet the standards as men. They should be allowed to serve in the infantry.” (Michaels, Brook and Welch) Meaning that if women can withstand the biological factors, then they should be capable of serving in the front-lines. Another source states: “There is no issue with a women’s intellectual quality or value as a human being.” (Davis) This author is claiming that there is no reason why women should not be able to serve in the military and that women, as a whole unit, should be valued as human beings that have the opportunity to serve in combat roles if they
Women have personal physical problems that need to be attended to. They have monthly periods that put them at a disadvantage. In combat they have to be prepared to do anything such as hide out for weeks, take night watch, and etc. If their period comes, they have to attend to themselves or they will get a bad infection. Also cramps usually come when they're on their period .That could cause problems when they have to run. If women go to war and are in a different place for a long period of time they want to have sex. If they do, they run the risk of getting pregnant which will make them unable to fight because they will be slow, and their unborn infant could die. Hormones tend to be very high in combat areas.
