Some people feel that their work isn’t valuable so they tend to free ride off others and act like their contributions won’t be sufficient to the cause. That is where the social striving comes in at when the group should work harder because they have someone lacking to do their part. A sucker is someone known to do all the work because others didn’t do their part and they get little to no credit for doing all the work. These are all the issues that are at hand when it comes to working in groups and is the main reasons why some people hate to do group work so the best thing to do when being in groups is unavoidable, is to make sure that all the group is participating and to make sure that a part is assigned to everyone. Another thing would be
In the article “Small Group Communication” Garth Pittman states that working in groups can actually be very helpful because it will get the job done faster, and develop skills that can be useful at work, school, and/or personal life. He clarifies that people will have different ideas and collaborate with one another to work well in the group. If they can get along well and manage to separate the work, then the project will get done on time without having any troubles. Pittman points out working in groups can get complicated. Few people in the group will not connect with the rest of the members. For those who aren’t used to being in groups can find themselves having a hard time getting use to it. The author believes that there is certain ways
Initially, I had a negative view on group working because of the challenges that I had. When I was in high school, my five other friends and I used to work together in a music competition. Although we were supposed to get together to practice
Working in a group to achieve a high quality group project can be one of people’s most difficult school experiences. Working in a group is tough because there is often someone who does not pull their own weight. “There are five stages to group development, adjourning, forming, storming, performing, and norming” (John & Wiley pg 166). Christine’s group from the Case Study the Forgotten Group Member is in between the Storming and Norming Stages. The Storming Stage “is dealing with tensions and defining group tasks,” while the Norming Stage is dealing with high emotionality and tension among the group members” (John & Wiley pg. 166). Christine and her group could have had better
Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success” (Ford, 2016). Have you ever wondered how do people behave or react when they are placed in a group? Groups are defined as two or more people working, iterating and depending with each other to accomplish tasks or succeed common goals (Schermerhorn, 2011). In today’s world, employees cannot tolerate spending as much time in the workplace nor less working together in groups. In a group, poor collaboration occurs because of conflict management, underprivileged recognition, and by not establishing norms; where members do not feel committed. Also, because they cannot acknowledge what are their roles, which is “a set of expectation associated with the job
Group work has been a cornerstone of the social work profession and requires a variety of facilitator skills and awareness of group processes. The SSLDTM Group Program for People with Difficulties in Social Situations (Socialwork1914, 2017) provides an excellent example of a psycho-educational group co-facilitated by two female social workers, Jane and Karen. After viewing the 6th session of this 8-week program, I began to understand how the concepts of group formation/development, interpersonal dynamics, and leadership styles contribute to successful group work outcomes.
Something that we learned as a group was that cooperation helps a lot. Certain tasks were accomplished faster and this showed us that one person does not have to do the entire project on their own. Procrastination is also detrimental, causing cramming on days before deadlines. This can be stressful and force meetings to be postponed. Our group has also learned to follow a set schedule. Following a schedule allows us to complete all of our work on time.
There comes a point in a person's life when they have to cooperate with others on a group project. The people you work with might not have the same point of view as you or the same work ethic. This a part of life that a person has to deal with sooner or later. Being a lone wolf is simply not enough in today's society.
The last discouraging group experience I had was for the final group project in my audio technology class in my senior year of high school. We had to write, produce, and record two songs for an artist that we created. At the end of senior year, most high school students are not motivated to do anything. The members of my group did not really care about completing the project or the quality of the work we were doing. There were not really any group norms. We were expected to work on our tasks for whatever positions were assigned during the class period. There was a lot more deviance than conformity in the group. The members would sometimes not work on the group project during class time but on their own projects and homework for other classes.
I have never been in a group project that everyone did an equal amount of work and did it right. I tend to always be the group leader, doing everyone’s work. I know if you want something done right you have to do it yourself. Another probably important and frustrating thing is that I don't have Microsoft Word, I have a new Apple Computer, so I have whats called “Pages” instead of “Word” documents. I am still working out how to use it properly and to its full extent. Another fault of mine is trying to make everyone happy to the extent that when i can't i feel pretty bad about
some people prefer to work in groups others prefers to work alone which one do you prefer ? describe your reason and give example.
The first reason is that it is easier to concentrate on your work. Which is true because a group can be loud and obnoxious. Having friends in the group will also distract you because most people would rather communicate than do work. The more you can concentrate on getting it done the faster you'll be finished with the work.
I am Zeeshan Ali; I am working as a Computer teacher for Classes VI-X-M in Canal Side Boys Campus. Effective Teaching includes many useful teaching strategies that a teacher chooses according to the requirement of his/her respective subject and topic as well. In result of my years of experience and as a Computer teacher I find Group Work as the most effective and fruitful technique at every level.
Working in a group can be very difficult at times. Different people with different views may not always agree which one another. Throughout the various task I played the communicator. I made sure everyone was on track on what we wanted to do. I also made sure people was okay and happy in the role they was playing in the group. My group worked together in collecting ideas from one another and making it into one.
It’s almost impossible to avoid group projects or team activities in today’s society. Most people have been a part of a team. Nearly everyone has had to complete a group project for a class. Now within these situations, many have experienced one person in the group that did not contribute to the project or team and there was another person who took over the entire project and wanted to do everything on the team. The many consequences of this is the disruption of team cohesion and holding the team back, inhibiting them from completing the task at hand. This can definitely transfer over to the workplace. This is the cause of an individualistic attitude. You can find them giving excuses for why they do not work in teams or be in a group for their work, they can say “I do not work well with others,” “I am too busy to meet with a team,” “I do not want to be stuck with a procrastinator,” and “I’ll wind up doing all the work anyway.” Although these are very undesirable circumstances the point of working in a team is to be effective and efficient. Managers are searching for quality and quantity as a result of and employees work and they believe working in a group or within a team will generate quality work at a faster pace. Now if an employee were demonstrating such behavior, the organization must handle it at once and not allow it to happen
According to Ringlemann people working in groups end up using less efforts rather than when working individually. Individuals who are more motivated towards their work engage in more social interactions and people who are less motivated are engaged in social loafing.
