In the article “The Case Against College”, Linda Lee expresses her feelings about college. The article discusses why Linda feels that her son and most other people are better off not going to college. Not everyone is meant to go to college, but college is beneficial for some. For some it may be a waste of money, when they could simply go to a trade school or immediately start a good job right out of high school. There are so many people who have to go to college like nurses, teachers, doctors, lawyers, and professors.

There are a few reasons why one might not want to go to college. Paying for college, wanting to get in the workforce, and not wanting to leave home are some reasons why someone would choose to not go to college. Some colleges can be expensive, so some do not want to pay for it. Other people want to start working as soon as they get out of high school and make money. Most people who go to college do not say at home and some are not ready to leave their house right after high school. These are some reasons people do not go to college, but the benefits make it worthwhile.

Not only do we get a lot out of getting a college degree in what we want to do, but so does our society. There are requirements for every job for a reason. Jobs need people that specialize in just that career field. They want us to be passionate about what we do and more importantly know exactly what we are doing. For example, hospitals have no room for mistakes because not only may it cost a life, it can also costs them money. We feel safer knowing people know how to do their jobs right. College education is necessary whenever there is a shortage in certain careers. It’s important to have higher education so there can be growth and competition in our society.

Furthermore, achieving higher education and attending college sometimes just cannot happen. Simply put, not everyone can and or should attend college. Think about it like this, if everyone had college degrees, people would feel entitled to good paying jobs.

Why are not more people going to college? One obvious answer would be cost, especially the cost of tuition. But the problem is not just that college is expensive. It is also that going to college is complicated. Free college is not just about cultural and social, neither economic. It means navigating advanced courses, standardized tests, and forms. It means figuring out implicit rules-rules that can change. College graduates have higher employment rates, bigger salaries, and more work benefits than high school graduates. College graduates also have better life, live longer, interpersonal skills, have healthier children, and proven their ability to achieve a major milestone.

Today, college is an option in some homes because many work places will not hire you if you do not have some type of college education. When applying to college it can be very stressful on one, especially when one start to think about how much money it is going to cost someone each year that they are trying to earn your degree. Most of your college students go to school not because they want to spend money, but because they must earn their education to make it somewhere with a career. One must consider their choice of major, cost of school, where they are attending school, and a variety of other factors. Depending on the situation college may not be a smart investment (Owen and Sawhill 209). I agree with this notion that some people are not meant for college, but we as a society still push the idea of college which creates conflicting thoughts in the mind of a student. When discussing the benefits of attending college the biggest supporting reason revolves around further expanding one’s knowledge in order to earn a higher income. They use ethos in their appeals but they fail to provide evidence of this. They may show numbers that are skewed showing the difference in salary of a high school graduate and a college graduate but they don’t show the majors that earning that high income. They don’t show the number of college graduates without a job and how much debt they are in. Why do students feel like they have to go to college? It is the norm to go to college right after high school because that is what everyone else does. The failure to complete college had been recognized as a personal problem. There are multiple responsibilities when it comes to going to college and some students are not quite ready to attend. Most students go to college for the wrong reasons, whether it is to get away from home or to have fun and party. With all the responsibilities that students have to uphold comes stress and even depression.
