In an article by Jonathan Tracy entitled, “Why Study World War II?” he characterizes the war as the defining tragedy and pivotal period of the 20th century. He points out that the war saw the introduction of radar and electronic warfare, sonar, hand-held antitank weapons, the jet engine, the cruise missile, and the smart bomb. The war also saw the first wide-spread use of antibiotics, blood plasma, synthetic insecticides, and two-way radios. In addition, World War II saw the creating of the V-2 rocket, the first vehicle capable of reading outer space, and when coupled with nuclear weapons, can have a decisive impact on the human race. Thesis: Many people have different opinions about World War 2, that it was the most destructive war in history, but still refer to it as "the last good war." Not that any war is good and not that there weren't terrible sacrifices made and decisions that could have maybe been made differently, but World War II, as time showed it, was a war that had to be fought and won. The devastation was really big, with a total military and civilian deaths being 70 to 85 million, about 3% of the global population during that time. “Never before had so much brain-power been focused on a single problem.”(Laurence qtd. in “Eyewitness”). Many inventions can be said to have changed the world, and the way it worked. Only a core few of these many inventions can be said to change air warfare, and few of those are as game-changing as the B-29 Superfortress by Boeing. The B-29 was the plane that dropped the atomic bombs in World War Two (“bomber”). The plane by Boeing was used most in World War Two as a strategic long-range bomber. This invention revolutionized the concept of war, and war is a factor in all life on planet earth. The B-29 bomber changed warfare by sparking the innovation of aircraft technology, saving lives, and allowing more power to be carried by the means

No such war was so strongly affected by math and science then WWII. The earliest technological advancements created during world war II was by the Nazi’s and there study of rockets and rocketry. They created the V-1 rocket which is a predecessor to the modern day cruise missile. This investigation focuses on the use and necessity of the atomic bomb in World War II. To what extent did the atomic bomb dropped by the United States during World War II save lives? This will be investigated using websites, books, military accounts, and newspaper articles. Military calculations of what potentially could have happened had the United States invaded Japan instead of dropping the bomb will be researched. Also, information from the Manhattan Project, reinterpretations of the event, and military strategies of several countries will be used. The physical effects of the bomb on the victims will also be considered. Alternate opinions of why the bomb was dropped will be discussed.

Few inventions have shaped war as much as the atomic bomb. The atomic bomb enabled massive indiscriminate destruction on a scale the world had never seen. The offensive capabilities of the atomic bomb were terrifying and many believed a nuclear war could destroy the world. Bernard Brodie, Albert Wohlstetter, Thomas Schelling, and André Beaufre describe the state of war the atomic bomb introduced in the Nuclear Age. Their writings show that atomic bombs changed warfare by changing the focus of arms development to avoid conflict and threats against civilians were now used to force surrender.
