Why The Army Should Be 18 Year Old

During the Vietnam War, the United States' government instituted a mandatory draft. Since it was mandatory, if a man's birthday was selected, he had to report to boot camp or face prosecution. This system was both fair and unfair; it was fair because it was not biased, and it was unfair because the men strongly disliked being forced to go to war. In times of war, the United States' government should not be allowed to institute a mandatory draft because it can cause severe mental issues and the young adults are not always prepared to take on the gruesome task of defending their country.

“Should the United State of America adopt the idea that every American citizen should serve at least 2 years in the military?”, in my opinion, this is a terrible idea. America is “The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave”. Going into the military should be a personal choice.What would this benefit anyways? The United States draft, also called conscription, was first used during the Civil War but later used in WWI, WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Napoleon was the first general to use the modern draft. In 1940 FDR signed the Training Service Act of 1940 starting the first formal draft in the United States, but in 1973 congress decided to have an all-volunteer military. According to a survey, 80 percent of Americans opposed the draft in 2007 (Text 5, graphic). If the majority of the country opposes something that would directly affect its youth, then that something should not be reinstituted. Public opinion on the reinstitution of the draft reflects the opposition that would be present if it were reinstituted. Draft-eligible Americans would most certainly try to find a way out of military service, as draftees have done in the past. But because the public opinion on the draft has shifted dramatically since 1980, where 59 percent of Americans were in favor of the draft, the resentment associated with serving would most likely be higher (Text 5, graphic). This resentment is almost inevitable, especially with pro-draft arguments claiming the need to serve in the military in exchange for citizenship rights (Text 1, line 61). The Military Drinking Age Should Be Lowered The citizens from the United States of America are known for the constant love they show for the men and women that fight everlasting battles and pernicious wars to keep the country a protected place to call home. The country trusts these individuals to keep the citizens safe and that is precisely what the military accomplishes. A person can enter the military for service at eighteen years of age. However, in most states a person must be twenty-one years old to purchase or drink alcohol legally, even with military identification.

Think also, the possibility of forcing young criminals between the ages of 18 and 25 to join the military. Maybe due to joining the military, these young criminals would be reformed into honorable, self-respecting individuals or become leaders of our great nation. In addition, if military conscription were implemented, the tax payers would not have to pay for the juvenile criminals to be locked up in maximum or minimum security centers.

The current drinking age should not be lowered to 18 despite the responsibilities that are given at that age. While at age 18 teenagers receive a handful of new choices and responsibilities. Of those some may argue that if at 18 teenagers can join the military and are ultimately risking their life that they also should be able have the choice of consuming alcohol. Along with everything else granted to an 18-year-old as they enter adulthood it is not enough to lower the legal drinking age. Let us start with the strongest comment of this argument, joining the military. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, describe the types of occupations and the number of enlisted personals in each occupation in a table. The table includes the total amount of personals enlisted in combat specialty for all branches of military at 151,501(Table 1).

The age of 18 has been the minimum age to join any United States military branch for decades now. Many people would like to see the minimum age to become 21, the same age you can drink, but it is, for many reasons, impractical. The age of legal consent in the United States is a major factor to discuss. Other issues will be the effects of joining at a young age. When a teenager turns 18 he or she becomes an adult and is allowed to make their own choices. The minimum age of 18 years to join any branch of the United States military should remain the same because at that age a person is considered to be a consenting adult.

Less than one percent of all Americans are enlisted in the military. An even smaller percentage of high school students are enlisted. Students are thought to be incompetent, and not mature enough to decide on enlisting in the military. However, students should be allowed to join the military. The military offers many benefits students can use to help their future. The protection of our country is not overlooked for recruits; they are awarded many personal benefits as well. Tuition assistance, job training, and many benefits that help prepare recruits for occupations while enlisted. Not only are students getting great benefits, but they are also in a small group of professional workers.

Most people have, at one point or another, considered what they were going to do with their lives. Whether a person would like to become an activist, an artisan or a business professional, the military has something for everyone. Finding a path in life is often filled with uncertainty and procrastination. The United States military is a path in itself, should one wish to retire from it; however, should a person wish to make their own path, there are benefits for that as well that can remove all doubt and curb procrastination. Due to these many benefits, I believe that it should be mandatory for all adults to enlist for a minimum of twenty-four months.

As many other countries mandate young adults partaking in the military for two years, the United States should follow suit. Many beneficial consequences would be rendered as a result of the increase in service. This would also be a great commencement into the real world for any young adult. These statements can be explored by discussing the benefits of free college tuition, disciplined young adults who are ready to follow orders, and the sheer power of numbers.
