“The Wall didn't simply fall, it was destroyed, just as the Soviet Union was destroyed.” Said Mikhail Gorbachev after the Berlin Wall came down. The Berlin Wall symbolized a lack of freedom under communism. Because of this, the Wall played a big role in the Cold War. The Cold War was a long standing tension between the United States and the USSR. The United States wanted to get rid of communism, but the USSR wanted the opposite. The Cold War started in 1949 and finally ended in 1991, only two years after the Wall came down. In this essay I will be talking about the three main reasons the Wall came down- which are the USSR’s economic situation, the East German protesters, and the Soviet Union communist leader.
