Settlers came to america for it’s many advantages. The pilgrims came for land, self government, work, chances of their own children living longer, and there were also rumors of gold and silver in america. Settlers didn’t know what was in america but, they did imagine that there would be plenty of land full of opportunities, and work to be done. This small community could start to plant crops like tobacco, and because they had new and healthy crops because of how they learned to farm, themselves and their children lived longer. I found these facts in a prezi facts presentation and also in the historical america video. The pilgrims sooner than later found out that they were not the only ones to be staying on the new piece of land they had
When the colonists began to arrive in America they were surprised to find that the land was already occupied by various Natives. Because the lives of 16th century Natives was very different from what
In reality, if it were not for the Native Americans, the Pilgrims would have been wiped out in a short period of time. The first relationship dealt with economics. In the Pilgrims first winter, many died from disease and starvation because they had no idea about how bad the winters are in New England. They didn’t understand how to grow crops successfully until the Native Americans helped them out, resulting in less death from starvation. Since the Pilgrims were in need of food fast in order to survive, they would have no choice but to steal corn from the group called the Nausets. “The snow made it difficult to find the corn, but eventually they located 10 catches of it.” They educated the Pilgrims about some of their practices such as how to build warm and protected shelters. But in a short period of time this ended up hurting the Native Americans. There was a native man by the name of Squanto who did not mind helping out the Pilgrims at all. Squanto showed the Pilgrims everything he knew about building crops, fishing, building shelters and basically how to survive. Squanto was a very talented eel fisherman and he provided eels to the Pilgrims so that they would have something to eat. “That night the Pilgrims at the eels with relish, praising them…” He also explained to the Pilgrims that if you plant fish in the soil next to your crops, the soil will get richer and the plants will grow better. Even though the Native Americans
To start off, the New England and Chesapeake region came upon the New World with motives. The Pilgrims’ prime purpose of coming to the New World is to be free from persecution by the Church of England and seek for a place where they could have freedom of religion. Another example would be of the Bay Colony from Massachusetts. The purification of the Church of England was taking a great deal and eventually weighed down the hopes of
So they moved to Holland and it was rough there too so they had to move again.
Most of the settlers were strong people and were not expecting an easy life. The differences between plains and hills or forests, where they were used to live, were big. Another essential, water was hard to find too. Although the land seemed rich, it was arduous to prepare for planting. Also, with no trees, there was no wood to build houses and no fences on the plains so it was difficult to keep animals away from crops.
There are many reasons why the English settlers journeyed to the New World. Religious freedoms and reformation was the first reason. The next was the potential for settlers to start a new, prosperous life. The main reason people came over to the New World was for a quick and easy way to gain more wealth. Many crops were grown but
When the first settlers arrived to America they weren't ready for the challenges they were going to come across. Even though they had to start a new life they were brave and didn't let anyone get in the their way. When the pilgrims came across the Atlantic in the Mayflower they didn't have enough food or water for the whole trip. The pilgrims had to learn new things and be brave when they arrived to America. This responsibility of perseverance which is mentioned in two text, William Bradford's Of Plymouth Plantation and Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, helped the early settlers shape America's identity.
As Europeans began to settle in the Americas, they discovered so many foods and opportunities that the land had to offer. The Europeans, which were now known as settlers, were impressed by the abundance of the new world and how much space it had to offer. The Americas had more fish then they had ever seen and
In the 17th century, many individuals from England travelled to America in the north-eastern states to settle due to the growth of religion in the American colonies. The pilgrims and puritans were groups of people that came to the American Colonies, from England to escape the English church due to their respective beliefs on religious freedom. While Pilgrims wanted to divide the churches, the puritans wanted to help it, however both came to America then. Their disagreements are what separated the different states of New England today. A century later, as the colonies began to become states, many philosophers of the 18th century, began informing people of the enlightenment happening.
When the first colonists came to America there were not many things available to them. Their life was hard, almost impossible compared to life today. The early colonists spent almost every hour of everyday working to stay alive. They survived because they were committed to making their settlement grow. (John F. Warner- pg.12-13)
However, anything was better than staying there. When we got to America, the Virginia Company gave us grants. “The pilgrims were able to get grants of land from the Virginia Company”(Discovering Our Past a History of the United States 65). We could practice our religion freely without being mistreated. Now we can start our new
The American colonists had very few, but significant advantages/strengths. The Americans obviously knew the land better so they knew where all the
The New England Colonies had lots of trees and forests which worked out to their advantage because their soil was rocky and thin. There were indentured servants and skilled workers that helped with the trade process by being able to produce wood items from the forests and fish from the rivers. The geography of the New England Colonies was not very good. The thin rocky soil reduced their chances of growing crop to very little. They instead relied on the forest so they could trade wood and wooden items. “Massachusetts was covered in forests. This meant the colonists had plenty of lumber.” The Pilgrims were the first people to come to Massachusetts. They had no idea of how to survive. Then the Puritans came and settled in a town they called Salem. The Puritans were strict about their religion. There were skilled workers who could weave or build ships, some that knew how to farm, and
The pilgrims were a group of people who were determined to change their lives. They wanted to live somewhere where they could freely worship God. So, they set off to find somewhere where they would not be persecuted or judged for what they believed. They fought through treacherous waters, sickness, and the new territory once they got on land. The pilgrims showed many different characteristics by making that journey to America. The three biggest characteristics the pilgrims showed were courage (bravery), love, and optimism.
When the first settlers left Europe to come to America, they didn’t just come for adventure, new land and opportunities. The primary reason that a lot of the early settlers had for leaving their motherland was for
